Moving to DC 🚲
Hi! I’m moving to DC for a year and I’d like to bring my bike. I’ll be in DuPont circle and Hill East areas. I’m looking for advice re: a couple things:
+
- what’s a good and friendly bike shop for me t
o ship
- my bike to and have built upon arrival? My home bike shop recommended this vs driving with it across country.
+ what are some
fun and friendly cycling meet ups? I’m no pro, but I love group cycling.
Currently I join a women’s ride as it fits my schedule but I’m open to any chill and welcoming group that isn’t trying it stay over 19mph. I average 13-18 depending on hills (I am a terrible climber right now).
+what trails do you recommend? I’m primarily a road cyclist
, considering bringing my gravel bike as well
.
I love a good long autumn ride.
Anything else I shouldn’t miss?
Thanks so much!

Welcome to the DMV! You got a lot of reccomendations for trails and bike shops that are all good. In terms of some fun cycling groups , keep in mind the main season for these groups did just end but some of them will have smaller rides going into the fall season.
626 is a good social cycling group. They typically have rides than range from 12 - 16 MPH average and is a good mix between social and serious riding. Their regular schedule just wrapped up but they have a Instagram, Strava group, and Discord group where you can find about smaller rides, I know they have a few unofficial ones coming up.
Potomac Pedalers is a more serious road riding group that tends to be on the faster side (15+ MPH) but they tend to have rides at several different times and paces and have a calendar on their website of the rides and pacing. But this is a more formal group.
Not a group per se and they were mentioned below but WABA has their annual Cider Ride coming up and you can register for that and you can bike in groups for that one as well! They will typically have a no drop group where you can ride with some marshals and in a group setting if you want to ride together with people. Personally it’s my favorite of the WABA rides.
