this was a pretty silly event to even consider hosting

261

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

Yeah the choice of date is not coming from a pacifist mindset.

-180

u/AppropriateNewt 1d ago

We should be pacifists… regarding genocide?

133

u/YanicPolitik 1d ago

Oct 7 is the anniversary of the genocidal massacre that began this conflict. The clearest acts of genocide of this entire conflict

-110

u/jamzzz 1d ago

Do you seriously believe the "conflict" began on October 7?

•

u/Comfortable_Ad5144 10h ago

No one is disagreeing with that but having a celebration of a terror attack is fucking mental.

•

u/Bad_Alternative 8h ago

Over 100 people have disregarded that as far as I’m seeing.

•

u/goodfleance 7h ago

Massacre and invasion is not genocide. Let's stick to reality here.

•

u/YanicPolitik 7h ago

that's because it was stopped

•

u/goodfleance 7h ago

What needs to be stopped now is the actual, literal genocide currently being committed by Israel.

•

u/YanicPolitik 7h ago

I thought we were trying to stick to reality here?

•

u/goodfleance 7h ago

Yes, by every objective metric and definition, Israel is committing genocide against Palestine right now. That is reality.

That doesn't defend or forgive the attack on October 7th, which was horrific and terrible.

Both are true, even if it makes your favourite team look bad. Hope this helps

57

u/kaiserschlacht8 1d ago

Silly is one way of putting it lol

92

u/fieldofcabins 1d ago

Let me guess, it’s Samidoun again

53

u/kivvi 1d ago

Always. Just under 10 different shell organization titles now.

•

u/have2gopee 5h ago

UTGSU included?

•

u/kivvi 3h ago

Not directly, but probably indirectly. Unions are a shitshow for this, especially student ones.

517

u/greeneggo 1d ago

Anyone who uses the word “martyrs” seriously should be ignored

190

u/ArtDan4Eva 1d ago

Or put on some kind of list.

71

u/DoingItJust 1d ago

All the lists

40

u/troubledtimez 1d ago

This. It is an obvious sign

116

u/morningcalm999 1d ago

The terrorist sympathisers glamourize death and act like its a virtue, call them what they are: a death cult.

19

u/Total-Translator438 1d ago

Should be reported damn

13

u/Hopeful_Relation_441 1d ago

should have let it happen..... then police could use face id to record everyone who attends

But they're not martyrs, they're heroes. It's Heroyam Slava.

3

u/Smee76 1d ago

What a weird way to say that

-131

u/ChickenShampoo 1d ago

It's used by Muslims to indicate anyone who died for their faith. The innocent women and children killed by the IDF would also be considered martyrs.

130

u/Acolyte2TheDude 1d ago

Well of course they're considered martyrs, they're being deliberately used as cannon fodder to protect Hamas operations by their own leaders. Hamas is on record saying so in this very conflict.

-76

u/ChickenShampoo 1d ago

They are still innocent and non-deserving of Israel's war crimes.

114

u/Acolyte2TheDude 1d ago

It's actually war crimes by Hamas to put them deliberately in harm's way.

-30

u/Top-Shoulder-1086 1d ago

Yes. All these people being attacked and killed in the West Bank by settlers, have sure been put in harms way by Hamas. You know, for existing.

34

u/Acolyte2TheDude 1d ago

Well we were talking about deaths from the IDF. The West Bank is a mess and there are lots of Israeli settlers that ought to be in jail.

-17

u/Top-Shoulder-1086 1d ago

Just Settlers huh? Over 1200 Palestinians have died in the West Bank and Eastern Jersualem since the original Hamas attack 3 years ago. "Only" 300 or so have been killed by Settlers. Who killed the other 900?

•

u/Top-Shoulder-1086 7h ago

Well, all the Zionists found my comments. And nothing I said was untrue.

You will notice your war crimes comments got 111 likes, but the settlers should be in jail only got 34. I wonder white?

-20

u/fattokess 1d ago

That doesn’t mean Israel gets to just kill them all without it also being a war crime

27

u/YanicPolitik 1d ago

It's not a war crime to incur collateral damage if your foe is routinely perfidious. Even if Hamas wore uniforms; avoided shooting at the IDF from civilian infrastructure; stopped storing their munitions in the humanitarian zone; only put weapons into the hands of adults; stopped killing/kneecapping civilians who allegedly collude with the IDF; stopped hoarding humanitarian aid for financial profit and manufactured outrage; and if Hamas stopped preventing the evacuation of buildings warned of impending airstike, the civilian casualty figures is still well within the UN's acceptable threshold for urban conflicts.

-7

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

31

u/ACITceva 1d ago

No, the gunmen doesn't "get to" but it is sometimes what happens in war and depending on the circumstances international law recognizes civilian death as entirely legal.

A dead civilian in wartime does not equal a war crime. You can look this up actually.

23

u/HabitualK 1d ago

If you’re a terrorist and put your wife in front of you, you are
A) a coward
B) a legal and viable military target

Your wife then becomes unfortunate collateral damage and the blame is on you, not the military

15

u/ACITceva 1d ago

The thing people don't realize is that the goal of International Humanitarian Law isn't to make war "nice" - the goal is to bring order to something that is unfortunately awful and violent.

If hiding behind civilians was a "free pass" then everybody would start hiding behind civilians.

26

u/ACITceva 1d ago

Combatants don't actually lose their right to strike military targets just because it would result in civilian casualties (with caveats). In fact the side fighting among civilians is committing the war crime.

War crimes by Israel to deliberately kill innocents are too.

-26

u/Random-Cpl 1d ago

Is it not a war crime to launch a bomb at someone you know is a “human shield?”

6

u/xmorecowbellx 1d ago

Which of those groups do you think this event is celebrating?

-48

u/TommaClock Ontario 1d ago

That's literally like every major religion especially the one which made a torture device its symbol.

-26

u/dikbutjenkins 1d ago

Arab people?

256

u/ArtDan4Eva 1d ago edited 1d ago

Just insane. You can have anti-Israel rallies 364 days a year but if you’re doing it on Oct 7 you’re just disrespecting the victims of that day, which makes you garbage.

68

u/proofreadre 1d ago

Anti-Israel is not the same as pro terrorist, which is what that would be

225

u/ArtDan4Eva 1d ago

If you are doing a rally on Oct 7th to "honour martyrs", you are 100% pro terrorist.

136

u/RequirementNo2161 1d ago

They had rallies the night of October 8th the day after it happened. These people told on themselves long ago

49

u/beambag 1d ago

Often it is though

-72

u/proofreadre 1d ago

An anti-Israel protest is not pro terrorist. Stop conflating the two - you do nothing to help Jewish people with this nonsense.

73

u/ResidentNo11 Ontario 1d ago

An anti-Israel event to celebrate martyrs on the anniversary of October 7 is pro terrorist. It does not help Jews to celebrate the rapes, kidnapping, body dragging, etc of October 7, perpetrated against Jews and people living among them.

-16

u/ApotropaicHeterodont 1d ago

That's what proofreadre said in their first comment.

46

u/beambag 1d ago

They're usually full of Hamas supporters and calling for the end of Israel existing as a country at all, not aiming to change policy

-43

u/capybella 1d ago

israel kind of shouldnt exist as a country though. they were given land without the permission of the people living there and are committing a genocide on it currently. ethnostates shouldnt exist and israel is no exception, even besides said genocide they are committing on their stolen land.

46

u/beambag 1d ago

Canada kind of shouldn't exist as a country though. They were given land without the permission of the people living there.

1) the Jewish people originate in the land of Israel, and have had a continuous presence there for thousands of years. You can pinpoint the moments in history when Romans and others ruling the land pushed many Jews out, but as a people Jews are indigenous to Israel.

2) in 1948, the land was ruled by the British. Before that, the Ottomans. The Greeks, Mamluks, Romans, Persians, Egyptians, and so on. It wasnt a country. Arguably, Israel's establishment is one of the most "legal" in the world, with the majority of countries in the UN voting to establish two states in the land. The Jews said "yes," the Arabs said "no" and started a war that they lost. They have denied many opportunities since then tk establish any Palestinian state.

3) so you're saying the Jewish people don't have the right to be a state because you don't support ethnostaes. In that case, do you support a Palestinian state? Article 4 of the Basic Law of the State of Palestine: "Islam is the official religion in Palestine", it would also be an ethnostaes. How about Greece, Italy, or Poland? Malta? Denmark?? Iceland??? They are all Christian ethnostates.

•

u/Blazing1 3h ago

Jesus was Palestinian and didn't even speak Hebrew, and was Jewish.

Palestinians and Jews are indigenous to the Levant.

30

u/Au_Struck_Geologist Outside Canada 1d ago

I think this compresses about 2,000 years of history into "some Europeans were given stolen land," and that's precisely where I disagree.

Israel wasn't created by somebody finding an existing Palestinian nation-state and handing it to Europeans. Palestine had been Ottoman territory for centuries, then a British Mandate after the Ottoman Empire collapsed. Two national movements were making competing claims to the same territory, and the UN proposed partition into both an Arab state and a Jewish state in 1947.

And importantly, the partition plan did not call for Palestinians to be expelled from the Jewish state. It explicitly anticipated a huge Arab minority remaining there as citizens with full civil and political rights, while Jews living in the Arab state would likewise become citizens there. It guaranteed minority rights and specifically protected Arab-owned property in the Jewish state.

The Arab leadership rejected partition. The Jewish leadership accepted it. Civil war followed, Israel declared independence when Britain withdrew, neighboring Arab armies entered the war, and the result was catastrophic for Palestinians. Hundreds of thousands became refugees, including people directly expelled by Jewish/Israeli forces as well as people who fled fighting, fear, and collapsing communities. Israel subsequently prevented most refugees from returning.

We can argue about the morality of every part of that history. What we can't do is retroactively turn the original proposal into "Europe gave the Jews Palestine and told them to kick out the natives." That isn't what was proposed.

I also don't think "ethnostates shouldn't exist" gets you very far unless you're prepared to apply it consistently. Israel formally defines itself as the nation-state of the Jewish people. Fine, criticize that model. But then we're having a much larger conversation about nation-states, because Jewish nationalism is hardly unique in organizing a state around a particular people's national identity.

And Jews aren't simply a European religious group that materialized in Palestine in 1948. Jewish civilization originated there, Jews maintained communities there throughout centuries of diaspora, and large portions of Israel's Jewish population descend from communities in the Middle East and North Africa rather than Europe. None of that erases Palestinian roots there. Two peoples can have genuine historical connections to the same place.

Finally, "Israel shouldn't exist" and "Israel is committing genocide" are separate propositions. Even if you believe the strongest legal characterization of Israel's conduct in Gaza, wrongdoing by a government doesn't retroactively invalidate the existence of the country or its population.

That's ultimately my problem with this framing. Criticize the occupation. Criticize settlements. Criticize the Nation-State Law. Condemn expulsions in 1948 or Israeli conduct in Gaza. There is plenty to argue about.

But "therefore this particular country shouldn't exist" isn't really a solution to those historical injustices. It's just another claim that one of the two peoples living there shouldn't have national self-determination.

-8

u/capybella 1d ago

i didnt say israel shouldnt exist because it is doing a genocide. i said it shouldnt exist because it is an ethnostate on stolen land. you are right! it didnt call for the palestinians to be expelled. and look what happened anyway! citizens of a country should all have the same rights. this is not the case in israel, and i dont think that's okay. and "its not what was proposed" is not like .... related, if its whats currently happening. youre right, it wasnt the plan to do a genocide of the palestinians! it is however what is happening.

i didnt say it is a solution, or even an actionable statement. i said something that i believe is true, but is also not something that i or anyone can fix, because it is done and over as of 1948. i dont agree with it, and i do also believe in a one state solution that involves the dissolution of israel. if israel can find land that is given/sold to them freely and wanted to give its citizens equal rights, that would be different. but its not whats happening now.

•

u/burnabycoyote 8h ago

Nothing wrong with your principles, but the Semitic tribes have been slaughtering each other since time immemorial. This primitive tendency goes deeper than any legal remedies can address.

The Palestinians have been brutalized by a life without purpose in Gaza, this was obvious. We thought we saw a veneer of civilization in the achievements of Israel, but as recent events show, it was not difficult for the Oct. 7 attack to upset and rouse the Old Adam... so it will continue, long after Reddit is forgotten.

•

u/beambag 8h ago

Your leaving out the constant terror attacks by Palestinians that have led to these military actions

19

u/CobblePots95 1d ago

ethnostates shouldnt exist and israel is no exception

Would you apply this to the existence of an Arab Palestinian state then? Or literally any other Middle Eastern country? How is Israel an "ethno-state" in ways that, say, Jordan or Syria are not?

-4

u/capybella 1d ago

because non jewish citizens have less/"different" rights than jewish ones? and also, where did i say if there are other ethnostates that i support their existence? they arent being discussed. i hugely disagree with japanese immigration policy because again, i dont believe in ethnostates. you didnt catch me in anything here.

18

u/CobblePots95 1d ago

because non jewish citizens have less/"different" rights than jewish ones?

lol You seen what rights the Kurds enjoy in Syria? Israel's policies in Gaza and the West Bank are absolutely criminal and appalling, but the rights of ethnic minorities within Israel (one fifth of the population in Israel is Arab) are very well-preserved, particularly when compared to those of any other state in the Middle East and North Africa.

You disagree with Japan's immigration policy, but do you disagree with the very existence of Japan as a sovereign state?

It just seems to me that the standard you've set for 'ethno-states' seems to be very different when that state is Jewish.

-7

u/capybella 1d ago

WHERE DID I SAY I SUPPORT SYRIA? i do not support any nation that has different rights for different citizens i JUST said that.

japan has its own crimes of genocide against the ainu, but also has a culture and hundreds or thousands of years of history. israel was made in 1948 without the permission of the people living on the land already. its not the same and you know it isnt. if your next argument is that israel wasnt created in 1948 because of any biblical history or ancestral land or anything i just dont care to continue this conversation, just in advance.

29

u/Nomoras 1d ago

If you are in and around these spaces, they are incredibly anti-semitic. You just have to peel back one layer.

-19

u/proofreadre 1d ago

I'd be curious what you consider anti-Semitic.

30

u/eebird 1d ago

Supporting Hamas "martyrs" would probably be a good place to start.

Would you not consider that anti-Semitic?

•

u/GH19971 Ontario 9h ago

Every single group leading and organizing these hate rallies is explicitly pro-terror and pro-Hamas explicitly. I defy you to list any exceptions.

•

u/proofreadre 8h ago

Well how about you list the names and proof of pro-Hamas support and we can go from there.

•

u/GH19971 Ontario 7h ago

Palestinian Youth Movement, SJP, and Samidoun all celebrated October 7 then and now. They even named their rallies after Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.

•

u/proofreadre 7h ago

So those 3 orgs are the only ones holding anti Israel rallies?

•

u/Spadesking-1 8h ago

Did you miss the "to honor the martyrs" part?

Its obviously just a maneuver to slap the face of victims and incite and continue hate.

•

u/proofreadre 7h ago

You need to re-read my comment

-33

u/MaximusCanibis 1d ago

By this rationale there shouldn't be any anti-Palestine protests on any day, ever.

238

u/shiftless_wonder 1d ago

The U of T event was expected to take place at 5:30 p.m. at the steps of Sidney Smith Hall, located at the university's St. George campus. The university will "act swiftly to enforce its policies should it become aware of potential violations," said the U of T spokesperson.
Other events are still planned across Canada, including a "gathering" at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and a rally at McGill University in Montreal.

They abhor genocide but memorialize indiscriminate massacres. Very confusing.

55

u/Appropriate_Prune_10 1d ago

Just in time for the activists to get out of bed.

-60

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

One side's freedom fighter is another side's terrorist.

67

u/CoolEdgyNameX 1d ago

Anyone who indiscriminately sprays bullets at a wedding is not a freedom fighter.

-33

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

I agree. Unfortunately some people are blinded by grief. Both sides have killed people at weddings.

49

u/Big_Bomber_97 1d ago

Lmfao you're so smart doing the "both sides" schtick between an actual extremist religious terrorist faction and a liberal democracy with civil liberties for all it's citizens.

People like you genuinely make me sick

-20

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

Yeah, if you ignore the whole land conflict.

33

u/Big_Bomber_97 1d ago

The land conflict that started because the Palestinians and all the surrounding Arab states were never going to be okay with any Jewish state, no matter what size?

11

u/Appropriate_Prune_10 1d ago

Because Jews having their own state is Haram.

30

u/Big_Bomber_97 1d ago

Exactly. There's nothing the jews could have ever done to coexist there peacefully. They would have either had to accept being an oppressed minority again (immediately after the holocaust) or form their own state. I'm glad they chose the second option.

56

u/Acolyte2TheDude 1d ago

So I guess it's not really about the loss of innocent lives then is it.

-18

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

Every side will give more importance to their own losses and less importance to their own victims.

24

u/Acolyte2TheDude 1d ago

So do innocent lives matter or not? This seems like a whole lot of talking in circles for what should be a layup question.

How is "I don't think we should celebrate the killing of civilians and children" now a controversial take in Canadian Universities? I've got no problem showing support for whatever cause but celebrating indiscimate killing? Isn't that... a touch over the line?

-8

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

Definitely not controversial. Terrorism should never be celebrated. Unfortunately, when people are hurt profoundly, whatever side they are on, they tend to give up on civism.

31

u/Big_Bomber_97 1d ago

This is a really horrible and illiberal way to view the world. Plenty of people have had their family or loved ones hurt or killed in a war without turning into hateful monsters. That is a choice driven generally by vile extremist ideology. We shouldn't be giving them as pass just because they got hurt at some point.

→ More replies (8)

24

u/Devourer_of_felines 1d ago

Cute cliche.

So whose freedom was Hamas fighting for? Certainly not the civilians that died under their watch in the most foreseeable counterattack in history

47

u/shiftless_wonder 1d ago

I heard that a lot of young Euro lefties were enamoured with Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge in the 70's. Eventually they figured out who they were rooting for but it took awhile. I see parallels.

3

u/linkass 1d ago

It was not just Euro leftists. Noam Chomsky was a pretty big supporter as well

I think maybe they only started questioning it after Malcom Caldwell was killed

-16

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

Parallels on both sides, yes.

32

u/shiftless_wonder 1d ago

Oct 7 doesn't have an Israeli version.

-5

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

Debatably, similar wrong was done by Israel to innocent civilians on other days.

24

u/shiftless_wonder 1d ago

I'm not trying to make angels of either side. What's being debated on this post seems very clear though. And you seem to be trying to muddy it.

0

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

No. Celebrating Oct 7 is undeniably wrong, but recognizing hurt on both sides is a step towards peace.

15

u/HabitualK 1d ago

Who’s made more offers for steps towards peace? The Israelis or the Palestinians?

-2

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

That matters not. Who stole the first goat, who killed the first man, who avenges the most deaths. There are 100,000 people dead. Enough with the blaming to justify further hate.

Anyone killing civilians including children in close combat with no possible excuse of it being an accident are war criminals, even if they think murdering children brings them freedom.

Let’s just make that distinction really clearly here that murdering kids is never part of one’s freedom fight or national struggle, it’s just war crimes.

-19

u/drs_ape_brains 1d ago

Or they could both be terrorists

29

u/Lurkebot 1d ago

There is legitimate criticism for both sides, but you can’t in good faith call both sides terrorists. Let’s not forget who terrorized who on Oct 7.

-1

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

On Oct 7, it was the Palestinians who committed war crimes against innocent civilians. That doesn't excuse the war crimes commited by Israel againt innocent civilians.

→ More replies (1)

-8

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

That's the point. Both sides are fighting for their cause and in doing so enabling atrocity against their ennemy and innocents.

134

u/elangab British Columbia 1d ago

If you're taking part in "anti-Israel" event on October 7th, you're no better than the "Zionists" you hate so much. You are either capable of seeing the person behind the title, or not.

People should learn from the Israeli-Palestiain Joint Memorial Ceremony taking place every year, for the last 21 years, where both people mourn the deaths in solidarity, and hope and work for a better future and peace.

Stories from October 7th about Muslims savings Jews and friendship and dialogue that started from that, yet North American students are joining to celebrate these lives lost, thinking they know best, while risking zero.

18

u/YeetCompleet Lest We Forget 1d ago

There's eye witnesses statements given by rescued hostages

The beheaded babies story did not come from Israel, it was a mix up of reports from a French outlet.

31

u/beardriff 1d ago

Theres video of hostage being released and her crotch and butt are covered in blood, Far more than from a period.

But yes I'm sure the religious fundamentanlets treated her with respect and dignity

-17

u/QuotingZion 1d ago

The reason Israel didn't release the footage of her being taken out of the military base she was captured in was because you can clearly see her hands bleeding and rubbing blood on the back of her pants. The families themselves had to release the footage eventually bypassing the Israeli government.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kidnapping_of_Naama_Levy

On a side note, only an active duty Israeli soldier being captured on a military base would ever be described as a "kidnapping" on wikipedia. Any other country and it would be "capture".

-7

u/beardriff 1d ago

Fair enough. I concied, I was miss informed.

32

u/sleipnir45 1d ago

You obviously didn't look very hard...

"The United Nations Official Report by Pramila Patten found "clear and convincing information" and "reasonable grounds to believe" that conflict-related sexual violence, including rape and gang rape, occurred during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023."

81

u/LeSickBwoy 1d ago

In my opinion.

This is disgusting.

116

u/Aromatic-Toe-7672 1d ago

Every student or faculty involved in this should be expelled. Also deported if they're not from here

76

u/modsaretoddlers 1d ago

This whole Israeli genocide is just so much gaslighting.

Hamas started this war. We never had anything to do with any of it. Paid actors come on to places like Reddit to push the Hamas narrative and now everybody completely buys it. We now have to hear about a supposed genocide of a people who have and would do everything they claim the Israelis are doing if they got the opportunity while, at the same time, completely forgetting about their own complicity in all of this.

It's obvious that all of the "outrage" is from fake accounts but it's influenced so many people to believe that it's the common sentiment. I honestly don't give a shit one way or another but I would very much like to get these people out of our classrooms and off our campuses no matter which side they represent.

14

u/ValtronW 1d ago

Hamas started this war???

Are you sure about that?

37

u/RequirementNo2161 1d ago

People were holding rallies in Canada on oct 8th the day after it happened. Were these people anti Israel or celebrating Jewish deaths?

-36

u/hipsnarky 1d ago

I don’t know if OP blocked me or just deleted the comment but

He/she said “Hamas started this war…” which is ironic because Israel supported(also created?) Hamas heavily to combat PLO and more. They(Israel) even encouraged Qatar to support Gaza in turn Hamas which is also ironic because that money was allegedly used to fund Oct 7th attacks.

Nothing to do with the rallies that followed Oct 7 which was clearly awful.

16

u/modsaretoddlers 1d ago

Are you not? You have Reddit but not Google? That's weird.

It's UofT if one rich person doesn't want their name on a building, some other rich person will

u/commentinator 1d ago

Of the top 4 donors to u of t, 2 are Jewish.

-17

u/AprilsMostAmazing Ontario 1d ago

And if the Jewish donors pull their donations, there's more than enough rich people to replace them.

Same thing with Yorku. There's a couple different Woodbridge based developers trying to get their name on the incoming med school

17

u/commentinator 1d ago

There isn’t competition for donations. Universities will accept money from anyone who wants. It just happens that Jewish donors dominate donations.

-8

u/AprilsMostAmazing Ontario 1d ago

You are the one that brought up universities losing private funding and then Jewish donors. I'm just stating if couple of rich donors pull out there will be others to replace them.

16

u/commentinator 1d ago

Hmm, I don’t think you’re looking at it the right way. If people pull out donations, that’s a net loss for the school. There aren’t set donation slots that someone else will fill, the school will simply get less.

Oct 7th isn't a smart day to protest Isreal, first of all that was a shit day because people were slaughtered by a bunch of animals. Secondly you play into the government of Isreal's hands as a supporter of mass murder.

You cannot stand on the moral high ground and condemn one side when you are standing in blood yourself. The eye for an eye attitude is why peace will never be reached in the foreseeable future.

Why did we let these people into our country?

-25

u/e00s 1d ago

Is there somewhere where the people who planned this actually explain themselves? This seems to be largely just characterization from their opponents. Those opponents could very well be right. But it’s difficult to assess the situation.

32

u/ACITceva 1d ago

I'm sure it was just some kind of mistake. /s

The Netanyahu government has made some serious mistakes that will likely have ripple effects on the region for generations to come... That being said, innocents on both sides of the conflict died that day. It would be insensitive to hold a celebration of the kind. Glad U of T cancelled the event.

u/bobinski_circus 1d ago

Innocents on both sides…that day…my guy. That day was an attack of one side on the other. One side had innocents that day and one side had attackers.

-48

u/Ina_While1155 1d ago

Agreed but what has followed is inexcusable.

51

u/Lurkebot 1d ago

Only one side was innocent on that day, and it certainly wasn’t the side that launched the attack.

-20

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

Civilians should never be a target, that is undeniable. That being said Israel (not all its citizens) certainly isn't entirely innocent.

40

u/Lurkebot 1d ago

The IDF caused a bit of collateral damage later on while targeting Hamas in self-defense, but the ones deliberately targeting civilians was Hamas. While there is legitimate criticism for both sides, one side is exponentially worse than the other.

•

u/Blazing1 3h ago

You're calling a genocide collateral damage? Buddy, you've gone way too far.

Was the death of the Rwandan president justification for the mass killing of Tutsis in Rwanda?

-7

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

Understatement. The death ratio in the Israel Palestine conflict is roughly 60:1. Civilian deaths roughly 35:1. Israel has been making a lot more victims.

28

u/Lurkebot 1d ago

The key difference is that Israel doesn’t target civilians. Hamas uses civilians to cover themselves by building their bases under them. If anything, Hamas should share the biggest part of the blame for what innocent Palestinians have endured.

-8

u/Epistemic_Democracy 1d ago

35:1 civilian ratio suggests a more complicated reality.

-21

u/WillListenToStories 1d ago

Israel has demonstrably and repeatedly targeted civilians. Why are you lying?

•

u/Blazing1 3h ago

I'm not even sure why you're being downvoted.

Foreign interference.

-28

u/Quaranj 1d ago

So Hind Rajab was wearing a military uniform? Think before you type here.

-24

u/Quaranj 1d ago

Saying they caused "a bit" of collateral damage is like saying that if someone dropped you in the middle of the ocean, you might become a "little wet".

It's the understatement of this whole thread.

October 7th was an attempt at one yes

-13

u/Bamres Ontario 1d ago

Look, you are allowed to think it was a horrific event committed against innocent Israeli civilians because it was. But under no legitimate definition could it be called a genocide attempt, that's just a ridiculous thing to say.

30

u/sleipnir45 1d ago

That's quite literally what Hamas want's to do, they state it openly.

October 7th was another attempt at furthering that goal.

Then what was it? What was the goal

-15

u/Bamres Ontario 1d ago

The event itself was a massacre, to say their goal that day was to commit a genocide would then extend the logic that every single individual murder at any other point would be part of a genocide.

It really is just using a word incorrectly imo.

11

u/sleipnir45 1d ago

You didn't answer the question.

No equating a massive massacre of civilians for 'no apparent reason' is not the same as a single murder

They want to kill his many Jewish people as they could, they want to eliminate all Jewish people from Israel and the world. They say this openly

13

u/elangab British Columbia 1d ago

that's just a ridiculous thing to say.

Which can also be said on whatever is going on in Gaza, yet here we are. I half-agree with you, as I think people over-use the word "genocide", but they did plan a very brutal attack, which they hoped will be joined that day with both Hezbollah and West Bank and terror cells all over. It didn't work out exactly as planned, but not because they didn't try.

Does no one in the Middle East believe in climate change?

Because when reading all these climate scientists, they conclude that in less than 50 years that area will be uninhabitable.  You physically won't be able to live there.

Unless they become like Toronto's mole people and create an underground PATH.

Fighting over land occupation seems pointless when climate doesn't care what religion you are.
