Photo Congratulations to Lance Stroll for Completing his 1st Full Race This Year
First race for Lance this year where he not DNF'd or being lapped. Amazing job from him
Great weekend in general for Aston Martin. Alonso got points for the team and they had a pretty strong weekend

when rain drops, Stroll gets possessed by Senna

The same thing went through my head, too.

u/DogWithaFAL Sir Lewis Hamilton 2h ago
Senna told the team he could stay out and then put it into the barrier within 3 seconds or went off on a formation lap and drove into a sand pit willingly?

I know it’s all a big meme but Stroll is genuinely WAY better in the wet for some reason. It’s like he unlocks a new level as soon as the rain starts.

u/SomniumOv I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16h ago
Silly theory : He has a terrible feel for grip, and adapted to driving like that.
When it rains, everyone else loses that advantage they have over him.198
u/PascalG16 Fernando Alonso 14h ago
Exactly. His strong point is reflexes, and has a poor feel for grip. Relatively to other drivers.

u/Hot_Most5332 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago
Honestly at this point his main issue seems to be his mental. As so many have noticed, he looks like he hates everything

Have generational wealth to inherit but forced to do something mentally taxing for a decade…
31
u/CL-MotoTech Ted Kravitz 7h ago
It’s the other way around. The rain is generally much harder and harder to feel grip. Good drivers usually outshine their hardware in poor conditions.
Source: was race car driver

u/primaryrhyme 6h ago
Also poor feel for fast driving, tire management and racecraft. Other than that he’s a solid driver
30

u/TwoBionicknees 12h ago
it's easier than that. you see him yanking his steering wheel all over through most corners, he has no feel for grip as you say. HIs constant steering wheel acting and sliding causes tire temp, he overheats and overwears his tires and has since day one. In wet qualifying this means incredible tire warm up when it's one of those sessions where getting the right lap in at the right time, pitting for new inters and then putting in a hotlap Stroll's excessive tire warm up is suddenly a boon. In wet races he shot off into the distance in turkey, for 5 laps, then his pace was gone. IIRC it was something like an 8 second lead over perez in 5-6 laps, then a few laps later he's pitting from a second ahead of perez before he's passed.
His dire tire wear and poor control works solely when super quick warm up for wet qualifying is great.
68
u/proudlysydney I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12h ago
“Dire tyre wear” would be incorrect, looking back at Pirelli’s tyre graphics from the last couple seasons Stroll consistently pops up doing the longest stints on compounds during races. It’s not something a lot of people give him credit for but he can pull some good tyre management.
The other thing is also wrong- Fernando described Lance as being more sensitive to grip changes than he is (and therefore giving different feedback). He’s constantly adjusting his lines etc for the grip levels he feels, meaning that he finds it a lot more difficult to replicate a strong lap in quali- what worked for him the last lap feels different the next. In the dry it means he can struggle in quali finding perfection; other drivers find their ideal line and work to replicate it as much as possible, he can’t do that as much. Where that works is in the wet, where all drivers are doing that adjustment every lap, so it suits the way he normally drives.

u/Doorknob11 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago
I think it’s more that he drives mainly on feel specifically. Which in the dry is will only get you so far.

So, when everybody else underperforms in the rain, he overperforms...relatively speaking. F1 Quantum Entanglement!
Stroll's new nickname is "Spooky Action at a Distance" 🤣

u/sysasysa I was here for the Hulkenpodium 18h ago
Unless he is in position to score points in Sochi.
Or do we collectively not talk about that?
68
u/czerwona_latarnia I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago
I guess the correct way would be saying that Stroll is way better on Intermediate/Wet tyre.
Unless his Brazil (pre-)race performance was on those too.
43
u/sysasysa I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago
Brazil 2024 he was on inters. So basically he is either really good, or really bad. No inbetween.
36
u/Blithering_idiot1406 Red Bull 17h ago
let us consider Brazil 2024 as an outlier. Even Max and Lewis have had those over the years..
3
u/trivinium Aston Martin 13h ago
You slip due to wet conditions, with cold tires, happens. But the way he put himself into the gravel to beach himself... that is the facepalm moment for me.
3
u/TwoBionicknees 12h ago
stroll is good for tire warm up, he's done his best wet performances in qualifying and only qualifying. AM plainly made a huge step, they already got into Q2 in the dry, people are acting like AM had some massive step due to the rain, which maybe helped but Alonso was just as bad off as Ham in the rain till the safety car reset.
In actual wet races he's mostly bad, this one barely counts. Soft runners were slow today, but outside of a caddy, none actually had issues staying on track after a lap, they were just hella slow. Then the race turned into a dry race and that's where AM did pretty well.

His overtake on Ocon was great, but of course nobody noticed.
We know how fierce Ocon is in defence. Nando passed him so quickly only because Ocon ran wide. Stroll had to do it the hard way.
42
u/ominousrock 17h ago
Aston screwing him once again with pointless pit stop to get Alonso into free air as well as SC bad luck screwing him twice. That will all go unnoticed since AM are hyping Alonso. Would've been easy double points but AM clearly doesn't care...

When I see in FB people dissin like this, those people are mostly couch potatos themselves.2
u/President_of_Space Ferrari 4h ago
I think both things can be true .. that Stroll is legitimately talented, and has had more success in F1 than many Drivers that are typically perceived as "better" than him; but also that at this point, the only real reason he is still in F1 is because his Dad pays for his seat. Which is a real thing throughout Carting and Motorsport.

It is wild that he is one of the select few people on earth to be an F1 driver. I wonder how he got his seat...
→ More replies (1)13
u/DragoxDrago 9h ago
Tbf i think he initially deserved his seat. He's not a complete bum, but he's mentally checked out and should have got the can awhile ago.
He's far from the most undeserving driver to ever race.
1
u/primaryrhyme 6h ago
His dad paid $80m for his first seat.
2
u/DragoxDrago 5h ago
Still the second youngest driver to score a podium, and did so in his rookie season. He also won F3(albeit with some huge backing that orders didn't get)
Regardless of whether his seat was paid for, that's still impressive and shows he at least had some talent.
I'm not arguing whether he paid for his seat, he obviously did, I'm just arguing with people that treat him the same as Mazepin
1
u/primaryrhyme 5h ago
Sure, but you said he deserved his seat. If he deserved it then he would’ve gotten a drive on merit, you don’t drop $80m for shits and giggles.
He’s very good for a pay driver but he would never be in F1 without enormous financial backing.
1
u/gamepleng 4h ago
First I want to state that he's not slow, he's inconsistent.
Second, his pre-F1 career is marked by plenty of paid tests in current or previous reg cars, and paying for extra ingenering support in F2 and F3. Teammates had to let him through and drive for him testing setups.
I'm not gonna deny there's some talent in him, driving that fast is intrinsically hard. I'm not gonna deny either that he's had all the resources to develop that talent where others had fight much harder (and arguably have more talent). Yet talent only gets you so far.
