As an American Democrat who has done and will continue to do everything within reason to oppose Trump and Republicans generally, I am really fucking frustrated (honestly infuriated) with the wave of hatred from non-Americans stoked by Trump's antics, which appears to no longer be restricted to the right wing but is now directed at all Americans.
I vote Democrat in every election, I tend to support more progressive candidates even among that field, and I donate money when I can. Apparently that is no longer enough, and I am literally expected to be flipping over cars in the street and throwing molotov cocktails in open rebellion against the (sadly) democratically-elected government.
To be clear: I hate Trump and his excesses, his overstepping, his poisonous discourse, etc., and I hate Republican policy. However, conditions here are nowhere near meeting the criteria for revolution. I think non-Americans see our loudest and most disturbing headlines and assume those are the norm here. They appear to think that there are abusive, assault-rifle-toting cops and ICE agents on every street corner terrorizing the populace and inflicting tyranny in the name of Trump, and we're all meekly acquiescing and trembling in our homes, afraid to walk the streets.
In reality, nothing even remotely resembling this is the case. Yes, there have been some terrible headlines and some terrible things have happened, but life for the vast, vast majority of Americans is no different than it has ever been. We move about freely and go about our lives with zero limitations. I would further venture to say that most Americans have never even laid eyes on an ICE agent. Consequently, when incredulous non-Americans cry "How are you guys not rioting in the streets yet?!?" it sounds absolutely insane to us. As gross as Trump and his big mouth are, day-to-day life here is no different than it was under Biden or Obama before him. We go to work, we come home, we spend our evenings and weekends doing whatever we want with our friends and families. We will vote Republicans out in the coming mid-terms and in the presidential election in 2 years, and that solution is far more reasonable and practical than open rebellion.
Most of the perspectives being thrown at me from outsiders are completely ignorant and uninformed. Some examples:
- I have been told by people who have never so much as set foot in the U.S.--without a trace of irony--that I am wrong about all of the above and that Americans are so ignorant that they actually know what is happening here better than I do.
- I constantly get the Second Amendment thrown in my face. "You've all been jerking off to the Second Amendment for so long, and this is what it's for and you hypocrites/cowards aren't even using it!" Complete failure to understand that the Second Amendment extremists ARE TRUMP'S SUPPORTERS! The rest of us have never said jack shit about the Second Amendment and actually support stricter gun control measures.
- We're told that we're ostriches with our heads in the sand, too meek and cowardly to protest against circumstances, failing to realize that there have literally been record numbers of protests here against the Trump administration.
- Anytime any American argues that they really can't afford to go off and die pointlessly in a gunfight with government or protest 24/7 in cities around the country because they need to go to work for money/health benefits for their families, they get dragged for not having universal healthcare and for bothering to try to keep up benefits because the insurance carriers will just deny all their claims. "You should have universal health care, dumbass." Yes, I know we should fucking have universal health care, but I can't make that happen overnight, and while it's true that our health care system sucks, it's completely disingenuous to suggest that the insurance coverage we do have through our jobs doesn't work at all and isn't beneficial to our families and is easily dismissed.
About 65% of Americans support stricter gun control and universal healthcare. Yes, I know it should be much higher, but I am tired of being treated like policies that less than half of us support are some sort of unanimous American scream into the void.
This sort of sentiment has become so pervasive that I think I'm probably going to have to largely step away from most online discussion spaces, other than maybe some relatively benign fan forums that don't get into politics. I think it's really a shame that those of us who have never subscribed to the bullshit in government right now and continue to oppose it in any reasonable way we can have been turned on by our political allies abroad. I have always admired European values, culture and progressivism, but since I appear to be hated by a not-insubstantial segment of their population, I really have no desire to ever visit or engage with them again, and that's really sad and unfortunate.
