[Highlight] ESPN Radio booth reacts to Austin Wells deciding to go to 3rd base, including Tim Kurkjian with an all-time reaction

u/i_miss_arrow 1h ago
There is a line of seats at in the bottom left corner.
Watch the first person who stands up. About the 12 second mark he puts his hands up in the exact same manner that Kurkjian does half a second later.

Ah perfect. The guy with the 42 jersey on. You saying the first guy that stands up worked. Thank you.

This is so hilarious, and the best part is when he made that gesture... based on the play by play and my rough time counting, Wells had only just basically hit second and he was like "WTF are you doing." Like.. it was so obviously dumb even when the ball was still in right field.
Which is of course what everyone at home was also thinking lol.
18
u/grubas New York Yankees 10h ago
They cut to a camera on the 3b line and he rounded 2nd with his head down and took a WIDE line. I was at the bar and started the "NO NO NO NONONO".
12
4
u/_BryceParker 9h ago
I mean it works out if third base was accidentally placed 20 feet closer to second. Worth the risk. Never know when the runner is the only person in the stadium to have noticed that little positioning error.
1
u/INAC___Kramerica New York Yankees 6h ago
I was in the right field seating area last night. I had almost a perfect line on the throw coming in from the OF. And so I see the throw and start tracking it, and then suddenly I realize Wells has JUST rounded second and his back is now to me, and it's just an instant feeling of "oh no fucking way is he really doing this". Like, I didn't bother tracking Wells because that was the most obvious "stand up 2-base hit" situation on the planet. If anything, I was noticing Giancarlo moving onto the field to PH for McMahon and then suddenly he wasn't gonna be hitting anymore that inning.

u/cannednopal San Diego Padres 11h ago
Not even a coaching issue either cause third base coach put up the stop sign, the players are just dumb
45
u/jdd32 St. Louis Cardinals 11h ago
I mean maybe not a coaching execution issue in the moment, but the coaching staff is responsible for the base running training/prep, and the culture that allows a player to blast through a stop sign in the most critical moment of their season.
8
u/JTitty18 Cleveland Guardians 5h ago
He didn't blast through it though, he straight up didn't look. Personally I think this one moment was just a player being overzealous thinking they need to do something extra when you team is getting dominated. I agree that the coaching has been a constant issue for the team though.

u/Audacity_OR Texas Rangers • Texas Rangers 11h ago
Not to absolve Wells of being a dumbass cause that was totally boneheaded but if the players don’t trust the coaches that absolutely could be a coaching issue.

I like the reaction of the fans in the bottom left. Clearly a yankee fan stands up on the crack of the bat with hands up, then crashes down with his head in his hands as the rest of the crowd around him explodes to their feet, when Wells is gunned down at third.

u/ColeYote Canada 7h ago edited 7h ago
I mean, on the one hand, yes, but on the other there’s also just much less relative advantage to being on third with two outs, so it’s an even more boneheaded move to take that risk and get caught.

Quick question, does this not still keep the no hitter intact? Or is it a hit once the batter advances beyond 1st?

Yes, it's scored a double because he reached second safely, out 9-4(?)-5 trying to stretch it to a triple.

u/MelonElbows Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago
Newish baseball fan here, got a question about the rules on this play.
So Wells got thrown out at 3rd when everyone thought he should have stayed on 2nd. That would have been a double and ended the no-hitter. But it feels like the rule should be that since he was thrown out, the whole sequence wouldn't count as a hit and the no-hitter would still be preserved. Why is him going to 3rd and getting thrown out not treated the same as if he was thrown out? I'm guessing officially, it counts as him hitting a double?
If he had gotten thrown out at 2nd, does he get credited for a single and the pitcher still loses their no-hitter? Basically as long as he crosses first base safely, the no hitter is gone?
18
u/metallikat87 Chicago Cubs 7h ago
Yes, he had a hit once he reached first base. From there it becomes a question of what kind of hit; double, triple, etc.
13
u/ColeYote Canada 7h ago
Yes, long as you get to first it counts as a hit. Pretty sure the rules are like that for the sake of situations where a run scores on a play where somebody also gets the last out of an inning.
2
u/chimayoso New York Yankees 11h ago

Bro was lumbering before he even touched second base. You might not score from second, but you definitely won't score when the third baseman gets the ball so early that he could take a coffee break before tagging you out.

Yup. Momentum is real and pitch decisions would have been different with a guy on second vs. a clean inning.
Just an incredible unforced error by Wells to give the Rays an easier win.
