Expat Did the cost of visa extensions go up recently?
Hello,
I'm in kampot, I'm wanting to extend my visa and checked with both the agent that did my first extension and another agent I used for my work permit. They are quoting me $195 for 3 months, $270 for 6 months and $405 for a year. My last 3 month extension was only $95.
I checked with another agent in PP and they only want $85 for 3 months. I'm definitely willing to make the trip to save that much, but worry I'll arrive and find out "oh actually it went up".
I can't find anything online about extensions having gone up so much though.
If anyone knows anything, about the current official rates for EB extensions, please let me know.
All my paperwork is in order, I'm registered in FPCS by my landlord, have a lease, and valid work permit.

Expat FPCS is a terrible system and has to be fixed or abolished
I have rented 3 different condos/houses since 2024 and every single time the land lord does not register me on FPCS even though I am asking for it. They always don't know what it is and don't want to bother learning the system. Almost no one outside Phnom Penh and Siem Reap uses it at this point.
So far I could just register myself with the app but this doesn't work anymore as all residences need to be verified with the local police.
The problem with FPCS is that the landlord has no incentive to register foreigners, yet it is the foreigner that needs FPCS to extend the visa. In theory there are fines but this is just does not happen in reality. Maybe in Phnom Penh, possible but definitely not out in the provinces.
Also why create an app but then make it mandatory to go to the local police office to register? Defeats the entire purpose. Of course you will have to pay bribes to the local police guys to register your account again lol ... Maybe this is the whole point of it? Extracting more money?
Fix FPCS by: Allowing foreigners to self-register so we don't have to rely on the landlord. If we have to go to the police and pay bribes for this, ok. But make it so we can actually do it ourselves. You simply can not expect older, less tech savy landlords in smaller towns to download the app, register an account and then register the foreigner in the system. It is too complex for them.
Now, I know visa agents used to do FPCS themselves so no other ever bothered with it but apparently this is also no longer possible.
Great job Cambodian government with the constant uncertainty and changes regarding visas. It is so tiring. I guess 50 % tourism decline is not enough yet, let's create some more friction so even more people leave.
It is also safe to say that FPCS achieved absolutely nothing. The situation was perfectly fine before it was introduced.

Phnom Penh Stage à Phnom Penh
Bonjour,

Culture Any Old-School gamers around?
I think I asked this a few years ago but whatever.
Are there any gamers into old-school games around? I'm talking anything from Quake 1,2,3 to the earliest Call of Duties (up to MW2 - 2008), War3, Starcraft, UT2004, that sorta stuff.
And if so, are any of you guys into LANning? I'd love to get a small group of chill old-school gamers to have a good ol' LAN party every few weeks or something.
Cheers!

Travel Ton Le Sap and Kampung Phreh
I did a group tour in 2020 before Covid shut things down. We took a boat to a platform on the lap, then a boat to the village, walked around and visited the school and then left. The price per person was very reasonable but the guides…. It was awful. They did a good job with the guiding but on the bus they insisted on telling the weirdest most inappropriate jokes. I looked around and saw the uneasiness on other people’s faces. I did another small group tour in 2024 to Kulen mountain and it was the same thing. My niece was so horrified and I was just embarrassed on the guides behalf. So this year - never again.
I’ve booked a private car and am going to organise the boat to the village separately. My question is this - has anyone done it recently? In the past two weeks? The driver is suggesting a 3pm departure. My guess is to catch the sunrise on Ton Le Sap. I did the 8:30am departure from that cafe where all the buses gather and leave from. It was a long day and I think with just a driver and the two of us, it will not take many hours.
Would like to hear if sunset on the lake is worth it, especially as rain is forecasted in late afternoon. Appreciate your feedback.

Phnom Penh Need advice on becoming an influencer

This is not intended to promote any rivalries with any neighbouring countries. If anything, I'm here to fix it. Alright so, I need help to be an influencer. Problem is that I seems to be stuck with no increase in view or follower whatsoever. Spending money to boost my content doesn't seem to be very effective (and sometime, the platform just doesn't allow me to boost). My best guess is that my content isn't good enough to get good retention rate.

Visas/paperwork Advice on visas
Im an EU citizen, been living in Southeast Asia for a while (7 years, before that 11 years in Africa) and looking for a change of scenery. Planning to base myself in Cambodia for at least 3 months starting November to see if it's somewhere I want to settle longer-term.
I'm 40, income comes from consulting. What's the best visa route for a 3+ month stay right now — ordinary (E-class) visa extended, business visa, or just stacking tourist visas?
Trying to figure out the real-world experience vs. what the official rules say. Any agents in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap you'd actually trust?
Appreciate any first-hand input.

Phnom Penh Safe affordable hotel PP
My niece is coming to Phnom Penh for a month to study and hopefully do some English teaching afterwards or other administrative jobs. She has never traveled before. I’m assisting her financially - I’m helping to find accommodation for the first month. And just for her to get settled and oriented in community. I have a few questions to ask.
Can anyone advise on the most affordable ways to book a month’s accommodation in either a socially active hotel like a backpackers that offers single private rooms or in a shared accommodation with other women or teachers in a homestay or room mate scenario with her own room? I say socially active so she will be able to make friends or meet others.
I also wanted to ask what a decent amount in dollars is to be able to pay for a month’s living expenses. She will find her own accommodation in month two and hopefully a job! She is open to all opportunities but what is the lowest kind of salary she can expect once she finds a job either in teaching or admin (her background).
Then does anyone know of any counseling or other services should she need some therapeutic support when days get tough?
Lastly are there any Christian churches that are healthy and not overly evangelical or culty that she might be able to attend.
Thank you in advance. I appreciate any tips and experience to help us make this successful for her as she really needs a break in life she’s been through a lot.

Expat Da Nang, Vietnam vs Cambodia. Anyone lived in both long-term?
My partner and I have been living in Da Nang for a while and really enjoy it, but we’re considering spending more time in Cambodia and possibly making it our longer-term base.
We’ll be spending a few weeks in Cambodia soon, including Siem Reap, Kampot, and Phnom Penh, but I’d really like to hear from people who have actually lived in both Vietnam and Cambodia, not just visited.
For those who have, how would you compare them for day-to-day life?
Things I’m especially curious about:
- Overall cost of living (Cambodia is higher? But do you get more for your money?)
- Apartment/house quality and value for the money (Viet prices are climbing and apartments are tiny)
- Healthcare
- Food and grocery costs
- Transportation and getting around (We don't ride motobike)
- Internet and utilities
- Walkability
- Noise, traffic, and general stress level
- Expat community / making friends
- Teaching English vs opening a business. (A unique/novel business, not the normal cafe/bar/yoga) and/or travel vlogging
- General quality of life
We’re not really into nightlife or partying. We prefer a fairly laid-back lifestyle, good food, coffee shops, walking around, exploring, and having most everyday necessities nearby.
Da Nang is obviously hard to beat when it comes to the beach, infrastructure, and convenience, but Cambodia seems to have some advantages when it comes to visas, opportunities, a bit more living/breathing space and possibly cost/freedom of day-to-day living?
For anyone who has lived in both: What were the biggest adjustments and was there anything you loved about Cambodia at first but got tired of after living there for a while, or vice versa with Vietnam?

Finance Metfone problem
Metfone are a mess in my opinion ... recently I lost my phone along with my sim card which has connected with Facebook WHICH also connected to a lot of game and other platform I lost it all because I enable 2 factor authentication which will send message to my 2 lost phone and through WhatsApp and phone number it's ... I'm disappointed I called them and ask if I can recover my phone number they said unless you have the proper national ID card and statement they will allow it... Which alright turn to 2020 and such phone merchant sell phone and sim card (sim card which they register with their ID) I didn't know how much it matter back then ... They simply flatly refuse now because even with bank statement that you frequently top up phone data and such they need ID they won't even bother I will refuse to use metfone forever shit I will even use beeline atp :) it's Soo bad I'm pissed cause my account worth hundred of dollar I have a lot of email yes I recovered a lot of account but some of them still matter 100-1000 of hour just to get shit on especially Facebook their services suck I will forever refuse to use Facebook to bind my account or phone number (metfone) This is bullshit bank statement is enough to confirm it yet this piece of shit made it worst I now need to go to the bank 2 bank and the metfone company my lord this is gonna take a fuck while if you guy has the same issue I would like to read and take on more information it would help me a lot

Expat What do Cambodians think of the Ian Muldoon situation?
Ian Muldoon was drugged at a bar, and stumbled into an ATM machine, breaking the glass. He ended up in prison, and recently described the inhumane conditions. Is his experience an anomaly? Should travelers be concerned?
There's a podcast episode from True Crime Australia that goes into the details.
Edit: Most of the discussion is about how Muldoon shouldn't have gotten blacked out drunk, rang the bar bell, left his drink unattended, lied about how late he was out, or vandalized the ATM machine. My question is actually trying to understand if this unfair trial, disproportionate punishment, high level of bribery and corruption, and unspeakable horrors of the prison system is something that Cambodians are aware of, and live in fear of. Do they experience similar treatment, or are most too poor to be bothered, since arresting them won't produce any reasonably-sided bribes?

Phnom Penh Wife and her family
So I just found out after my wife and I got married that she is living at her uncles house and he is my friend and I’m met her though him and another friend . Long story story. Wife lives in Phnom Penh and her uncle is coming in 2 days . After we meet and do the ceremonies last April she says that he bit her mom and that the house her and her family is living in is his but she also said her dad bought it so I don’t know.
And she said she is going to rent a house if she and her family is told to move but she asked me to get land before in the country . The uncle once told me to go get some land there so the wife and i could live when I visit . Its a lot of drama and don’t know what’t to do
