Moving to DC 🚲

Hi! I’m moving to DC for a year and I’d like to bring my bike. I’ll be in DuPont circle and Hill East areas. I’m looking for advice re: a couple things:

+

  1. what’s a good and friendly bike shop for me t

o ship

  1. my bike to and have built upon arrival? My home bike shop recommended this vs driving with it across country.

+ what are some

  1. fun and friendly cycling meet ups? I’m no pro, but I love group cycling.

Currently I join a women’s ride as it fits my schedule but I’m open to any chill and welcoming group that isn’t trying it stay over 19mph. I average 13-18 depending on hills (I am a terrible climber right now).
    +

  2. what trails do you recommend? I’m primarily a road cyclist

, considering bringing my gravel bike as well

  1. .

I love a good long autumn ride.

Anything else I shouldn’t miss?

Thanks so much!

nice, welcome.

  • i like bicyclespace, bicycle pro shop, daily rider, griffin cycles if you're in bethesda. do not go to conte's.
  • what kind of group vibe/average speed are you looking for? lots of options here.
  • not road but you should plan to ride the C&O canal while you're here — it's one of the country's real gems

edited to add the daily rider because i forgot about them oops! i'm never on h street anymore

Seconding C & O as a gem where you can absolutely gun it if you want. Anacostia river trail for leisurely rides with a lovely stop at the kenilworth aquatic gardens. Mt. Vernon trail for a route with a great volunteer corps supporting it -- find them on social media. (Also you can bike all the way down to the Mt. Vernon estate! Pro tip -- admission to Mt. Vernon is free on president's day weekend!)

DC Bird Alliance and DC Cycling Concierge will be taking a birding by bike tour along the Anacostis trail to the Aquatic Gardens his Saturday!! Ticket includes admission to the after-party at the Go-Go Museum! Love, love, love, the Anacostia river trail!
