Fox publicly revealed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998 and founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000, which has since become a major force in funding Parkinson’s research.

Speaking after the ceremony, Fox reflected on what receiving the honor meant to him as a Canadian.
“It’s so many things. But mostly it’s just growing up in Canada, loving this country, loving what it stands for and how it’s progressed and corrected course when it needed to, and stayed the course when it needed to,” he told The Canadian Press.
