People saying slow reaction on brakes are crazy. Like how would blue truck drivers assume the other truck is gonna actually turn in front and not just start rolling to go behind blue truck. Do yall even drive?
167
u/RicketCrickets 11h ago
You kidding? Two-thirds of this sub don't even leave their mom's basement.
22
u/P0tat0_Carl 11h ago
Damn when put that way I guess they dont drive lol. I live in socal, theres bad drivers everywhere, but entitled drivers are concentrated down here, and even i wouldnt assume someone is gonna turn out in front of my like this.
2
u/Theboiii24 11h ago
We got used to seeing negative iq drivers hence we now have more defensive driving.
6
u/P0tat0_Carl 11h ago
I pause for a second when the light turns green, because about 40% of the time down here someone will come blazing thru the red and run it, especially by the colleges down here. I do drive defensively. But even I wouldnt assume this truck would make this turn in front of me

u/appa-ate-momo 9h ago
They expect people to grind the roads to a halt by treating every uncontrolled intersection like a 4-way stop—right of way be damned—just in case someone does something like this.
They utterly refuse to accept that driving is a compromise between safety and efficiency.
5
u/solitudechirs 9h ago
Similarly: the people that say they wait multiple seconds when a light turns green to make sure it’s clear both ways.
1
u/P0tat0_Carl 7h ago
When you live in socal, you sorta need to wait at least a second. The amount of red lights ran down here is around 30-40% without exaggeration
2
u/SmootherWorm 5h ago
I’ve seen the 3-4 people run the light in a row in LA. If I might hit someone that’s clearly not going to stop for the red, I’ll wait. But the right time to assess if the intersection is clear is the seconds leading up to my light turning green.

u/high_throughput 1h ago
I was actually impressed by cam's braking.
I came in here intending to make shitty jokes like "what's that thing cam is doing where they rapidly reduce speed when they see an accident is about to happen? Haven't seen that on this sub before"
1
u/poemglow 3h ago
pulling across another lane like that wihtout making sure it's clear is a wild gamble
1
u/GregorSamsaa 11h ago
In a different post I mentioned how I hate rollers and will slow down if someone starts rolling because I don’t know whether you’re trying to get your momentum to go behind me or if you’re about to dart out in front of me like an idiot.
My opinion is just stand still and start moving once I’ve gone by. You’re saving zero time and if you’re trying to beat other oncoming cars then you’re a problem.
Everyone gave me shit about it that me slowing down is unpredictable driving and I shouldn’t take someone starting to roll as a reason to slow down but this video proves exactly why you can never trust someone that starts moving in your direction.
5
u/P0tat0_Carl 10h ago
Even if the blue truck slowed down when we first saw the other truck start rolling, there was not enough time or space to actually stop to avoid contact either way. Idk about the other post you mentioned, but for this specific one it wouldnt have made a difference. Trucks are heavy, and once you get them rolling they dont just stop on a dime

u/Pillslanger 8h ago
Doesn’t even seem cam driver tried to brake. Majority fault on truck but not 100% They cleared most of cam’s lane and were struck on rear QP. Better braking from cam and loss is avoided entirely. If I was this was on my desk I’m thinking 70-80% on truck.
For anyone saying “how were they to know they would turn?” Has clearly not been taught defensive driving.
4
u/IudexJudy 7h ago
Do you think that a car can stop instantly, they're obviously driving a truck and had about 2-3 seconds to react before collision, please show me a truck that has a stopping distance if less than 60 feet from 45
-5
u/Pillslanger 7h ago
A full stop isn’t needed, another second is. I’ve read hundreds of police reports and settled thousands of car accidents. Both drivers definitely getting ticketed here. Failure to keep a proper lookout and failure to take proper evasive action for cam.
You can believe otherwise but facts are facts
-22
u/Theboiii24 11h ago
Prob brakes and tires are ass. Which means why having good maintenance on your car is good. Trust me you don’t want to deal with the hassle of insurance. Even when you are not at fault. Well let this be a lesson while defensive driving and good maintenance are worth their weight in gold. I know I’m not blaming blue truck. But once he sees the hassle of what he now faces it would have been easier to have goo maintenance in the car. Assuming. He wasn’t towing something which if he was then my bad dude it’s understandable
9
u/P0tat0_Carl 11h ago
Bro trucks are heavy in general. Ive owned a lightweight sport car, a muscle car with a hemi, and now a 4runner. And I can tell you brakes act differently depending on ride weight. Trying to say this couldve been avoided with proper maintenance is asinine
-12
u/Theboiii24 11h ago
I agree they are like boats. So if he had good maintenance then he is all good. I’m saying it cause the hassle having an accident is not worth it if you can prevent it. Even if you are not at fault.
8
u/P0tat0_Carl 11h ago
He slammed on the brakes and tried to prevent it. What more could he have done, honestly?
0
u/Theboiii24 11h ago
From 35 mph to slamming on the brakes. I’m not a mechanic but now looking at it a second time and seeing the distance he had to stop while the speed he had. Also the truck is heavy hence more distance while stopping. I don’t think he had a chance to do stop on time.
Wow the difference it can make while looking at it for a second or third time.
The truck(negative iq one) got in the intersection when the driver ( dash cam ) was too late to stop complete on time.
Yep I go from truck (dash cam) had a chance to stop to maybe not at all. Op you did what you could. The other guy is completely on the wrong.
1
u/P0tat0_Carl 11h ago
Dude I love that you took another watch and reconsidered. Thats big of you, and doesn't happen often these days. Good on you bro!
-24
u/Silly_Yak56012 11h ago edited 11h ago
Well I have had it explained to me on some sub reddits that I should show absolutely not one nanogram of caution at interesections. Put on the blinders and speed up a bit. Do not look to see what other traffic is doing and NEVER let up on the accelerator, or even have a single thought about touching the brake pedal if you accidently see something in your peripheral vision.
So cam car is just following the collective wisdom of reddit, or something. After all the most dangerous driving on the road is defensive driving. It is always the defensive driver that causes all problems. Everyone should always plow into whatever dares to get in front of you at full speed. How will other drivers learn to get out of your way if you don't hit them for every trangression.
That being said, I do my best to avoid hitting whatever nonsense is happening in front of me. I would rather tack one minute onto my drive from that then add many many minutes dealing with an accident.
15
u/P0tat0_Carl 11h ago edited 11h ago
So his best option here would be slamming on the brakes (this is the only way he would've stopped in time either way) and cause someone to potentially rear end him on the offchance the truck driver is stupid enough to turn in front? Genuinely you think that's the solution here? And slamming on the brakes would simply "add one minute to their drive time". Bruh
-5
u/Theboiii24 11h ago
Hence always be aware of your surroundings your speed and who is behind you. Specially at intersections cause drivers speed there sometimes. Yes I know it’s a lot. However is that or risk the chance of an idiot hitting you cause if he had no one behind him for like a good amount of time and someone hits him is their fault not the guy who slammed the breaks to stop from hitting an idiot. Verify with a professional attorney or something cause if you can prevent it do it. Else insurance may go 50 50 on this
8
u/P0tat0_Carl 11h ago
The blue truck driver slammed on his brakes and did everything he could to avoid contact. Watch with sound. Theres no amount of stopping early that could've avoided contact bro
-9
u/Silly_Yak56012 11h ago
Dude behind me should be following at the proper distance. I know that is unacceptable was well. And most likely slamming into the car in front of me and coming to an abrupt stop from that is going to get me rear ended as well.
AVOIDING the accident may slow me for a moment, getting IN an accident will take more than one minute
8
-15
u/laivasika 11h ago

Are you for real? if you’re being sarcastic let us know with /s otherwise this is some serious r/shitposting
1
u/Silly_Yak56012 10h ago
Somewhat sarcastic, but even the very reasonable move your foot so it is near the break has been something I have been YELLED at on Reddit as unacceptable.
Maybe they were all shitposting, but it is kinda scary how many people seem to think the only driving that should be allowed is very aggressive driving and it is the sensible people who are causing whatever accidentes aggressive driviers get into.
Like the "joke" that no matter how reasonable the cam car's actions were the cam car driver caused the accident.
4
u/Designer_Vast_9089 11h ago
Defense driving- I don’t think that word means what you think it means.
-9
u/Silly_Yak56012 10h ago
Based on what people way on this app respond to what I call defensive driving I am the only problem on the road. So any awareness of what other people are doing around me, leaving enough space to take appropriate or evasive action, even daring to spot dangrous drivers and avoid them is all bad and wrong.
I mean even here, better to slam into the person making the turn when they shouldn't have than brake hard because someone might rear end me if I dare to try and stop before slammming into him.
7
u/amltecrec 10h ago
You worry about what's in FRONT of you, not behind you! That is on THEM!
-2
u/Silly_Yak56012 10h ago
I AGREE, but I was told slaming on my breaks in this situation would get me rear ended and it would be MY fault.
1
u/amltecrec 10h ago
That's the most asinine thing ever read! You will be a danger on the road, when you stop driving in GTA! Also, even emergency vehicles driving Code 3, or Priority 1, whatever, saves relatively such little time, that it most often isn't worth the additional safety risk. Defensive driving will absolutely NOT delay your self-entitled travel to your destination.
-4
u/Silly_Yak56012 9h ago
Sometimes defensive driving is taking a turn/exit and going around the block, or get a coffee before getting back on my way, or even slowing down so I have a few extra car lengths between me and the person ahead I can't trust.
It is funny, any other subreddit or post whenever I agree with doing anything sensible or reasonable gets me yelled at and told I shouldn't drive if I worry about avoiding accidents.
Maybe they are "joking" but some people seem pretty upset that anyone would avoid accidents. Maybe they get pissed off when they don't have someone to rage at while driving?
38
u/appa-ate-momo 9h ago
Gotta love how predictable the comments will be on a video like this. People are falling over themselves to shift responsibility to the person who was hit by an illegal maneuver from the one who caused the danger in the first place.
Do these people just want to argue? Or do they genuinely not understand that it's unreasonable to constantly be crawling along, slowing down for every single potential danger before they present themselves?
10
u/EffectMotor8914 5h ago
Should have seen the thread where this exact thing happened to a motorcyclist traveling at the speed limit. The truck pulled out to make a uturn when there wasnt space and stopped in the lane of travel, blocking the motorcyclist. They got into a little shouting match about it after the motorcyclist gave his bumper a tap to let him know he was there and the roid rage driver got out and had a meltdown. Half the comments were blaming the motorcyclist.

-56
u/OldManWarner_ 12h ago
Part of being an experienced and good driver is actually being able to see the big picture and in some cases even be able to predict what other drivers might do. That comes from experience. And that’s what makes new drivers so dangerous. They haven’t been on the road long enough to have a good idea of how other drivers could behave in certain situations. Any good, experienced driver in this instance would have had their foot hovering the brake in case the truck pulled a maneuver like that.
37
u/RedHeeded 12h ago
You take your foot off the gas and hover over the break at every intersection and every time u see a car waiting to move on or off the main road?

u/Kindly-Wind2711 11h ago
Cam driver slammed on her brakes
-18
u/RickeyDourst 11h ago
Not really slammed imo but they did brake yes. We’re just saying we think had the cammer’s reaction time been a bit better things may have been different. But again, no one’s arguing that the truck is not at fault and hindsight is 20/20 ofc
-16

You’re 100% right, I don’t know why you’re getting down voted. Seems like you work for UPS lol

u/Theboiii24 11h ago
Not his fault but when ever he can from now on defensive driving slowing down a bit on intersections and having breaks / tires would help him more than the hassle of repairs , insurance etc.I’m not being a jerk just because. It fucking is a hassle to deal with all of that and if the insurance adjuster can push back they will. Stop trying to dramatize shit.

u/justadude27 11h ago
First of all, that is not even an intersection.
Second of all, cam car has right of way. No arguments or ambiguity with that.

Normally I would say “defensive driving” would have helped here, but I’m pretty sure there was not going to be a defensive avoidance of this one.

Maybe they could have reduced the severity of the impact by steering left, but complete avoidance would have been impressive.

u/turbo-fister9000 10h ago
Average human reaction time is 1.5 seconds. The distance to fully stop at 40mph is about 60 feet. 60 ft plus the time the car travelled during the 1.5 seconds is about 150 feet. The turning truck to me looks about 30 max feet away.
5
u/IudexJudy 7h ago
60ft stopping distance is insane especially for a truck, the averages I'm seeing are around 80-100 ft
2
u/OKRickety 5h ago
"Response" time, that is, Perception Time [0.5 to 1.75 seconds] + Reaction/Movement Time [0.2 to 0.75 seconds], for a vehicle driver is 1.5 seconds on average for unexpected roadway events. This was definitely unexpected no matter how defensively one drives.

The guy did brake. In less than a second after the car started turning. There's just obvious lag because he didn't expect someone to pull out in front of him.
What I really don't understand the people like you that watch dashcam videos that 1) can't even get the facts of the video straight and 2) try and act like they have complete clairvoyancy and superhuman reactions because they are already primed to expect an accident.
-30
u/Ahoytherematey561 12h ago
At that point, it’s not even a reaction. It’s an instinct. You see someone pulling out in front of you and you hit the brakes. This driver didn’t hit them at all. Show me where he did. When you break your hood drops down. That never happened. I don’t understand people like you who want to take the opposite position and just get into arguments. It’s very clear from that video that this driver made no attempt to brake. Maybe he was looking down and distracted. But you show me where he hit the brakes, or stop playing devil’s advocate, and stay out of it.
4
u/KitnBlit 11h ago
What are you talking about? You can see the hood dip and you can hear the skid on the audio. He absolutely braked. As if it even mattered, the guy gave him no time to avoid the collision.
3
u/Korendir72 11h ago
What video are you watching? The hood clearly dips just before impact. As the view of the solid white line on the left disappears the hood dips. Look at the reflections on the hood and you can see where they change because the driver hit the brakes.
3
u/Suzuki_Foster 11h ago
The cam vehicle's hood very perceptably dips right before the impact. The driver absolutely did hit their brakes.
This collision is 100% the fault of the other idiot who turned into incoming traffic.
5
u/utzutzutzpro 11h ago
It's been less than 2 seconds from the truck going full g force turn into the left and the impact.
Braking, even if would have occured, wouldn't have changed much here anyways. You can btw hear how he attempts to brake...

going 35 mph, at least 3 car lengths when that moran started to make his left turn
maybe the cammer was driving a uhaul so 3 car lengths at 35 mph wasn't enough.
-14
u/Ahoytherematey561 12h ago
That’s not what I’m saying. In fact, there was no way the driver with the dash cam could’ve avoided the accident completely. It was too close. But that driver made absolutely no attempt to even brake. You don’t see the hood go up or down at all, so there was no braking.
-1
u/Quick-Road943 11h ago
yea probably too hard to avoid esp if they weren't super paranoid about that left turner.
Honestly I probably would not have been able to stop in time.... but i'm at home in my armchair, so I will say I would gotten away w/o incident lol.
0
u/Mainbutter 4h ago
Cam car looked like they were going a very reasonable speed, even slowing a tad as they passed the left turn lane. They also applied brakes before the crash - but they didn't brake HARD. The oncoming truck gave them really very little time to react.

He had a slow reaction but he clearly slowed down before the impact. You can hear the tires when listening with sound and see the truck’s momentum shift. The dashcam speed is delayed.
3
u/Sidewaysgts 11h ago
Rewatching this frame by frame, we see his nose dive .6 of a second after it’s visibly clear the car in front of him is turning (and I mean tbe moment this wheels are turned and the vehicle starts to go) from hitting the brakes. Mind you it also takes a fraction of a second for a car to physically respond to hitting the brakes like this- so he’s actually off the pedal and on the brakes less than this- but let’s do .6 of a second for good measure.
How is that a “slow reaction”?
4
u/Badbullet 12h ago
I wouldn’t say that is a slow reaction time at all. Most people would expect the truck is just pulling forward getting ready to go and not need to slam on the brakes. You can hear the feet switch pedals as that truck gets to the white line on the shoulder. I don’t think 90% of drivers would have done any better.

u/Sidewaysgts 11h ago
From the moment the car starts to clearly turn, until the accident, is 1.5 seconds.
The guy is reacting .6 of a second after it’s clear the car is turning in front of them (and this is a frame by frame break down, and being as “generous” as possible against the cam car. That’s from the moment the car is clearly turning, to the moment we see the camera cars nose dive. Adding in time for a car to physically react to stomping on the brakes, they’re actually reacting sooner - but let’s give them the longer time for good measure)
How much faster did you want them to react? Keeping in mind even if they’d reacted instantly, they’re still not avoiding that accident- but please let us know how much faster you feel they should’ve reacted
