question What does this say to you?

Post image

Just completed and it has a distinct meaning for me, but I’m curious if it translates for others.

Edit with context:
I am 9 months sober and will separately be in a lifetime of recovery from an eating disorder, an addiction if it’s own. For me, this was meant to say a few things:

- Longing for the simplicity of childhood when all I was “addicted to” was ice cream on a hot summer day.

- Food sabotage during my worst days of ED where I’d, metaphorically, rather melt and destroy the food rather than consume it.

- Sugar/food is a crutch or other kind of addiction. I’ve leaned hard on eating through these 9 months of sobriety. This is doubly hard as someone with a history of ED.

The wacky proportions add a sense of whimsy that recalls childhood and the distortion that addiction brings.

The pops of color, while also adding some whimsy, bring life to the piece in the same way a vice enlivens an addict.

The veiny/wrinkled hand is devoid of that same life, and displays a kind of tension/desperation in its texture and grip.

The darkness represents the shame of addiction, including ED. The only light comes from the lighter which enables the addiction.

Thank you all for reflecting!

question Can we limit the horny posts?

2.7k Upvotes

Mods please keep this up because I would truly just like to hopefully inspire other women in subs like this one and r/illustration to speak up.

I have searched and I'm just looking for solidarity.

Caveat: I'm not saying this is every single post or a vast majority or them. I just want to know if anyone else has noticed them being posted more and more.

This is a sub about drawing, which is such a broad domain of art, and yet I see so many scantily clad women being posted.

I'm so tired! It feels so awful as a woman and an artist to see a sub about art, where we should be seeing anything and everything as subjects, focus on the male gaze.

Can we limit the number breasted boobily posts as a rule or something? Can there be a separate sub?

I want to see a variety of beautiful art again instead of seeing a reminder every day that women's bodies are just for men to obsess over.

EDIT: I'd like to add I think that being part of many mainstream art subreddits like r/Illustration as well heightened this effect for me. A lot of you went searching this sub for examples and didn't find many, but I think this means it's a pattern that becomes more noticeable when you look at a large scope of similar general art-related subs.

question Help me learn this color technique?

How do artists create this hyper‑colorful style where the colors aren’t realistic but the form and shading still look real? I’ve always drawn and painted with more realistic colors but the layered, expressive stuff always catches my eye. How do you choose and layer colors you don’t actually see in the subject and still make it work? I’m baffled.

question I ve been trying to draw some eyes for the last 2 hours but nothing seem to fit. I’m a beginner artist so my drawing is not the best and it’s obviously not finished. Can someone try and draw them so i can see what does and does not fit?

question Is this too embarrassing/ not good enough to give as a gift? I rarely draw and I don’t know if I want to give this. It’s a drawing of the recipient’s cats.

My friend has never been interested in drawing, and we've never discussed it. He recently encountered some psychological problems in his life and decided to draw something for the first time. He sent me his first drawings. He says he came up with them himself. I think he has a talent that can and should be developed. What do you think?

question should i choose art?

Post image

this is the last drawing i made. it was one year ago, i was 16 years old. i gave up on art school, and decided to do science since i love animals and nature. i’m rethinking my choices, since i used to love art so much. i’ve been drawing since young. do you think i’m good enough for art uni? i felt so insecure about my art, i decided to completely abandon that hobby. is it possible to do biology, and then later do art? i really don’t know what to choose.
