[FULL AB] Jackson Chourio vs. Mason Miller
674
u/ParticularGoal3221 5h ago
That "take" on the slider...what an at bat.
206
u/R0binSage Milwaukee Brewers • Beloit Sky Carp 5h ago
There was a huge chance that was a fastball middle middle. Game over.
109
u/JKBraden Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago
Yeah, he looked so overmatched up to then. What a moment.
269
u/ThomPinecone Milwaukee Brewers 4h ago
The moment he caught a piece of 104 and sniffed the fucking bat he knew he was in control
82
u/The_Boredom_Line Milwaukee Brewers 4h ago
Immediately made me think of how Ted Williams would ask players if they smelled burnt wood after fouling off pitches.
22
u/PhilShabano 2h ago
Yep, he forced the slider. When Miller couldn't make it tempting enough, he knew the heater was coming and didn't miss it.
12
u/0pyrophosphate0 Milwaukee Brewers 3h ago
I want his season batting stats after sniffing the bat. Does anybody track that?
5
u/EggCouncilCreep Toronto Blue Jays 1h ago
This is baseball. You know someone out there tracks that.
25
u/underwear11 New York Yankees 4h ago
I thought he was kissing the bat for catching a piece
28
u/Igettheshow89 3h ago
He was mad he missed
11
u/JohnTheSecondComing Kansas City Royals 2h ago
I honestly think he realized he had set himself up. I might be taking crazy pills here. But if you swing at low and away paint, the next pitch should’ve been fastball, he was set up for slider to chase even further. He was taking all the way. Idk I pitched once in high school lol.

u/Bidens_infinite_cash 54m ago
Yeah you could see it in his face and his walk. He knew he had seen enough to lace the next fastball he saw
3
u/GamerJosh21 Boston Red Sox • White Sox Bandwagon 3h ago
At least he wasn't licking it like Yasiel Puig...
1
u/1sinfutureking Milwaukee Brewers 14m ago
I’ve been watching him all season; that was him being angry that he missed the pitch. He’s 22 and he thought “damn it I had that 104 mph heater”
3
u/johnnysmashiii Los Angeles Dodgers 34m ago
I was losing my mind at this moment - 104 and you think you missed it?? Mentality monster
1
u/ProcessTruster Major League Baseball 1h ago
It was a big day for sniffing. Mason Miller was huffin' a bottle in the bullpen.
29
u/jdelane1 Atlanta Braves 3h ago
If you showed that slider to a hitter from 30 years ago he'd think it wasn't real
7
u/PhilShabano 2h ago
Yep, if that slider is three inches higher, no way he could have taken it. That was the at bat.
2
u/Pupienus Chicago Cubs 1h ago
Between the take on this slider and the take Harper had on Suarez' changeup in the NLCS in 22 (also against the Padres lol), I think managers should embrace the mid-AB pitching change more often. If a hitter takes a pitch that good, it feels like it never ends well for the pitcher.
458
u/see_mohn regretful mets fan 5h ago
Command tends to go when a pitcher is running out of gas and trying to get that last out, but even so Chourio fighting off 104 on the corner, laying off a slider, and then squaring up 101 for a hit up the middle is unbelievable.
234
u/Dinoswarleaf Milwaukee Brewers 4h ago
Chourio was pissed he didn't time up 104 like bruh ☠️
110
30
u/Rocinante24 Toronto Blue Jays 3h ago
He was right on it too. Perfect timing. I'm surprised miller went fastball away again after that.
5
u/Lets_Reset_This_ San Diego Padres 2h ago
I thought it looked like he was kissing his bat and thanking it for getting a piece off the end.
8
u/Rocinante24 Toronto Blue Jays 1h ago
I thought he was kissing it like 'we had it'.
That swing was perfectly on time, if he squared it up, it would've been a single over 2b.
65
54
u/NeedMoarCowbell 4h ago
Taking a 12-6 slider just inches below the zone when you have 2 strikes facing a guy throwing 102-104 is just… I cannot explain how fucking unbelievable that is.

it helps if the team you support has won a world series in your living memory, i'd imagine
5
u/TerrenceJesus8 Toledo Mud Hens • Detroit Tigers 3h ago
Sure, but it's not like the Tigers have won the World Series in my specific living memory, and the Tigers have had quite a few devestating loses and blew the largest lead in MLB history last year. I still will argue the losses are part of the gig

I won't watch it either (nor anything to do with game 7 of the 2004 Stanley Cup Final), but I would much rather lose in game 7 of the greatest World Series ever played than be watching it on TV in Cancun.
4

Just game 7? I find that I can't even enjoy the earlier good moments of a series if it ended like that. (I can enjoy the previous series that got the team there though)

I thought it was over when he went down 1-2, Wainwright was right to be impressed by him taking that slider to make it 2-2 because a lot of guys would've been looking to swing over the top of it trying to stay alive
Great hitting by Chourio

u/Infinite_Response113 Boston Red Sox 4h ago
The foul off the 104mph with already two strikes is the real MVP
54
u/RaphInChi85 Milwaukee Brewers 4h ago
I’d say taking the following slider was probably even more difficult. As a batter, I’d just be sitting on the fastball. All time great take.
8
u/noconsequences_1 4h ago
Yeah that take blew me away. Made me think he might’ve known it was coming. Incredibly impressive if he didn’t
3
u/Dashin-through-dough 3h ago
I assume he was only hunting fastball and would take strike three looking on the slider
4
u/Clever-Innuendo Boston Red Sox 3h ago
I let out an audible “WOW” on that one. I didn’t need to see the mph to know that ball came in hot as hell.
91
u/PattyIceNY New York Yankees 4h ago
Crazy how fast he must have been swinging. If you pause the ball as it's halfway home, he still has barely moved, and then he gets the bat around in like a millisecond.
Also love the "foul off a fastball and smell the bat for smoke" move
62
u/kiwileaff Milwaukee Brewers 4h ago
The lightning quick hands and swing was a big selling point for him as a prospect. Saw him hit a homer in high A as an 18 y/o and immediately knew he was legit big leaguer.

Which one is he, the one that said "I'm telling you he's setting him up"? Like no shit dude, first time watching a pitcher work? Do you think Chourio is stupid and doesn't also know what's happening? Miller looked like he had his stuff. No excuses. Just a really good at bat
39
u/Bruce_Louis 4h ago
That slider was an all time take. As a pitcher you feel Churrios sitting on that fastball, had the timing down. Given from the commentators on how well Churrios been hitting the slider, youd naturally want to slide that slider into the dirt, get Churrios out in front and antsy about smashing a fastball. But no, he spit on it. All time take and I think you just have to tip your cap there to the hitter.
9
u/whats_a_rimjob Chicago White Sox 2h ago
You could tell from Millers body language that he couldn't believe he didn't swing. All time take.

u/bicyclemom New York Mets 4h ago
You really wondered if Chourio can catch up at all with that fastball after he misses the first pitch swinging about two weeks after it arrives in the catcher's mitt.
Then he fouls off that 104mph pitch and you wonder if he's got it now....
What an at bat. This was wonderful to watch.

I know there's a phrase ultimate grand slam if you're down three, but is there a generic term for a walk off where you turn a loss into a win with two outs? They're so amazing.
Something like "sudden death walk off"

I saw a comment in another thread. The Brewers faced 28 pitches from Miller in the 9th, and they didn’t swing at a single one out of the zone. Insane plate discipline

It is wild to me that San Diego did not foresee that they might ask Miller to go two innings in the playoffs and prepare him for that during the season.

Guarantee if they did that people would be pissed that they don’t save his arm lmao

Right away there were people worried that the pitch clock would ruin these postseason moments because the drama wouldn't have as much time to build. This proves that completely wrong. Absolute cinema.
