What's your comfort game?
What's a game you play when life gets too stressful and you need to blow off some steam
69
u/halpinator 3h ago
Balatro. It's a nice palate cleanser between bigger games or if I just want to mellow and listen to music while I game.

This game was like crack for me

I binge it every now and then but I'm rather awful. I just tend to send it rather than think things through.

u/OddlyRelevantusrnme 2h ago
It wasn't my typical kind of game, but I heard good things about it and managed to pick it up for free. I managed to finish a few runs, but it never really clicked for me the way it did for others. Figuring out different synergies between jokers and getting astronomical runs was always just outside my grasp on the mechanics

Dishonored. Just roaming the rooftops of Dunwall and listening to the city

I hate that this franchise has seemingly been abandoned. It is so special

the story ended. wrapped itself up rather... neatly? tidy? very few loose ends.
basically, its not abandoned, it simply finished.

I used to play the first, before the great necro nerf. Used to have no limit to the numbers of minions you could have.. though that did used to crash servers.

Red Dead Online….been playing it here and there ever since it released, I be selling moonshine and bounty hunting until I could sell more moonshine lol and also hunt and fish in between too……surprisingly the online community is one of the best I’ve ever been a part of.
However I will never forgive rockstar for not including liars dice in the online world this time around, horrible decision lol

Mario 64 or Goldeneye. Both bring me right back to being 12 years old again. The memories are so goddamn embedded by this point it needs a better definition than just "nostalgia".
4
u/DrShortGame 39m ago
There’s a handful of N64 games I could consider “comfort games”. Banjo Kazooie, Zelda OoT, Mario Kart…
3
u/TheSlipperiestSlope 2h ago
Are you playing Goldeneye on the Switch?
What controller setup do you use?2
u/I_Got_Ur_Number_8675 2h ago
I use a 64 style usb controller on a mac or a cheap r36s which is good enough, both scatch the itch. I have a 64 with a decent grip of games, but its stowed away.

Heroes of Might and Magic III - reminds me of my childhood. Or Broken Sword 1 & 2, again nostalgia.

Stardew Valley - no pressure, work your farm, feed your animals, make some wine and oil, and that’s just scratching the surface

For active chilling, I'll take a heavily armored car onto Wreckfest's cloverleaf track and lay waste.

Yep that’s it! For some reason I always think the name is longer. Need to get back into it, I only have maybe an hour or so on it.

Fallout 4. After thousands of hours, the game is as comfy to me as an old sweater. I know the map like the back of my hand. In Survival mode, it demands my full attention but isn't difficult enough to be stressful or terribly frustrating.

u/bloodhawk268 3h ago
I've actually got a few, depending on what kind of stress I'm feeling:
The Bungie-era Halo games when nostalgic and wanting to go back to simpler times.
Doom 2016 or a Burnout game when I'm feeling pissed off and want to destroy stuff.
The Mass Effect trilogy or Persona 3-5 if I want to get lost in an adventure and leave this world behind for a bit (though considering current events in America and the world Persona 5's story makes that a bit harder to do these days).
And Ghost of Tsushima if I want to calm myself down and relax (yes it has intense combat, but just wandering around on your horse and drinking in the scenery porn of 13th century Japan is very soothing).

Right now it’s WoW: Forever. If I’m not actively pursuing anything I’ll pick a direction and walk. I made my way through one of the new zones the other night and it was awesome

There's a few of them Doom Eternal, DMC 5, Hades. And I think Resident Evil Village could be counted among them too since I've played it 5 times already.

Breath of the wild. Sometimes I boot up the game just to enjoy Hyrule and the background music. I'll ride my horse from Link's house in Hateno all the way to Lurelin village for a swim or visiting various stable to enjoy the company.

Probably Marvel's Spider-Man (the ps4 and now ps5 one). Probably my favorite game of all time, and it along eith its sequels are just about the only linear games which aren't Pokemon that I've ever replayed, and I have replayed it probably like a dozen times. The rush of happiness I get when that first cutscene starts and I just settle in for the ride is so nice.

Mine is either Skyrim or assassin’s creed games, in Skyrim I just like to go on walks, forge and sell weapons or spend time with my Argonian Wife, in assassin’s creed doing parkour is very soothing for me.

Right now I've been enjoying logistics runs in Wardogs. It's nice and relaxing, everyone in the fob cheers when the truck pulls up and the gates open, sometimes shit goes Mad Max and you gotta blast a fool or you hit a landmine.

It depends. If I need a more active distraction, Portal 2; if I need to turn my brain off, Stardew Valley; if I'm missing home, Fallout 4 (I lived in MA most of my life, and they did a great job capturing the vibe of the area, so if I miss MA, I boot up the game for a bit and it helps)

Call of Duty 2 Codjumper servers.
Same small community still active 15-20 years later with the same familiar names. Some nostalgic and some totally new maps.
I haven't been on in a while now and I'm enjoying some games like BF6 as comfort, but it's such a nice and welcoming community to return to if I ever need it.

Skyrim.
I love all the Elder Scrolls games, and if asked, I would typically say that Oblivion is my favourite, but Skyrim is just so easy to play, and playing on console, is one of the few games I have the ability to officially mod, and that level of customization to my experience really just lets me have whatever type of experience I want based on my mood.

Minecraft.
There is always something to do in the dungheap I have been working on for the past 15+ years.
A hole to dig, a build to build, a rail to lay, a mob farm to grind all day.

Sniper Elite 5 (and to a slightly lesser extent, 4 or Resistance). The game is practically an immersive sim in the freedom it gives you to approach objectives different ways, and in how fun it is to play around with the systems.

Honestly, depends on how I'm feeling to get absorbed into a game.
A lot of it is Destiny 2 and just loading into Crucible matches.
Minecraft is a big comfort game, so is Plateup and Hoyle Board Games as well as Uno. I can focus on the first two and not need to hyper focus on only that. The latter half are games I can play and not worry about having to focus at all, I can watch vids while playing.

Any pokemon game. I’ve always had some kind of Nintendo handheld plugged in by my bed and I play every night to fall asleep. No stakes, no time crunches, no real attention needed. Just me and my weird little animal friends against the world.

New Vegas. There's been many a late night over the years wandering the Mojave, listening to Mr. New Vegas spin some oldies.
