When my brother tried to explain how we (as pedestrians) had the right of way, I said "we may win the laws of the road, the car wins the laws of physics."
I think commenter meant that the person merging recklessly there has no insurance or assets, so the cyclists family get nothing and he died for no reason other than that he wanted the right of way
I don't think the coroner is the one who drives out and scrapes you up off the asphalt lol, they just pronounce you dead if you weren't hauled to a hospital first
This is what I keep telling my kids when I teach them how to cross a street. Even if a car has a stop sign and it is your turn to cross, the fact you had right of way will not make the doctor being able to magically heal you. Make sure the car sees you and is actually stopping before crossing.
In my town that death wish mindset has been passed on to their children. Children constantly jaywalking and daring you to hit them so they can get paid.
A friend of ours would stride into the street without pausing (regardless of the traffic), because she has right of way and the cars don't. She was in her 30s at the time. I tried to tell her it didn't matter who was right, what matters is who survives. Thankfully she slowed down a bit because we have kids and we're trying to teach them to be cautious.
Just had this experience recently. Hit the crosswalk button and my light turned green to walk. I always watch traffic that is coming into the crosswalk as I walk. I seen one suv that was going pretty fast to be able to stop at the red light so I just stopped walking. They slammed on their brakes when they either saw me or that they were driving into a red light. The suv stopped a few feet past the end of the crosswalk and sitting in the driver seat was an old women, probably 90 yrs old
IMO that's the whole point of a motorcycle. They're agile and quick. He could've easily zipped ahead or dropped behind. That kinda stuff is half the fun for me.
Yeah people are so determined to be right on principle and get their video they forget that life changing injuries don’t care if you have it on video or we’re fundamentally right.
Also “she tried to run me off the road” and what he captured on video are a little different. I am sure the cop is gonna see the video and be like “ok… this is a little different”
If the other car's front bumper is ahead of mine, I'm not relying on custom or some paragraph deep in the legal code to prevent an accident. I'm letting the other vehicle in.
It drives me crazy when someone passes me, then slows down and suddenly we're matching speed and I'm in their blindspot. I always slow down to let them get ahead a bit. Only takes taking the foot off the gas for a few seconds.
People have the memory of a goldfish and forget they just passed me and put me in their blindspot. Only to just change lanes.
Is any of this my fault, especially when I've had cruise control on? No. Can I avoid a potential collision by slowing down for a few seconds? Yes.
Holy fuck same. I use cruise control basically every moment that I can. The amount of people that speed past me just to slow down right in front of me is mind boggling. I always feel arrogant for thinking it but some people really are just NPCs going about their day with no self awareness.
And now what about the people you are talking about?
Do you think 0%, 100%, or somewhere in between are using their radar cruise control and that is why they slow down when they pass you since now they are a certain distance from the next car up?
I think radar cruise control is a large reason that this behavior seems to be more common than a decade+ ago.
I'm sure that could be some of it, but this happens to me on open roads as well. There won't be other cars around me for a mile and someone will still manage to pull up right next to me.
To be honest, the biker looked like he had a bit of a Karen in him as well... otherwise, like you said, he would have played defensively and not throw a tantrum at the Karen driver...
As the saying goes... the cemetery is full of people who had the right of way...
Also depending on your jurisdiction, merging is 50/50 responsibility. Where I'm at if I see someone try to merge and do what this guy did I'd be as liable as she is
Yeah, I mean, this should apply to everyone on the road, but even more to motorcyclists. People just need to let go of their egos on the road. If you get in an accident, I promise you the knowledge that you were in the right isn't going to do jack shit to reduce your stress or protect you from injury or death.
It's crazy how it takes multiple honks for people to even bother looking up from their phones, let alone stop merging into you while you're running out of lane to dodge into...
I am surprised everyday when I see videos like this and motorcyclists fighting with full size vehicle driver. I'm not fighting them. I'm not confronting them. I might be right but they might dedicated to make be dead wrong.
As someone who once had my dash cam suddenly die on me one day, I wouldn't even be so confident I had video. Granted, after this I got front and rear cameras (separate devices, not a combined unit) to make sure I always had something.
I'm just not sure I'd have the confidence to say "I have it all on video!" Without actually having the time to review said video first.
even if the whole thing was recorded and irrefutable, why is the motorcycle guy playing fire with fire? if a collision happens, the biker loses every single time
Bingo. Your rights don't beat physics. The road is full of assholes driving or riding whatever. Avoid them. Don't pit your bike against a car to make a social point.
As a human being I'm not getting the slightest bit perturbed by this happening to me. Moto guy acts like he's been reading all about driving and this is his first time out there for real.
There is a certain class of people among my fellow motorcyclists (and this rider is one of them) who are just assholes.
They think they can play chicken with other vehicles and you know what ultimately happens to them? They wind up seriously injured or worse. And over what? Something like this?
Like, dude, let her in. You dont want to be behind the box truck anyway as a motorcycle. Way too unsafe and difficult to see around. So why are you being a dick?
Yes and he went straight in on the woman. Sure she was in the wrong but using repeated F-words at a driver was just trying to provoke a response.
He could have had a pleasant conversation, not full out rage spill. A "oh watch how you go, you nearly hit me! Drive better next time!" Rather than "You can't Merge!!!!"
Even a driver in a car or truck should've let this person merge in. She was accelerating to merge in, and he accelerated to block her. I'm not saying slow down to let them merge, but that is smart defensive driving. I'm just saying that she was accelerating to merge in, and that's fine. He should've just not accelerated too and things would've been good.
Aggressively not allowing people to merge while on a bike is some seriously deranged ego shit.
Me too. You see it coming and accept it, let off the gas a bit, let her in, and you get to smile all the way home in one piece. People aren't going to be perfect and I've accepted that before my kickstand is up.

As a motorcyclist I’m slowing down and driving defensively. This dude has way too much confidence in his camera.
