First-month data: Vienna Capital Bikeshare use is surprisingly strong

Vienna’s new Capital Bikeshare stations are seeing about 3× the usage intensity of the Tysons Metro stations — first-month data analysis from an economist who expected to see the opposite.

I am bemused that he twice says he has no idea what you're supposed to do if you get to a station and there are no empty docks. (The answer of course is that if you tell CaBi there are no docks available, it will give you fifteen minutes of free ride time to get to another station--which, given the scarcity of stations in Vienna, isn't going to help very much.) However, I just spent several minutes poking around the CaBi website, and if this information is documented there I can't find it. So I can't fault him for not knowing, I guess!

(That said, I can fault him for providing, as a citation for "note that most of what rental bikes and scooters do is displace walking, not driving," a screenshot of Google's AI answer--and the AI's named source for this is apparently a Reddit post. Come on, dude. If you're going to say "most studies show this," link to some studies. I'm not even saying he's wrong, I'm just annoyed by sloppy research.)

Good points. Also, you can leave an ebike next to a full dock and CaBi will waive the parking fee.

Happy to see bikeshare getting blogged about. I used the bikeshares in Reston a fair amount when I worked there, and some to visit friends. Tysons is just a terrible place with all the stroads.

A better comparison for Vienna is probably Falls Church, similar artery road downtown layout (7 in FC is like Maple in Vienna) with neighborhoods, W&OD. Of course FC adds on 2 Metros with eaiser bike access, whereas riding to the metro from downtown Vienna is not great (and the bikeshare station at the metro is on the opposite side of 66)

Not apples to apples but the report on Arlington's dockless mobility pilot showed: "The evaluation also shows that SMD users have opted to take a scooter instead of a vehicle (car or ride-hailing), which could suggest that this transportation option helps get cars off the road, leading to less emissions and a less congested landscape. According to survey results from the study, 32% of e-scooter rides replaced a car trip (13% personal vehicle and 19% ride hailing). Also encouraging is that “only 5% of e-scooter riders and 7% of e-bike riders” said they were replacing a bus or Metrorail trip."

The WO&D trail is just such as awesome resource for the town to encourage usage. Navy Fed to Dunn Loring is an easy ride and you already have employees who use bikes to get to the metro in DC when they commute out.

Would be even higher if they put more than three bikes at GMU.
