RuneScape 4 announced - "A new RuneScape age is coming"

https://play.runescape.com/4

"An entirely new RuneScape MMORPG, built in Unreal Engine and set in the world of Gielinor. Right now, it’s rocking a working title: RS4. That isn't necessarily the name we’ll eventually settle on, but this is our fourth generation RuneScape project, so RS4 works pretty well for now."

The comments are just people not knowing that RS has 2 and 3, including me

RuneScape 1 was RuneScape “classic” and that version’s officials support shut down support a year or two ago. Current “RuneScape” is RS3, which is what has been continuously developed from RS1-2-3; it’s the current version of the game that has gone through all updates. OldSchool RuneScape is a separate branch, launched from a saved state of RS2 before evolution of combat update given the overwhelming dislike for the MtX and combat changes from the RS3 update. It has its own development cycle and is fully branched off from RS3. The games reference each other and have some shared lore but are totally different, standalone games.

Jagex made some HUGE changes to the development of RS3 this year to try to rehabilitate its image and remove MtX. In large part due to the overwhelming success of OSRS. Now, it looks like the huge success of Dragonwilds is spawning a new game. Though they’re so early in the process of announcing RS4, it’s probably still 5 years away minimum.

For most people that remember RuneScape, you’re probably remembering the original RS2. For people that have followed RuneScape recently, you’re probably thinking of OSRS.

u/Any_Promise_449 1d ago

You should add that OSRS is the largest game by a mile

135

u/Stevanti 1d ago

Largest in term of player count, not in term of content. RS3 has way more content, but it has gotten too much and too overwhelming for me to return.

I quit shortly after the Evolution of Combat, that is when RuneScape lost its identity. But I could not bring myself to lose all progression and start over on OSRS, so I left it at that.

The RS4 project has my attention, I hope it succeeds but am sceptical as the market for upcoming MMORPGs is fairly saturated with massive releases.

I played Runescape 1 and 2 for 10 years. logged in RS3 for about 25.5 seconds and noped out

The fucking clutter on the screen

46

u/Azathoth321 1d ago

As an RS3 main. Yes.

However, they finally have at least, importable UI setups to make it BETTER. but the default shouldn't be THAT bad.

Thankfully, that's part of the announcements is a cleanup, alongside API to have similarity to Runelite

3

u/Technical-Toe-4162 1d ago

Is there a good ui that the community prefers over others?

4

u/Alone_Look9576 1d ago

Since last leagues they introduced new legacy ui, which I prefer over my custom ui's for the most part due to resizing the client constantly. So if the classic ui is fine with you you got legacy

3

u/Fredasa 1d ago

Never played RS, but Everquest was my life in 1999-2001ish. And the above comment is how I felt when I jumped in for a legacy server experiment and was presented with the UI of a game whose roots were 1999 but which had been updated with staples and glue for two decades.

4

u/dflame45 1d ago

That's an excuse. It's not like the classic UI was good.

3

u/Outlashed 18h ago

OSRS UI is very lackluster and barebones, but as we learn what we want, we can either enable it or find plugins for it. (Expanding UI as needed arises)

RS3 UI is very filled and has everything - Issue is that people get massively overwhelmed because they don’t know what they need of it, and gets confused trying to figure it out.

OSRS UI is definitely the better of the 2.

It’s the same way that other games as you’re getting into them, has many UI elements completely hidden, until you reach a point where you are introduced to them.

2

u/Xagal 1d ago

It’s been pretty much fixed imo. The default layout is basically osrs now

They would have gotten so many additional players if they would have let us port our original characters into OSRS. I wanted to play OSRS over RS3, but I was NOT starting a 1500 hour MMO grind all over again.

8

u/1976dave 1d ago

I was majorly bummed starting mine over but with the power of an adults attention span I have to say I got back to where I was pretty quick. And that was like, 8 or 9 years ago that I started over now. Theres so many new training methods and activities some of the really majorly slow grinds are much, much shorter now.

I'm going to need you to take a seat right there. Runescape Classic shut down 8 years ago.

12

2016 was last year, right?

6

u/PMagicUK 1d ago

2006 was 5 years ago right?

34

u/The_Law_of_Pizza 1d ago

Which is the one where I wore an extremely rare party hat and sat on the border of the wilderness selling anchovy pizzas in rainbow letters?

34

u/ImperatorBTW 1d ago

Almost surely RS2. When people think RuneScape from “back in the day,” it’s usually RS2.

15

u/The_Law_of_Pizza 1d ago

Out of curiosity I just looked it up, and it was actually RS1.

I played in 02 and 03, before a dumb friend told THAT ASSHOLE Zack my password and he stole my account.

And apparently they turned off PvP in the wilderness? I had no idea - just saw it on the games timeline. What the absolute fuck?

10

u/G1zStar 1d ago

before a dumb friend told THAT ASSHOLE Zack my password and he stole my account

and this is why they stress not to tell your password to anyone.

u/Morthra PC 16h ago

They removed pvp from the wilderness because a lot of people used it to RMT.

Instead you had clan wars and bounty hunter as structured pvp minigames (the latter being risky, the former being safe as a team game). In order to make the wildy feel dangerous, you had revenants that would try to kill you instead; they would fight like an actual player would and killing them was lucrative.

RS2 homies will never forget having a near decade of gameplay into our accounts thrown into RS3 evolution of combat prison.

Nobody asked for WoW style action bar combat and we had no choice in it. You like runescape for being runescape? Well too bad, we are porting your characters over to this mtx filled cookie cutter mmo game and you can't play actual runescape anymore.

I don't think newer players understand just how screwed up it was. Imagine Jagex took your OSRS characters, ported them to RS3, then deleted OSRS entirely. Then they tell you to get over it because Jagex has a different vision for the future of runescape.

It's been all these years and I'm still salty.

15

u/ImperatorBTW 1d ago

I still am proud to say I have access to my original account and could log in via username. Unfortunately it’s just an alt account though since I made an Ironman when the gamemode released, but there’s still that moment of satisfaction every time being able to login without an email

5

u/ABoxOfJuice 1d ago

same here, having an account old enough to drink is kind of an accomplishment

4

u/Vuokki20 1d ago

Those were the sad days. I ended up playing for a few months after EOC. The first new boss (Kalphite king) in that system was a somewhat funny experience, but overall the whole game became way too different and messy to enjoy for long term.

Years later did a OSRS comeback and even after quitting that like 5-6 years ago I still watch some OSRS content from YouTube. Oh boy the growth that game has had from its humble beginnings in like early 2013.

4

u/Alexexy 1d ago

The original combat rework was fucking trash.

They progressively made it better and there was a big rework again earlier this year that made each individual skill more useful.

Before, you had like 3-4 overlapping skills that you used as filler while waiting for your cooldowns to come down or your resource to build.

3

u/Mundane-Remove2879 1d ago

yeah that eoc prison was rough, they really did that to us

5

u/osrsgone 1d ago

Yeah screw EOC, my poor account ruined.

Damn, that's crazy to me speaking as a 30+ year old gamer. Runescape 2 was absolutely huge when I was a kid, it seemed like it was one of the most popular MMORPGs at the time. It's blowing my mind that we've entered an era where it's unknown.

When they re-released it as OSRS it was also quite a big deal from what I remember, although maybe that was just within certain circles.

29

u/Yeon_Yihwa 1d ago

osrs actually had its record year this year. It peaked at 240k concurrent which would put it top 5 on steam.

And the game itself peaked at 1,3m monthly subs.

Plus runescape dragonwilds has sold 1,5m copies and reached 3m players (thx to gamepass and ps plus) yes first runescape game on console.

The ip is pretty much at its highest right now.

9

u/confusing_roundabout 1d ago

I think it's more that a lot of people didn't know it by number. I played RuneScape during that era but I was a kid and I just called it "RuneScape".

4

u/jlharper 1d ago

Even that itself is pretty mind bending. Runescape 2 was huge news when it was announced, and the release went crazy. It was such a huge improvement over classic. My whole school went crazy for it, there was so much theory crafting about what they'd change once it was announced.

I guess it was 22 years ago...

4

u/confusing_roundabout 1d ago

Haha fair. Maybe I was a bit too young. I just knew RuneScape was the game on the family computer and I spent my entire time on it killing cows in that one field lmao. Maybe I'm not the best person to weigh in here, actually.

3

u/jlharper 1d ago

Every point of view is valid and there's probably more people who agree with you than with me! I bet there were a heap of people even back then who never played RS1 or knew it existed and who started with RS2, and only ever knew it as Runescape.

2

u/mapletree23 1d ago

i mean technically peaking, people always talk about the big 3 MMO's a being WoW, FFXIV, and GW2, but the reality is more like you take GW2 out and have RS there and it's been that way for awhile really

i think people just usually tend to slap the 'modern mmo' which ends up excluding RS, but it's pretty much always had a very healthy population

with world of warcraft having modern, classic, and forever as seperate games and now runescape running osrs, rs3, and rs4 in parallel it looks like mmo companies are learning what beverage companies learned decades ago: there is no one perfect product that everyone will like. make multiple flavors of your product to capture a larger market.

26

u/RightRudderr 1d ago

For sure and honestly it makes sense. The amount of times I go into the WoW subreddit and see a popular opinion there that sounds absolutely abysmal to me is very frequent. And likewise the things that I enjoy so much about the game are full fledged reasons why others quit playing. MMOs in general are such massive undertakings that draw interest from a wide variety of people its literally impossible to cater to them all. In many cases its impossible to cater to even a majority.

Meanwhile GGG made a different game just to slowly turn it into a copy

5

u/PlayfulSurprise5237 1d ago

Lmao. Chris Wilson sitting back in retirement thinking "I told you guys it wouldn't work"

I applaud them for trying though.

They just didn't commit hard enough to the vision of a different game. I think they got scared when they chose to pivot from a POE1 successor and the apes of the POE1 community went rabid on 0.1.0 EA launch.

1 foot in 1 community, the other in a community of people like me who would have liked to have something more balanced, a little less spreadsheety, with slower more meaningful combat.

5

u/Appropriate-Swan3881 21h ago

I think poe 2 did one major mistake which made their slow and deliberate combat fail and that is they kept mobs faster than the player character. Looking at games like Elden ring, you cant have enemies move faster than the player unless you plan to make some enemies overwhelm you (like bears).

Guild Wars 1,2 and 3 in 2028 as well

6

u/Clayskii0981 1d ago

Guild wars also about to run 1, 2, and newly 3 in parallel as well

5

u/perolan 13h ago

I agree, but Jagex sort of started this trend with OSRS way before WoW classic came out. It’s actually one of the big justifications and use cases the community pointed to constantly for years while begging for classic.

Which actually gives me a decent amount of confidence / hope for whatever RS4 is going to be, that Jagex actually properly planned and thought this through and it isn’t just band wagoning on whatever blizzard is doing

Considering RuneScape dragonwilds was successful I’m betting RuneScape 4 is going to be a world of Warcraft like experience.

Old school RuneScape players are not going to like unreal engine

37

u/No-Progress-8597 1d ago

I was just wondering in the middle of dragonwilds on why they didnt just turn this into a new rs game

36

u/rowanbladex 1d ago

That's most likely what's actually happening. They said the origin of RS4 was the team working on a dragon wilds expansion that got a little out of control.

16

u/Grasle 1d ago

MMOs are risky and expensive. Testing out concepts on a less ambitious project first is a good way to reduce that risk.

Half the OSRS players freaking out on the OSRS sub, about the guy testing DLSS on Runescape. So yeah they're probably gonna get feral over Unreal lol.

16

u/Cool_of_a_Took 1d ago edited 23h ago

Why would they be freaking out about a completely separate game? They don't have to play it.

Edit: I've confused some people. I am very much a part of the OSRS community lol. I was asking why the other commenter would think that because it's definitely not coming from the sub, and it wouldn't even make sense. Go search "rs4" on r/2007scape if you need to. The vast majority are very excited.

15

u/knokout64 1d ago

You don't know the OSRS community, it takes VERY little to rile them up.

5

u/nick2k23 1d ago

Because of the history of the games, RuneScape 3 used to be osrs before certain infamous big updates. Osrs only exists because the community voted with their wallets. So naturally they’re scared jagex will fuck things up again.

3

u/Periuga_vamshot 19h ago

The point of playing a game like OSRS though is due to hardware accessibility, at least for many players. I'm playing on a shit £200 laptop with an integrated graphics card that won't even run the HD plugin for OSRS.

Adding extra barriers like that will restrict who plays it. Bear in mind back in the day you could literally play RuneScape on your internet explorer browser straight from Miniclip.

OSRS players don’t just inherently hate anything with modern graphics, we just don’t want them to change OUR game for the worse (again).

I sincerely hope it goes in the direction of a classic MMO like WoW or FFXIV and not some variation of dragonwilds. Combine that with a monthly plan to ensure quality and no p2w bs like 90% of the freemium mmo slop we've gotten these past few years, and I think they will be on to something. Runescape has a lot of awesome lore, personal branding, and nostalgia to easily capitalize on.

Classic -> Runescape 2(OSRS) -> RS3(evolution of combat)

Not sure classic has any servers available anymore though

11

u/Vuokki20 1d ago

People like to think that EOC update was the day RS2 became RS3 but that's not the case technically, even though de facto it can be seen as the dividing point.

Evolution of combat happened in November of 2012 and RS2 got updated to RS3 in summer of 2013.

Oldschool RS/07 was released early 2013 and it was from the start a separate mode. So OSRS and RS2 existed simultaneously for a while.

Eventually years later RSC servers got shut down too.

46

u/FlameStaag 1d ago

Not official ones

EOC wasn't technically the start of 3, it was a graphics overhaul not too long after.

16

u/kadran2262 1d ago

There were lots of things that led to it. To me that was just the part where it truly went from RS2 to RS3

So crazy. RS3 seemed like the end after so many years of OSRS support parallel.

I wonder if they'll run OSRS, RS3, and RS4 parallel or they just move on?

47

u/MrLugi 1d ago

Think it will depend on RS3 numbers. Seems like the whole recovery thing dindt bring in more players but made it stable. So my bet would be that rs3 dev team will slim down and the main focus will be on rs4

10

u/AiBestGirl95 1d ago

They said all of them will run side by side but I think a lot of it depends on numbers, in particular if Reignited boosts RS3 numbers, running 3 memos with 3 separate dev teams concurrently takes a lot of resources and money.

8

u/Tarasios 1d ago

Reignited is going to kill RS3 numbers lol. They're making it so all existing characters are divided from any new player who joins the game, with split economies and you can't do group bosses together. So over time old veterans will either quit or have to make a new character to interact with any new players...

5

u/Killerx09 1d ago

They're making it so all existing characters are divided from any new player

How is this a bad thing when I don't have to play with the MTX-ridden accounts who progressed ahead just because they could whale on the game for the last decade?

9

u/lazymangrove 1d ago

You can max an account in a couple months. Old mains getting lamps does nothing to the new player experience. The only thing that makes being a new player hard is the lack of main accounts in the economy. You cant garuntee you'll be able to find an item on ge right now without paying high prices. Splitting the economy will make it worse but ignite characters won't notice it for awhile because they'll all be buying the same items and collecting them

They would have never started the whole recovery thing is RS4 was meant to replace RS3. RS4 was in development before RS3's recovery started. I think the plan is to pull in the people who look at OSRS and think "that looks like shit" and look at RS3 and think "that game's reputation is ruined" as well as action rpg fans and the like. The intent is to have fingers in every pie. Every company has that intent these days. If there's a market share they don't have, they want it.

As is, Jagex's statement is that RS4 will run alongside OSRS, RS3, and Dragonwilds.

8

u/m0bw0w 1d ago

They have said OSRS, RS3, Dragonwilds, and Rs4 are all running parallel.

6

u/Clayskii0981 1d ago

The plan is parallel.

- OSRS is extremely popular. Full development continues.

  • RS3 was hard bleeding but they seemed to have fixed a lot of issues and stabilized it. We'll see if it goes maintenance mode.
  • RS4 seems to be its own thing. Dragonwilds seems like it was an Unreal test for this. Despite the name, it doesn't look like it'll replace RS3 in any way. I guess they'll see if it pops off or anything.

6

u/htoirax 1d ago

The answer to your questions are on the page linked.

"It sits alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds as an independent experience"

"RS4 will be set in Gielinor, in the Sixth Age. But we're beginning somewhere that RuneScape players have only recently started to discover - and that is Ashenfall. An area first explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, and a landmass to the north-east of the Gielinor."

I recently canceled a WoW account I've had since the very beginning. Still have the original CDs. The last expansion was the first one where I just didn't care enough to even finish the campaign.

As I'm currently playing dragonwilds wishing it was an mmo and they announce 4 supposedly built off of drangonwilds feedback for it to be an mmo 😁😁😁

24

u/FlameStaag 1d ago

I'm kinda torn. I'll have to wait and see what it looks like. But with how they've learned from OSRS and applied it to RS3, I'm fairly optimistic.

I love OSRS but I do hate that most of the challenge is fighting against its ancient jank. It's unique but not really something I can ever apply myself to learning. An actual modern version could be great, though if it has EOC style combat I probably won't touch it. I can't stand EOC.

7

u/ReynardVulpini 1d ago

It is not going to be an alternate to OSRS and RS3. It's going to be an MMO Dragonwilds I believe they said.

6

u/Officer_Hotpants 1d ago

For YEARS I've been wanting an MMO with action combat. I love the grind and player economy of OSRS, I love the combat of Souls games, and I was a big Destiny raider back in the day, and nothing has really scratched that itch either but I know OSRS raid mechanics are pretty cool.

If they get some good, tight combat mechanics and intricate, action-oriented raid mechanics for small groups, this is the only game I'll ever play for the rest of time.

5

u/Katoptrix 1d ago

Did you play New World? What did you like or dislike about it in terms of what you'd want in a game like this. I feel like it spoiled me for any other mmo combat wise, like yeah it wasn't perfect but I can't go back to non action combat mmos.

I played it a bit in release but it felt weird and clunky to me. Closer to Skyrim combat but without the world building of an Elder Scrolls game. And Skyrim isn't exactly renowned for combat mechanics.

I dropped it pretty soon after release tbh

Companies need to stop announcing games years ahead of showing anything substantial. What's the point. The game just becomes a meme at some point and can never live up any hype people build in their heads. Just quietly work on the game and just shadow drop early access.

27

u/scribe-kiddie 1d ago

Reading the article would have clear that up. It's for early player feedback, as they've done with big updates in OSRS (and maybe RS3 idk).

→ More replies (6)

18

u/0430ke 1d ago

Because OSRS is community driven and that's the plan for RS4. Community will be apart of it throughout the entire process.

Talent attraction, investors, early playerbase response to the idea.

I knew dragonwilds was gonna be the start of another mmo for jagex. From day 1.

37

u/yboy403 1d ago

If it wasn't for Reignited I'd actually be hyped about this. I think a new game only makes sense in their ecosystem if RS3 accounts stream into the new game, but nobody's trusting those accounts to be worth a cup of dogwater in a few years' time.

32

u/m0bw0w 1d ago edited 1d ago

Only makes sense if RS3 accounts stream into it? Complete opposite. It only makes sense as a new game. Why would there be any cross-progression in an entirely different format? Why would you even want that? You're skipping the entire core of the game in a new format which is the whole point.

Edit: Not the mention the economy of the game, which RS3's is famously shit.

14

u/Fine-Needleworker661 1d ago

yeah i know i wouldnt try it if there would be maxed rs3 players with bils of gold on day 1

8

u/m0bw0w 1d ago

Yeah it would such a horrendous decision to cross-progress a game with a famously shit economy to the point they're literally launching fresh start characters to make a new economy.

2

u/DarkflowNZ 1d ago

Personally I couldn't really care less about my rs3 account right now and I'd very much prefer a fresh start, even if it was a 1:1 remake of the game in a new engine with (ideally) less spaghetti.

I don't see those accounts as an investment like some do. I had fun playing and when the fun stopped I stopped playing. It's the probably the reason I don't vibe with old school as much

I’m still grieving new world.

8

u/Wildest12 1d ago

I got really into it on release. Was near the top of my server, in all the first wars etc. Shame they got greedy and tried to speedrun microtransactions.

Jagex seems to currently understand what they do to mmos long term health so i am optimistic. I do still play osrs though so obvious bias.

13

u/HolidayNick 1d ago

I would be so pissed if they merged rs3 and existing accounts into a new world. RS4 will be largely molded by dragonwilds which has an entirely different system. It would make no sense and probably kill RS4 before it even released if they sent rs3 account up into rs4.

4

u/Rhysing 1d ago

You're confused on what it is. It is not an evolution of RS3.

It is a new version of Runescape altogether. Of course everyone will have fresh accounts on the game that is brand new.

2

u/Clayskii0981 1d ago

It looks like it's a whole new game, not like previous numbered updates.

1

u/ArielSoto 1d ago

Counter-point: Ironman accounts already exist and they don't add anything to the economy, but I don't see people crying about it.

3

u/chins4tw 1d ago

The issue with reignited is that no new players are going to pick the "regular" server over the "reignited" so as time goes on the regular server and economy will start dying off in favor of the reignited server.

This exact same thing happened in Maplestory when they made "reboot" servers which they renamed to "heroic", the result is that the regular servers are dead and people only play the heroic rebooted servers now.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/yboy403 1d ago

Not denying that nobody knows what will be, most of the concern seems to be speculative and divided between "this will devalue existing accounts over time" and "this shows that Jagex doesn't care about long-time players." FSW flopped the first time, and you're right that Ironman mode has probably strengthened the game rather than hurting it.

But if ironman accounts on release had been the default at account creation, otherwise identical to older accounts (i.e. no trading restrictions between irons), and streamed into dedicated servers with existing accounts confined to "veteran" servers, I think they would have had a negative impact. They were able to exist in parallel because of the trading restrictions making them a fundamentally different game type.

kinda crazy that mmos are making a comeback and all of a sudden theres a bunch of projects to look forward to that isnt your next asian grindfest p2w slop

8

u/Myrkana 1d ago

There wont be that much of a comeback. Every few years mmo's make a comeback and most of them fail and fade. There arent enough players who have the time for a mmo to fill the player counts for all of them.

Also theyve said its years out, so bet at least 2 years before any solid gameplay footage, 3-5 before any beta testing or anything.

u/WanderWut 1d ago

Well dam this is actually huge news, I wonder how they’ll handle monetization?

3

u/Deeep_V_Diver 1d ago

From what I gathered watching it live, this project stems from the success of dragonwilds. Players wanted to have bigger communities to interact with so I think they are taking that design and making it an MMO.

Also I see a lot of confusion on RuneScape 1,2, & 3. Rs1 is classic, rs2 is what most people probably remember runescape as from 2004-2013, and 3 is 2013-now with the evolution of combat

6

u/Scyths 13h ago

Love Dragonwilds. I expect this one to fail miserably, or not even see the light of day.

2

u/Goin_crazy 1d ago

Run eScape!

2

u/NesNobnaz 1d ago

It makes sense to do at this point. Everyone in both RS3 and OSRS knows RS3 is too tainted of a name that even if they are doing 90% of the right things, it's still a dying game. The removal of MTX was just too late and while it needed to happen, it should have happened when they were still in a pretty good spot in 2018. The overhauls this year have been fantastic, but the UI, reworked EoC, inconsistent artstyle and content bloat is really too much. I'll miss my 2003 account, but a complete reboot of a modern Runescape is 100% needed, cause if RS3 goes away, OSRS is fucked.

Rs1 is classic - no longer playable but it has 2.5d graphics. Can find community lead archive projects where you can play this

Rs2 is from like 2004 to 2012 where the game was Java based 3d graphics

Rs3 is after an update called evolution of combat and a move away from Java based graphics to C++ based graphics on the nxt client. This is 2012-2013 to current

Osrs came out in 2013 after the eoc update was incredibly unpopular and basically killed the playerbase within a week. It starts from. 2007 copy of rs2 but has taken a unique path in terms of lore, updates and gameplay. It’s basically what wow forever is. In fact I reckon it’s what inspired wow forever and wow classic because osrs is by far the more popular game today.

Dragonwilds is a survival crafting game set in the same universe. It borrows many aspects from traditional RuneScape (both osrs and rs3) but it’s a survival crafting game - not an mmo. So it’s a different genre entirely.

Rs4 is what was announced during runefest which is currently happening (like blizzcon). It’s an mmo built on the same platform as dragon wilds. Basically they’re taking the survival crafting game and saying what if this was an mmo. It’s still in development and we’ll see what it means for the future of RuneScape. Many people dislike the tile based tick based structure of RuneScape so this might be a way to introduce that along with the rs we know and love.

2

u/xs0apy 1d ago

RuneScape is one of those games I REALLY wish I could understand and enjoy. I have never been able to get it, but I DO get that many people love it so clearly I am missing something here that I wish I could understand :(

The closest I got to understanding it was watching my coworker leveling up on a fourth monitor. Apparently it’s a great game to play while doing other stuff?

Either way, RS4 has my interest. I want to finally enjoy RuneScape!!

2

u/Angel_Bmth 1d ago edited 9h ago

It’s basically virtual dopamine. It’s REALLY fun. Don’t play it

3

u/Longbenhall 1d ago

Genuinely curious, as opposed to what? That vague description goes for all MMOs lol.

4

u/secret_aardvark_420 1d ago

Yeah but OSRS in particular is very, very good at little, constant dopamine drips that build up to big ones.

Also It’s like vaping: the accessibility—being able to play at home, at Work, on mobile, is incredibly addictive because you can always be making progress.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ZombieRichardNixonx 1d ago

In addition to what the others said, Runescape, especially OSRS, is unusually good at permanence. Very little content in OSRS ever becomes truly obsolete, so even if you left for five years, when you get back, your character is as good as it was when you left. This makes progression incredibly rewarding, because your character is basically a long-term project that can never be taken away from you through obsolescence.

3

u/Longbenhall 1d ago

Isn't that just horizontal progression? Same can be said for gw2 no?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/No-Progress-8597 1d ago

Number go up, everything you do makes some kind of number increase. The gameplay apart from end game content is ancient and not really that fun, but its satisfying

3

u/Longbenhall 1d ago

Very apt description and I do agree. Had a convo with my friend recently about it. As someone who's spent at least a few hundreds of hours on my account atm. Its funny to me how hooked me and other people are on the game when I actually think about it, during my daily gameplay, how much FUN am I actually having? And honestly, not a lot lol. I can't really describe any of my grinds to be very FUN. Most slayer tasks I get are tedious and boring as hell, fishing is extremely boring, agility is the worst skill in any video game i've played, mining is boring as hell.

LIke majority part of the game you do quite boring gameplay.. Yet we still love it.. Its interesting how much dopamine of leveling up can carry a game.

Obviously im not saying the game doesnt have good things, questing, music, world vibe/setting etc. But overall, the actual gameplay of runescape is extremely boring, but I love it anyway.

2

u/SpartansATTACK 1d ago

I was just trying to explain that to one of my friends recently when I was on a specific grind. He asked what I was doing and I told him I was playing OSRS, he asked if I was having fun and I was like "honestly, not really, it's more like a mild addiction" lol

2

u/The_Crazy_Cat_Guy 16h ago

I hated it until i understood it in osrs. Now I think it’s part of the charm. Seriously when you learn inferno/colosseum it opens the game up so much. You start to understand this game is just so unique. The only game that’s close to osrs is rs3. And there are no games out there that are similar to either at all.

RS1 was the era of classic between 2001 and 2004

RS2 is the update that is currently OSRS that originally arrived in 2004

RS3 is the modern version of the game that existed since 2001

3

u/HorsNoises 1d ago

Old School is Runescape 2 (well technically it has kinda moved beyond it, but still was based off it) and the "main" version is Runescape 3.

2

u/Noximilien01 1d ago

Runescape classic was R1 osrs is a save from r2 they updated and r3 is the modern game.

You can basically think of them of 1.0. 2.0 and 3.0

3

u/nexusmadao 1d ago

Why wouldnt they make runescapre 5 on unreal 5

2

u/infinitay_ 1d ago

Gonna be interesting to see what RS4 entails. I assume it'll be like a WoW-style game with dedicated classes and that open-world 1st/3rd person feeling rather than a top-up vibe if that makes sense. Nevertheless, I feel like their recent Dragonwild's game kind of fits that niche.

45

u/remakeprox 1d ago

No way in hell they're ditching what Runescape makes Runescape, namely being class-less and everyone can skill everything

11

u/althoradeem 1d ago

If rs4 isnt anything but tickless runescape they can keep it

8

u/Thegreenpander 1d ago

I think this is what most of us want. Just a modernized runescape. Like actually modernized and no click to move. Not the “modernized” rs3.

6

u/AustinTheMoonBear 1d ago

New World without all the issues but in runescape is basically what I want.

DragonWilds but MMO and in Gielinor

Tbh i want it to be click to move, just not with that 600ms tickrate.

What made me love runescape is the semi afk aspect of it, playing it on a second monitor while I do something else, it tickled a specific part of my brain.

if that is lost I legit have no interest in the game. Glad they won’t abandon osrs or rs3 tho.

I'm 99 percent positive that it won't have classes. By all accounts it should be like Dragonwilds but MMO.

Probably a mix between New World and Dragonwilds. Frankly, I can't wait.

2

u/unibrowcowmeow 16h ago

This is my exact hope. Combine the new gen combat of NW/Dragonwilds with the classic skilling/progression of Runescape and jagex will be printing money. New World already felt so inspired by RS, my optimism is high.

1000% it’s gonna be built like Dragonwilds + the mmo portion like actual rs. They did Dragonwilds amazing so I can only assume this is going to be done well and with love.

5

u/Honolulu-Blues 1d ago

I’m going to assume it’s not because that’s not RuneScape like at all.

3

u/ElyxUW 1d ago

They mentioned Dragonwilds and the response by the players to it being the basis for the game.

6

u/GrayJinjo 1d ago

That doesn’t make much sense to me. It wouldn’t be RuneScape at all anymore.

Not to mention with WoW releasing Forever in a month it would be really stupid to try and compete against that with a WoW clone.

4

u/FlyChigga 1d ago

I think it’s gonna be much more of an mmo dragonwilds sandbox type game than WoW. Completely different type of game

2

Don't know if they'll go the class route like WoW, but if the teaser is an indication...I'd welcome mounts in the world especially if they are expanding the scale with this new iteration.

2

u/ReynardVulpini 1d ago

I believe that this game is more forking off of Dragonwilds than off of OSRS and RS3. I wonder if the game will not be a bit more FF14 than WoW

It is just going to be the MMO version of dragonwilds so I highly doubt it will have classes.

1

u/BlueGoliath 1d ago

built in Unreal Engine

For fucks sake.

42

u/MJC561 1d ago

Why does everyone Ree when they see Unreal Engine? I am genuinely curious.

17

u/ShiftAltRight 1d ago

You've got a lot of UE5 games that aren't optimized well, and people assume that means that the engine is inherently flawed + they must have the same 'Unreal' aesthetic.

Split Fiction, The First Descendant, Expedition 33 etc. were all made on UE5 and run great and also prove that the art direction is entirely up to the studio. The reality is that UE5 is simply more accessible so you get a ton of games made with the engine.

7

u/TisMeDA 1d ago

I feel like Dragonwilds has been pretty solid all around too. I haven't played since Alpha though

→ More replies (1)

18

u/ChrisFromIT 1d ago

Because a lot of games in the early days of Unreal Engine 5 were fairly unoptimized and just ran horribly because a lot of developers thought that just relying on the features of Unreal Engine 5 was all the optimizations they needed.

→ More replies (14)

6

u/m0bw0w 1d ago

Because people lack critical thinking. UE5 gives devs a lot of options and streamlines making games. Because of this, there's been a lot of slop from devs who use UE5 as a crutch, and so people blame the engine itself as a poor engine.

It's a tool like anything else, and Jagex has shown us they can use it quite well.

3

u/Mizahri 1d ago

Cause most devs don't put in the time to optimize so a lot of UE games run like shit

4

u/Wildest12 1d ago

Dragonwilds is basicaly a tech demo for this game though so they will have a head start on optimization.

3

u/ChrimsonRed 1d ago

They expect the company to spend 200m making an engine like microslop w/ slipspace only to shelve it a couple years later. They don’t realize how difficult it is to make a modern gaming engine.
