I’m so pissed that this is objectively one of the most badass playoff moments of the last five years. So cool to see him so fired up and then follow through by finishing a great performance.

If only he could have been facing the Yankees or Astros or something…

At the same time, I'll just cite a poem that I'm pretty sure you should be familiar with, given that Joe Castiglione loved to recite it at every seasons' end:

Baseball breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall all alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops."

Similarly - when a dude is making his major league debut at the plate or on the mound, the moment is so much fun because it’s just mano y mano. Watching a dude get his first hit or strikeout is so tangible.

95

u/CydoniaKnight Los Angeles Angels • Sell 8d ago

Yeah, rookies can obviously have their moments in other sports, but there's something about a hitter digging in for the first time, just him and the pitcher, all eyes on them.

Especially if they’ve been grinding in the minors for years! Guys get drafted in other sports and see the field immediately.

The NFL would fine him and his daughter into oblivion.

33

u/AssassinSnail33 Chicago Cubs 8d ago

The NFL is definitely run by clowns, but I disagree with this. When Drew Brees broke the career passing yards record, they paused the game and had the head ref come out and give him the ball and some sort of certificate. Then he went and celebrated with his family on the sideline while the game stayed paused. The MLB is the best at this, but the NFL respects the greats too

22

u/ChasesICantSend 8d ago

A funny version of this was in 1972, the Falcons hadnt had much to root for so when Dave Hampton became their first 1000 yard rusher, they stopped the game, gave him the game ball, had a whole ceremony. They hand it to him the next play, and he loses enough yards to fall below 1000, and that was his last attempt on the season because the Chiefs ate the rest of the clock. Later on in 1975 when he again became their first 1000 yard rusher in the final game, they immediately pulled him so it couldnt happen again

168

u/INAC___Kramerica New York Yankees 8d ago

The phrase "end of an era" can get overused sometimes, but it's more true in Verlander's case than it is with most.

Verlander is the last is of his type of pitcher, of his upbringing in the game, how pitchers were used when he first came up, and the volume of innings he threw. Forget that he's the last guy who will ever even come close to the 300 win club, he's the last guy who will ever throw 250 innings in a season. Even the very best pitchers either don't get used that heavily, and/or break before they get to that point. Even deGrom at his peak of both health and dominance (he didn't miss a start in his consecutive Cy Young seasons) "only" threw 217 and 204 innings in those seasons.

His retirement is indicative of a time in baseball that's never coming back. When Verlander walked off the mound, so went with him that entire archetype and philosophy of pitching.

23

u/TournamentCarrot0 Detroit Tigers 8d ago

I will never forget the insanity of of his starts...he'd get STRONGER as the game goes on...throwing harder deeper into the games...which is nuts to think you're starting around 95 and climbing into the triple digits in the 3rd time through the lineup. He was an insane pitcher.

Sometimes people will ask me why I’m such a nut about sports, especially because it probably seems like I spend most of my time complaining about how bad my teams are or something stupid they did. Well, it’s moments like this. The raw, unscripted human emotions that sports can evoke and the hope that your fandom will pay off with this type of moment.

I’m not a Tigers fan and I’ve never particularly felt much for the Tigers good or bad, but damn if this didn’t move me on a fall Saturday when I’m caring way more about college football.

The Red Sox broadcasters mentioned that a few weeks ago. All I know is I’d be a sobbing mess if that was the case. It’s hard to hang up the cleats for anyone, let alone a major league pitcher that gets to go out on his own terms.

Would’ve been funnier if he shook his head and told her to leave him in.

If my daughter came running into my job like that, my reaction would be “Oh wow I have a daughter! And a job.”

You can’t be out there doing a hug like that.

This made me an emotional wreck. Didn't really get into baseball until around 2003 and Verlander debuting when I was only 13 was the first player I truly got attached to as my favorite player as I myself loved pitching. It hurts to see it come to an end, next stop Cooperstown.

u/ZeroLimitz Atlanta Braves 8d ago

Dammit guys 🥺 can't be doing this to me when I'm supposed to be angry about college ball...

Beautiful moment, congrats on a fantastic career Verlander and well done Detroit 👏

Aw man! That got me. I swear, having kids makes it so much easier to start crying at moments like these.

Glad her and Kate to get to spend more time with Justin. Hell of a career.

This absolutely destroyed me. Just such an awesome moment. For us old guys it’s a weird space we’re in as these generational players like JV are now gone

That might be the coolest family thing in baseball. Far second is Griffey Jr. stealing ball from Griffey Sr.
