Recommendations quiet(er) clubs?

between my newborn and my job, i love spending a quiet, solitary hour to myself with a pint and just my thoughts every now and then. just sat down at the labor club in belco and i can see 5 screens, hear 4 of them, and its all undercut with the current of pokie machine noise. Not relaxing at all really.

are there any clubs in canberra that arent dominated with screens, betting, and pokies?

This probably went unnoticed unless you were still playing there, but Kaleen Indoor Sports closed on Friday after decades of giving the northside a community space for netball, trisports, indoor soccer and more. It was...not in the best state (the entry in particular was so water-damaged you could smell the mould even on a dry day), and hadn't been for quite some time, but still; I'd been playing some form of sport there for around 20 years, and it was sad to see it go. Sadder still to realise that its closure now leaves North Canberra without an equivalent centre; the only others like it in Canberra are in Weston and Kambah respectively.

Events Littering / Rubbish thrown out of cars

Came to vent and seek answers on how to deal with litterbugs.

Attended nighfest at floriade this evening and on the way out of the carpark a fellow with family in his car threw 3 empty plastic cups from his stationary car door onto the road.

A woman walking past gave him a mouthful and I also stopped my car and gestured to him that he should pickup his litter. He sped off in a hurry.

The sheer arrogance to think that it is ok to litter like this makes my blood boil. I wish I could've picked it up and passed it back through his window. Had my kids with me so it turned into a conversation on the way home.

The controversial part: I think people not raised and educated in australia seem more likely to engage in polluting in this manner, perhaps not understanding that their trash can harm wildlife, and creat problems for other people in the city. I could be wrong on that.

How do people deal with blatant and obnoxious littering like this? Can I report his number plate anywhere? Would anything come of it? Probably not sadly....

edit - im pro migration / multi culturalism. apologies for coming across otherwise, though may have been naive to add that part in my post. Genuinely seeking a method of reporting ppl who litter from cars.

Loud Bang meteor?

was just feeding my fish and saw a perfectly spherical, bright white “something” fall rapidly over the hill. i was facing south east, and this was at 8:00/8:01.

was slower and larger than a shooting star, and didn’t light up anything as it went down, as meteors sometimes do. had no visible trail either.

anyone else see this? or am i imagining things? (or aliens)

Recommendations Hot water system replacement

Hi all, my old hot water system has packed it in (on a public holiday of course 😒) and need a new one reasonably urgently, but I don't want to get ripped off.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good local plumbers that will do a quick hot water systems replacement?

Hi everyone!

Would anyone be willing to share some photos of the lightning storm from last night? My daughter is 9 and we were watching it last night, and she was so excited saying "this is my favourite type of science!"

Unfortunately my phone couldn't capture the magic, so just wondering if anyone with more photo talent managed to capture some good photos to show her.

Thanks! 😊

News Capital Football SAP changes for 2027

Canberra Times - 30 September 2026

The winter soccer season might have just finished, but now attention turns to 2027, with two clubs that struggled for numbers set to be thrown a lifeline, and a proposed change to a key talent pathway sparking debate.

Last week Canberra's top clubs were sent the provisional declaration of leagues, which was the first look at what Capital Football have planned for next season.

For clubs set to compete in top-level National Premier League competitions, it's the penultimate step before the final green light to ramp up preparations for the upcoming season, including conducting trials from October 13.

BellaMonaro and Majura FC faced hurdles earlier this year, with each club suddenly withdrawing from NPL competitions mid-season. But both have been backed by Capital Football to return in 2027.

BellaMonaro withdrew its NPL girls under-16s team in April due to player numbers being impacted by "injuries, withdrawals and delayed returns", and Majura FC withdrew its boys under-16s and under-18s teams because of player numbers and welfare concerns.

Despite this, in August, Capital Football issued a statement that the board was satisfied both clubs made enough improvements to address their issues. This paved the way for BellaMonaro and Majura FC to be retained in the same NPL competitions next year, as proposed in the provisional declaration of leagues released last week.

Another one of the declaration's surprising points were changes to the Skills Acquisition Program (SAP), which is available for talented young male and female players seeking a high-performance pathway.

Capital Football plans to expand SAP to now include an under-11 age division, in addition to the existing under-12 and under-13 competitions, giving skilled younger players greater opportunity to develop.

But the expansion appears to come at a cost, with clubs told by Capital Football they can no longer field more than one SAP girls and one opens team per age group, "to maximise participation across clubs and make the best use of available field space".

"Field availability and suitable facility capacity remain limited," Capital Football explained.

The change would make SAP spots more limited at clubs that currently field more than one team, and could mean some players miss out on making the cut, forcing them to move to another club.

Trials for SAP girls and opens, NPL women, men, girls and boys, and Junior League girls and opens division one can start from October 13, while the Community League trials don't start until February 1, 2027.

It's an earlier date than Capital Football originally had planned for NPL trials, to allow clubs further time to lock in their teams for 2027.

But the sporting body warned that if clubs conducted NPL trials before this permitted date, they could face sanctions.

Once Capital Football confirm their review of the clubs' NPL licensing and eligibility in the coming weeks, and hear club feedback, the declaration of leagues for 2027 will be confirmed and released publicly.

There isn't expected to be any further information provided on 2028's slated return of promotion and relegation until early next year.
Promotion and relegation was frozen for 2026 and 2027after the collapse of one of the biggest clubs in Canberra, Gungahlin United, in November 2025. Capital Football cited the need for greater stability and certaintyafter Gungahlin's withdrawal.

The northside club's closure and the subsequent widespread impact on competitions came in the aftermath of the NPL review finalised in early 2025 which was also a significant shake-up of the Canberra soccer landscape.

"Final details regarding competition structures and arrangements, including relevant competition rules, draw structures and promotion and relegation provisions, will be communicated to clubs in early 2027," Capital Football said in its provisional declaration.

Recommendations Bussing to Canberra from Queanbeyan Jerrabomberra Googong and surrounds

Hi

Just wanted to get a general gist to how people feel about this.

I just find it really annoying how little (Jerrabomberran here) public transport is offered to Canberra.

I would 1 million billion percent take it everyday and on my days off to do stuff buy stuff etc. Economic benefits to Canberra. But I don't really anymore or often.

All you see every morning is the same thousands of cars trudge into Canberra. I hate driving cause you are putting your life in other people's hands and things go wrong. The bus (maybe it's me) just feels safer. When I lived in Canberra, I loved bussing everywhere. Go to Woden, go to Belco, go to Tuggers...etc.

I legitimately want to consult local governments to increase, but I feel like it will fall on deaf ears.

Does anyone else feel the same. Or would like going into NSW to be easier.

I feel like Queanbeyan and surrounds are genuinely just Canberra but not technically

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED How well are (ACT) Proof of Identity Card received?

Given I don't drive, I decided not to renew my licence

I know that on online platforms photo cards are almost never accepted, but I do have a passport so I can use that for online e-KYC

For day-to-day stuff like proving your identity at the bank, buying alcohol, picking up stuff from the post office, how well accepted is the Proof of ID card?

I guess it's less well received interstate, but given the $500 / 10 year price tag vs $9 indefinitely, I am willing to carry my passport when I travel interstate

Recommendations Kids shoe stores Canberra

Hi all, I have a 7 year old with difficult to fit feet. We've got runners down pat, but I've been trying to find her some simple low cost sandles/canvas, and going to department stores and Payless shoes isn't working. She has wide front and narrow heel, and I realise I'm going to have to pay more than I wanted.

Does anyone know a physical shoe store in Canberra that stocks enough of a variety of shoes, and people that can help fit, that where we might have a chance of sorting this out?

I'm also happy to hear recommendations for online, but would prefer to take her somewhere.

Loud Bang Current tactile strips for the blind are outright dangerous in the wet

With the rain today I went for a walk and coffee through Braddon and saw 8 people slip on the newish tactile strips on Mort St, Elloura St & Lonsdale St.

Luckily all caught themselves, but the current white ones being installed are far more slippery in the wet than the older yellow ones. It’s outright dangerous.

I’d say these white ones are even more slippery than the old metal ones.

Is nothing tested anymore? They just find the cheapest compliant by bid and install garbage everywhere?

Loud Bang Now the Card Surcharge ban is in, I wonder how many EPIC market stalls will abide by it.

As most of us now know it just became illegal for merchants to add an additional percentage to their prices at the checkout if paying by card. Pre COVID the overwhelming majority of sellers at the EPIC market were cash only. Covid changed that and they all started adding a 2% (ish) surcharge for card payments. But now that’s illegal I wonder what’s going to happen. Will they simply require cash again like they used to (quite inconvenient and forces people to use the local ATMs which charge around $5 for the privilege), add a few cents to their prices and price it in, as a lot of cents to their prices and claim it’s because of the government, or simply keep charging the extra and flaunt the law.

I’m guessing they’ll factor in the 2% increase with a 15% price hike and still blame the government.
