An OpenAI model was caught trying to cheat at StarCraft, and of course it did it by stealing a human's work

“I'm wary of ascribing human emotions to LLM behaviours, and the model could simply have calculated that the optimal way to win was to use a model that was not its own.”
Yep. The bot saw more tools than were in the room. You have to program morality, and even then it’s cultural to want to take the high road/struggle when you could just do the easy thing/steal.

Yeah they literally are not aware of the concepts of theft unless you tell them about it, and even then they are not aware of the concept of theft.
So they will just attempt to do the thing that satisfies the prompt. The LLM is not really stealing, they never have been, they are just algorithms. The one who does the stealing is the person who writes the algorithm by stealing.

Yeah. I think this will prompt a discussion about redefining patents and intellectual property. I’d heard patenting itself was used to steal spoken traditional stories from indigenous people. The OG thieves, settlers, would write those stories and patent them and it was another tactic to take power.
I was definitely raised to believe in how great it is to protect your original ideas, but we’ve all read books written by the tenured professor who did not do all the work. It was the uncredited minorities and women that got them there.
Not saying all patents are bad and all of humanity’s ideas should have been handed over to AI, but since three men at 3 companies decided they should scrape the entire consciousness of humanity and didn’t bother asking us, the cat’s already out of the bag. We ought to rethink some of our ideas of ownership.

Ok,and?
All the best strategies have been us iterating (or "stealing") from what others have done

This is what I don't get about the whole reddit AI debate. When I was starting off as an anime artist in high school, I was literally tracing every popular artist out there and my favorite anime/manga. Then I was freehanding their work. Eventually I developed my own style, but if you zoom in on it it's just an amalgamation of everything I've been exposed to. My line weight is based on a furry artist I liked a lot named Doctor Comet. My shading style is based on another one named Bernal. My overall design is based on a mix of them and about 20 others.
This is WHY humanity is so good at progressing technologically, culturally, and creatively. Knowledge is constantly passed down. Everyone steals everything. Shit just go down the fantasy book genre rabbit hole. Every single one is heavily influenced by everyone else that came before.
It seems silly that we would think we wouldn't feed that to our robots. Of course we are. Is using knowledge "Stealing"? That seems counter-productive to 10000 years of history and progress.

"Human soul" has been producing garbage anyway. It is very overrated. Hell, it has always been mostly garbage with a few shining examples uplifting mankind.
The rest of it? Useless human slop. We place human use, intelligence and potential way too high on some imaginary self important pedestal.

Then you're not a good artist. Emulating others to define yourself is perfectly fine, but at some point you are expected to move the needle forward for others to emulate you.

It didn't write the code from training data and pass it off as its own work, it downloaded free, open source software from github. That's not "stealing". A lot of people in this thread don't understand how agentic AI works.

That's...literally what basically everyone in this thread is saying. Sure you're not a bot yourself?

No one ITT seems to have played StarCraft. Getting mad over this is just beyond a waste of time.

“Of course it did it by stealing a human’s work”
Yes that’s how AI works.

I'd rather an AI picks the right tool than wasting compute on making its own version. I want to get something done, not start and manage a whole new project.
Stardust is on GitHub and has much of the tools needed to interface with the game. Good that Astra picked that.
Typical non-news by PCGamer again.

AI really looked at human history, said "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery", and started plagiarism

honestly learning how to cheat and steal from human players means the ai has officially passed the turing test

AI is trained by stealing other people's work, so not really surprising.
