Mod Update: Banning Low Effort Posts & Recruiting Moderators

Hi guys -

There have been a handful of different posts in the last few months specifically asking to address some of the low effort, low quality posts we often see on this subreddit. I think people have gotten overly fixated on the perceived influx of Indian student questions (please giv roadmap, etc.), but there have always been the same type of low-quality posts coming up from other sources:

  • Please suggest a capstone project
  • Help me with my homework
  • I hate my professor, recommend me a textbook

And so on. So for now, we won't be adding new flairs or filters, but instead we'll just ramp up moderation effort to remove low quality and low effort posts of this nature, and we'll keep this thread stickied for the foreseeable future.

At present, the majority of the moderators are inactive, so I need to ask for some folks to apply. My criteria at present is below:

  • Relatively frequent poster in /r/ece and related subs
  • Account age at least a few years
  • Must be a practicing engineer in the field or at least in your PhD program

To apply, simply submit a message to the moderators (not me personally, not a reply in this thread) with the words "positive feedback" in your first line, and describe in just a few sentences your education / professional background and what you think you'd like to see change on the subreddit. No need for a LinkedIn link or anything, but please don't bullshit. No one gets paid, and moderating isn't exactly fun.

Finally, I'd ask for everyone else to make judicious use of the report button. It's the easiest way for moderators to do their jobs, since highly reported posts simply get a big red "spam" button for us to push and remove the post. Don't abuse it for every single post you don't like, but we'll start utilizing it as well as Automod to clean things up more.

Thanks for your help and thanks for your patience.

Confused about this circuit

Saw this circuit on youtube by Question Solutions on superposition, I was puzzled because it says here that the two ends will cause a short circuit. However I interpret it all as one node combined. How come it's a short circuit on this part is it true that this is a shorted circuit?

I still think that it can be considered as one node.

Switching to EE

Hi there!

I’m currently a 4th year electrician apprentice and looking to see if switching my career to electrical engineering would be a good move?

I feel stuck with the current role I am in and looking at the health risks on my body is weighing me down.

I know if I switch it would be the case of studying for 3-4 years and sacrificing the money I would be making as a qualified electrician. I would love any advice on this matter any help is greatly appreciated .

I would also love any advice on how to write a really good personal statement if university is the correct move. Over the bulk of my apprenticeship I have wired and fitted new build homes but I did do a bit of low voltage with door entry systems. Again any advice would be appreciated

How Cooked Am I: Feeling Lost in this Major

I feel so behind and like a bum. Courses and a part time job already occupy a good amount of my time. Even worse, I’m apart of two design teams and have two personal projects, but that’s it. My gpa is a 2.9 and i’m a junior. I just feel so lost and like a failure. I’m basically making this post to either uplift my feelings or come further down to reality. But the real question is still posed: How cooked am I.

ECE Boards: Advice on what books to bring and read for boards

Hello. ECE graduate here and will start reviewing on November for boards next year. I have books but I don't know the important ones to bring for my review. Some say that I shouldn't bring a lot and hoard since baka hindi naman mabasa lahat and review center's book is enough. But still wanted to read some other references.

Ano-ano mga binasa and dinala ninyo for your review po?

Undergrad Engineering Advice

I’m 18 M and an electrical engineering major undergrad student. I love electrical and truly do think it is my path in life to become an electrical engineer. I’m starting to apply for internships for this upcoming summer, any advice you would have either for the internships and in general?

Side note : I love tattoos and piercings, none of them i have right now are too noticeable, i have one forearm covered, one forearm with another big tattoo, my ears double lobe pierced, and an eyebrow piercing, im interested in getting a tattoo down the side of my neck or behind my ear, as well as an anti-eyebrow surface piercing on my right cheek. Would this hinder my job opportunities in the future, or possibly even internships? Opinions appreciated, i’ve gotten a lot of mixed feelings about visible tattoos and piercings.

Any advice is appreciated, i love to learn and want to be the best version of myself i can possibly be.

CAREER Good Free Review Sources?

I got laid off earlier this year, and have to come to find out I have nearly forgotten everything I was directly using at my old job as an embedded software engineer. I am getting wrecked in technical interviews and need something to help refresh my memory on things.

True RMS to DC converter

Post image
1 Upvotes

Currently building a true RMS to DC converter and having an issue with building a simple full wave rectifier. The circuit is spec for a max of 200mV pp and a DC offset between -3 and 3V. I only have access to two op amps: TL084 and TL974. The TL084 isn’t rail to rail so I chose to use the TL974 for rectification.

Upon building the rectifier, it appears as though there is about a 100mV offset caused by the op amp when there is a DC offset applied at the input. I tried using a potentiometer to fix the offset but only reduced it by about 50mV. This also introduced offset at the input where no DC offset is applied which is detrimental to RMS results for those input waveforms.

It seems like a push and pull between finding a happy medium but what is the best way to go about solving this issue? Attached is a photo of the rectification stage which includes a high impedance input buffer.

Seeking Business Advice Commercializing an Electronic Product

Hi everyone! I’d love some business advice.

My brother is an engineer who designed and successfully prototyped a relatively simple electronic sensor/device. He recently showed it to a U.S. company that is interested in purchasing it.
The company currently buys a similar product from another small vendor, but that vendor sometimes runs out of stock. They are interested in my brother’s product both because he may be able to offer it at a lower cost and because having another supplier would help them maintain inventory and avoid shortages.

The challenge is figuring out the best way to move forward. It appears he may need certifications/compliance testing that could cost around $10K–$20K, and he doesn’t have much capital to invest upfront.
The interested company has also mentioned that they would potentially want him to produce the product exclusively for them.
So we’re trying to understand what would make the most sense:

1) Should he invest in certifications and build a small business selling to multiple companies? (Maybe higher profits for him but also higher risk. what if more companies are not interested)

2) Should he negotiate an exclusive licensing/manufacturing agreement with this company? (Less risk but also maybe less profit for him)

3) Should he sell them the IP outright and let them handle certification/manufacturing?

4) Or is there a better middle-ground arrangement, such as retaining the IP while giving them exclusivity in exchange for minimum purchase commitments or upfront funding?

For anyone with experience commercializing hardware/electronic products, what would you recommend, and what should he be careful about regarding IP, exclusivity, certifications, and upfront costs? We have no business background so we are a bit lost here.

UNIVERSITY Looking for Computer Engineering Professionals for a Quick Interview (school activity)

‎‎‎‎Hello everyone!

‎I'm a 1st year Computer Engineering student in the Philippines working on a final project for one of my courses. As part of our requirements, I am tasked with writing a narrative report and need to interview 3 successful Computer Engineering professionals/graduates who can share a bit about their career journey.

‎If you are a CpE graduate with experience in the field and are willing to spare just 15 minutes of your time, I would be incredibly grateful for your insights :)

The goal is to gather real-world perspectives and experiences for my academic narrative report.

Here are my questions:

  1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and what your current role or specialization is in the computer engineering field?

‎

  1. ‎What inspired you to pursue Computer Engineering, and what was your journey like transitioning from a student to a professional?

‎

  1. ‎Can you share a notable project, challenge, or breakthrough in your career that you are most proud of?

‎

  1. ‎What is one technical or soft skill you wish you had learned or focused on earlier in your college days?

‎

  1. ‎If you could give one piece of advice to an incoming Computer Engineering student today, what would it be?

Please note that all information and insights gathered will be strictly used for academic purposes only and will remain confidential. Additionally, for my professor's verification purposes, we can coordinate via DM for your LinkedIn or a way to confirm your professional background for my report.

‎If you are open to helping a student out, please comment below or send me a direct message 🥲 Thank you so much in advance for your time and guidance! !

CAREER Is a Master’s degree necessary for silicon/AI chip development and board-level electrical engineering?

I’m trying to figure out whether I should eventually get a Master degree. For context, I am a current undergrad student who has the opportunities to finish both undergrad + masters in 4.5 years.

For more context, I’ve worked at one of the major defense companies (Lockheed/Boeing/Northrop) and interned as an SDE at a FAANG company, working specifically on AI chip development.

I’d like to continue working in silicon/AI chip development while also getting into board-level electrical engineering, testing/validation, hardware design, and system integration.

For people in these areas, is a Master’s generally needed or helpful for career progression? Or does industry experience matter more?

My manager at the FAANG company told me his team doesn’t really care about a Master’s and that it wouldn’t affect compensation, but I’m curious whether that’s generally true across the industry.

Would love to hear from people working in silicon, ASIC/AI as accelerators, board-level EE, hardware validation, or system integration.

How to get ahead as a Freshman CompE

I'm a Computer Engineering Freshman at the University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign. I have experience in System Verily, C++, Python and Java. I've also made RISC-V Processor with Branch Prediction, FPGA Matrix-Multiplication Accelerator, and a Workload-Aware Cache & Prefetcher.

I want to know what would a competitive freshman would do. Internships are more for Juniors, so what prestigious program should one do?

CAREER Arm Intern CPU/Systems Hardware Engineer hirevue

Got an email from ARM for the position listed above and wanted to get some more insight on the hirevue process. I’m in my junior year studying in the US, not sure if the interview process differs between countries. But the expected time says 25 minutes, which seems a little bit on the low end if any technical questions were going to be asked. Has anyone recently completed the hirevue for this position give some tips and what to prepare?

UNIVERSITY Is ECE Right For Me?

Hi, I'm currently a high school senior. Throughout high school, I focused on CS: making APPs, doing hackathons, etc. But recently, AI has really been scaring me, and I'm thinking about applying as a different major. I've been thinking about applying as an ECE major for some schools but there's one major issue: I'm really good at math but don't like physics too much. Math comes pretty easily to me, but I honestly struggled with physics quite a bit. If you're familiar with the American system, I barely got a 4 on AP Physics 1. I guess the main issue is that it's not very intuitive for me. Could I still do engineering in college if I'm not the best at physics or should I do a different major? How many physics classes would I have to take?

CAREER Feeling lost, seeking advice

I’m feeling lost in my career. I graduated two years ago and I have only been at my current job for 1.5 years. I’m a test engineer and it’s my only work experience (no prior internships). At my current company, there are no growth opportunities and I want to move into a position where I can get salary raises and grow as an engineer. I look at LinkedIn everyday and all the job posts I see prefer masters degree or 2-3+ years of experience or recent grads. The issue is that at my position, I don’t feel like I do any engineering work. I want to move into a more hardware related role but don’t know where to start. What can I do to make my resume better and be able to get a hardware role? Or what can I do to progress in my career?

CAREER Am I screwed for EE co-ops?

Hey everyone,

I’m a 3rd-year Electrical Engineering student applying for co-ops/internships, and I’m dealing with some serious imposter syndrome.

I have a high GPA , but zero personal projects. I’ve had to work heavy part-time hours in precision manufacturing and machining to pay for school, so any time outside lectures went into shop shifts rather than tinkering at home. My resume only has standard lab coursework and years of manufacturing work experience.

Does hands-on machining/manufacturing experience carry weight for EE roles, or is it viewed as completely irrelevant OR Should I scramble to build a quick personal hardware project right now?

Appreciate the honest opinion.

INDUSTRY Credentialslism and licensing, have you encountered them?

I've lived most of my life in Latin America, and put up with an unrelated degree that was chosen by a cult. After that, I moved on and went straight into hardware as it's something that I've been passionate about for ages and the cult that my parents joined could not erase.

However, credentialslism has been a thing that I've had to deal with. Many countries in the region can get annoying about licensing as well, some companies will even ask for a license even for jobs that legally don't require them, etc...

Guess that I could put up with a bunch of university classes that I can teach, but I have no desire to deal with that system anymore.

Oh, well. How are things in your corner of the world? Is competence enough where you live? Or is keeping the bureaucrats happy more important than understanding transmission lines?
