Customized an Apache 4800 for my Switch 2

Post image

Switch 2 Dock Hyperion 3 Joycons 120-game card case Cable bag (HDMI, USB-C, walls adapter) Four Switch 2 Pro Controllers

Plucked the foam, glued the upper and lower foam sheets together for rigidity, and Plasti-Dip'd the combined foam inserts for longterm strength. Great case for family vacations (especially flights).

Just a heads up, a lot of people in the Ghostbuster community use these cases for their gear. The foam is not ESD safe and some people have had their electronics short out because of the static.

Thank you for the heads up, polyurethane foam shouldn't become an ESD risk unless it gets moist or wet, which could happen if the case is sealed up for a long period of time. I'd recommend throwing a dessicant packet in there for long hauls. Also the Plasti-Dip not only makes the foam stronger and less likely to come apart, it's also an electrical insulator

Things being more conductive, including moisture, is usually associated with lower ESD risks. Conductive agents are sometimes added to PU foam to make it more ESD safe. Charges being able to migrate and spread helps to prevent buildup in one spot or material. Non conductive materials have the potential (ha) of generating and holding on to large charges.

I'm not saying your foam is an issue, but understanding ESD helps correctly assessing that.

That being said, fully assembled boards, and especially when these are themselves assembled into final products, tend to be much more ESD resilient than components or subassemblies. Finalized products as you buy them have often been ESD tested by the manufacturer as well. There are even cool standards which specify things like the radius of the fake finger zapping things.

While you're probably right, I personally wouldn't be comfortable with even the most remotest possibility of a short-out, and would tear out all the foam and custom-cut a replacement insert that's ESD safe.

But I'm just OCD like that.

The case is a super cool idea, though!

You should read up and understand ESD risks then instead of knee jerk reacting to some very niche issues. Cosplay gear likely has exposed wiring and is almost certainly DIY. Plastic housing and commercial products are not susceptible to ESD in the same way. Your backpack, luggage, and nightstand aren’t ESD safe but you likely never think twice about tossing your electronics there.

My response was reliant on assuming that the person who said it was a risk was actually correct.

If that's not true, then obviously my response would change.

Yeesh.

They also make the same pick a part foam in ESD pink. It’s expensive but it works great.

If you're going through all this trouble to make a foam case why not just add an isolating layer between them like an end safe fabric?

Just don’t cross the streams and you should be fine

just dont cross the streams

Did not think of this! Can you get a special kind of foam that is static safe?

1

u/oneeventhorizon 5h ago

Yes, it will be labeled as ESD safe and is typically pink in color. I opted to wrap my gear in ESD bags instead. A little cheaper in my opinion.

I want the clean look like what OP has going here! I think it would be cool to do with my gaming laptop I just bought. Make a space for the laptop, charger, controller, headphones!

Bro is walking through airport security looking like he’s carrying launch codes for a tactical strike, only to open it up and play Mario Kart

-1

u/SelectionEmpty967 12h ago

Lol yeah but imagine opening that up and its just Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

My stick drift came out of nowhere! /s

1

u/HattedSandwich 10h ago

All joking aside there isnt mesningful pressure on the sticks, the grips do

Honestly, having this level of protection for casual gaming on the go is both hilariously overkill and deeply satisfying. Great custom foam layout!

How often do you use all 4 of those pro controllers?

43

u/HattedSandwich 13h ago

Every weekend, so long as my sons did well in school that week we have a dad/mom/kiddo Kirby or Mario game night

12

u/twinsfan94 13h ago

Thats awesome

Ive been a PC guy for ~15 years so it's been really fun seeing how many great 2/4 player games Nintendo cooked over the years

u/BK99BK 11h ago

Get Orbitals its a blast!

u/HattedSandwich 10h ago

Ill check it out, thanks! So far Kirby and Mario are the gotos. I wish there was a 4 player Yoshi game, I loved Yoshi's Story as a nugget and it would be fun to play Crafted World/Mysterious Book all together

1

u/Tmtrademarked 12h ago

Right! Like holy cow does Nintendo still own the couch market imo

u/buddhamunche 11h ago

I seriously love nintendo and my switch for this reason!!

What if they did bad?

Jumper cables.

that's not a travel case anymore, that’s a portable nintendo command center 😄

I’ve been wanting to buy something like this for a while, it seems heavier duty and cheaper than a case designated for a Switch 2

0

u/HattedSandwich 13h ago

If you can wait for a coupon these Apache cases regularly go half off, which is insane for what you get

1

u/thebigmatze 13h ago

Nice, my Switch 1 pro controller’s left stick rubber chipped a bit during travels. This seems worthwhile if you have the space

1

u/HattedSandwich 13h ago

If you have 1 or 2 pro controllers you could definitely fit this in a smaller 3800, maybe even a 2800 if you get creative

1

u/bobvella 13h ago

the game card case sounds like an awfully high value to bring around.

needs a slot for a virtual boy accessory

0

u/Old_Adhesiveness9543 11h ago

Honestly, half the fun of getting a new console is spending way too much time playing foam-tetris to make it fit just right. It looks super slick, though!

1

u/Serafita 10h ago

I feel like if you had the two right hand side controllers facing to the right instead, it could leave room in the middle for a cutout of something else in there haha. Maybe extra joy cons for games which are joy con only? I dunno

All you're missing now is a portable monitor but you could put that in a laptop bag or something I guess. :D

u/Willdorado 10h ago

I'd be constantly anxious about someone stealing this from me. Any anti-theft or tracking capabilities?

1

u/thehatteryone 8h ago

Slapping an AirTag under the foam would be trivial and simple. Putting it in a less obvious slot in the foam so it can't be readily found and discarded by someone looking for it wouldn't be much harder. Of course if the thief had no interest in a cool case, they'd have dumped all the hardware into a rucksack and thrown the case away the moment they opened it.

u/dasilvatrevor 9h ago

That's a crazy looking Apache helicopter

1

u/CapeMike 8h ago

I salute your dedication, fellow gamer!!

o7

....also, friend code?

1

u/dubsdread 7h ago

No room for your ocarina

1

u/pallasukacrow 5h ago

the plasti-dip on the foam is the part i'd never have thought of. my pelican knockoff sheds little black crumbs into every port on my gear and i've just accepted it as a personality trait at this point

1

u/AdaliGreen 5h ago

Clean very clean! This inspires me to do something with my laptop setup!

u/Pro_XS2 12h ago edited 12h ago

Damn, mr. moneybags spending 280€ on controllers

1

u/thehatteryone 8h ago

It's a shame the default controllers for a home system console like this are just unergonomic trash. Maybe Nintendo could do the opposite of the Lite - bundle the console, maybe even a dock-free, one-part, plug into the wall unit, with a couple of less "pro" controllers that they'd also make available as budget first party accessories.

1

u/ComplexR22 10h ago

It’s not that serious

0

u/neueziel1 12h ago

oooh look at you, showing off having friends to play games with ;(, anyway nice clean setup

u/Poppyspy 10h ago

There's enough space here for 4x S2... That would be more impressive.
