be interesting to have a game with an NPC Hero that is basicly your competition. To the point where if you fall behind they become the primary antagonist *protaganist and you end up turning into a support character.

edit: whoops thanks for the correction

not even close. I dont mean in them beating you in planned fights easily, i mean they litteraly start being the ones to clear the quests and progressing the story without you. Like if in Red/Blue you take your time grinding only to find that our rival ended up taking out team rocket and capturing the legendries.

Gary Oak became the Champion while you were hurling rocks in the Safari zone

Speed runners don't count. They have inhuman reflexes

Ok but that is actually genius. You are railroaded to speedrun the main quest, not stopping to 'do the sideqeusts'. In doing so, you and your party are known as Great Heroes and fight the Final Battle.

Only it's a hollow victory as villages were destroyed by plagues (gather x healing herbs), dragon attacks (help save my sister from being sacrificed to a dragon), swarm of mutant rats (kill x sewer rats), etc. Now, you either have a motivation to new game plus and do all the sidequests, for the 'good ending' or you time travel to avoid the dark future with a new 'main mission' to do the sidequests, leaving the glory for someone else to claim.

A darker take could be that the party realises their mistake or gets blamed for their failure, especially when every noble and authority figure pushed you to hurry up. Regardless of the specifics, the rest of the game is following up and trying to help the people and places you failed before.

Not the exact same as what you’re saying, but that’s kind of what the pokemon games do a lot of the time.

This sounds like a sick game not gonna lie, I can see Dan Howser and his new studio taking on a concept like this lol

No, you had it right the first time. The protagonist is the POV character. That doesn’t change just because they turn out not to be the most important person in the story.

…well, sort of right. The POV character would remain the protagonist, but that wouldn’t make the rival the antagonist in the scenario you describe - funnily enough, they’d be actually an antagonist until the point where the protagonist accepts them as the superior hero and becomes their support.

You were cooking. They become the hero or villain based on what you don’t do. Your lack of good choices or your desire to be evil could make them a bigger evil or a hero despite you with a little rng involved. Your good choices or neutral choices could be worse than callous pragmatic ones or vise versa. Having key significant decisions throughout the game along with minor ones that fill a benevolent/malicious meter.

Or have a game where the choice between playing the villain or hero isn't a choice, where you start as the hero and have a series of events that set you up as the big bad, and you can't do anything to prevent it, as the systems start pushing you to get stronger as the big bad and take on people trying to stop you

I'm always the medic in MP games so totally wouldn't mind being forced to be player 2.

I don't think they've ever had an asymetric coop game where one guy is the hero and the other the supporter. Like a frodo/samwise kinda thing

Sorry if rambling but now I'm thinking of a rogue like where you sell supporting services to heroes. Like a companion for hire kinda thing. You have to decide if you're ok with the path they're going down and if you can survive the encounters on the adventure. The further you push the more and better loot but also greater the danger

Hmmm. FFXIV kind of makes it like that though people have max levels all roles available in that game.
