Thinking that the world champs would punt a playoff game down two runs is silly

Keep going boys, the whole baseball world is behind you.

u/GameTimeJones_32 15m ago
Wait, what? You think “the whole baseball world” is behind the Padres? For a team that’s never done anything they have a LOT of haters. Machado’s laziness and terrible attitude?Tatis look at me peacocking and PED use? All the whining? That roof thing was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen happen to a baseball team. The baseball gods would only let that happen to the Padres.
24
u/BOOMSHAK4LAKA Chunichi Dragons 2h ago
If Machado would’ve put forth some effort and made it to third instead of being thrown out to end the inning, I wonder if that would’ve changed the overall outcome.
4
18
u/parposbio Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago
You can do that with so many plays. Example: if Turang fields that ball up the middle cleanly and turns two, I wonder if the Padres ever even score two, let alone three, runs.
There's just no point in playing what if.

It’s not over. We merely lost 2 road games. We could win the next 2 and see what happens.

I’m really not sure why you got downvoted for stating that we could win two home games at Petco, where it will be fucking rocking, and where we just swept the Cubs.

Asking him to try was fine after that dominant first inning, I feel like, but you need to be willing to pull the plug.

That was without a doubt the best 9th inning win I have ever seen! Absolutely incredible.

Freddie freeman hit a walk off grand slam in the 9th inning. What?
Edit: hate all you want, you know that’s the most dramatic way to win in the ninth.0

We’re not cursed. It’s just us burning off the the bad karma we incurred during from Ray Kroc. Once his soul has attoned for the slaughter of millions of cows, we will win the WS.
Until then, we shall leave the bases filled with un-scoring runners while the world makes the same “now this is Padresing” joke.

What’s the point of having the best bullpen in the league if you’re going to overexpose your best guy?
9
u/BustinChopsHere Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago
Padres bull pen ranked 10. Brewers are second. Yanks in the lead
22
u/Kooky-Poem4083 4h ago
Yep I kept thinking they would pull Miller but I see I was wrong
15
u/thecountoncleats Pittsburgh Pirates 4h ago
I’m still completely mystified. San Diego’s entire pen is a lethal weapon.
I said somewhere downthread that leaning on your one good/decent reliever is a Hail Mary move a lot of clubs have no choice but to make. The Padres are definitely not one of those clubs.
8
u/newkie445 Los Angeles Dodgers 3h ago
I would say holding on to a one run lead to avoid going down 2-0 in a best of 5 series is hail mary time
3
u/thecountoncleats Pittsburgh Pirates 3h ago
Sure I get that as a general principle and I agree. My thing is you’re asking Miller to do something he’s never done before successfully, and do it in almost the highest leverage situation imaginable.
Even worse, when he’s obviously struggling you leave him out there. You’re not even warming anyone up.
And San Diego’s manager has an embarrassment of riches to choose from in that pen. Like I said, a lot of/most clubs have numerous weak links in their bullpen and in that situation they might really have no choice but to push and pray. It’s hard to imagine pressing Miller into a six out save was their best option.
4
u/0pyrophosphate0 Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago
Leaving him out there definitely looks bad in hindsight, but with the defense behind him, he was always one pitch from getting out of it and making the save.
1
u/thecountoncleats Pittsburgh Pirates 1h ago
It doesn’t look bad. (Except not pulling him when it was clear he was in trouble). It’s not like Mr. Magoo was out there.
I think it’s just confusing for a lot of us who are fans of teams with shitty bullpens when a team with a top bullpen makes the same sort of bullpen decisions our team does.
2
u/1234puppies San Diego Padres 2h ago
It was our best option. Today was a must win game. Too bad Yuki walked those guys, Brewrs put the pressure on us by only taking 6 swings the final inning - were by Curio. We didnt execute and barely lost 2 games to the best team in baseball on The road.
Brewers are really good. Pads are right there with them. Just lost 2 nail bitters. We could be up 2-0, but dems da breaks.
We could win the next 2 in SD.
67
u/banjoslurpee 4h ago

25
u/the_Q_spice Milwaukee Brewers 4h ago
Megill is fine with it; literally got asked in a pregame interview because he threw 1.1 innings yesterday.
The issue wasn’t necessarily the 1.2 innings; the issue was the 40 pitches in that span.

Although Damon's grand slam in the 2nd inning of game 7 is burned into my brain. I think its because thats the moment when I knew it was actually going to happen.

u/gelatinouscone Philadelphia Phillies • Boston Red Sox 4h ago
Those were the days. Didn't have a TV and I listened to most of those on the radio. Then it started to get too exciting and I went to the bar to watch the last games.
1
u/Baseball_is_the_best New York Yankees 3h ago
I was in college in VA at a packed bar with my friends and was literally the only Yankee fan there. And its not like everyone else were Sox fans... they were just "anybody-except-the-Yankee" fans. Which, like, given the prior 8 years, I get it.
But it was what I imagine hell to be like.

Chourio had the big hit, but yeli broke up the perfect game to start a rally in the 5th and took the walk in the 9th to start another one. The Brewers are only as good as Yelich. He was just named the Captain and we absolutely need him. I know how you feel padres.
12
u/EfficientDot18 Texas Rangers 3h ago
Yelich had a very good game today. The RBI drought continues, but he got on base and hit well.

Plus Gary’s AB before Chourio! The discipline to get walked in that scenario is peak.
