This post has reached r/all or r/popular, which means it’s now being seen by a much wider audience outside our usual community. To help keep the discussion high-quality and protect the space from spam, trolling, and rule-breaking, we’ve turned on "Players Only" mode.

What that means:

  • Regular contributors (based on subreddit karma) can comment freely on the post while this mode is active.
  • Comments from users below that threshold will be held for review and approved if they are not rule-breaking.

Thanks for your understanding and for helping keep the conversation thoughtful and on-topic.

I laughed so hard when they cut to this. Is this normal???

1.1k

u/doublegoldendragon Los Angeles Dodgers 29d ago

They did it when I was there a few weeks back

401

u/uofwi92 29d ago

How does it work? Like what’s the “game”? Start them on opposite sides of the stadium? How is it presented, please? Thanks!

739

u/doublegoldendragon Los Angeles Dodgers 29d ago

Yeah one starts by the first base dugout and the other by the third base dugout. The crowd has like 30 second to put them together

554

u/EvenMoreCoconuts New York Mets 29d ago

I had no idea it was timed. That makes this moment so much more cool. Maybe it was in the dying seconds.

271

u/Col_Leslie_Hapablap Toronto Blue Jays 29d ago

I’ve never seen this after decades of watching baseball and this easily outperforms “the wave” in every aspect. I loved this so much.

115

u/RojoTheMighty 28d ago

I mean, that's not a fair comparison at all. Anyone can start the wave and get the entire stadium involved. I don't think any random two people have a 20ft inflatable hot dog & bun on opposite sides of the stadium.

That said, this was indeed super cool!

u/ReindeerCreepy2883 San Diego Padres 28d ago

They bring out the weiner and bun in different sections each game. Then someone announces that we have to complete the hotdog to get a free hotdog at QuikTrip. Once the hotdog is assembled they show a QR code on the jumbotron for 2 seconds. I was very disappointed when I didn't scan the code in time.

35

u/uofwi92 29d ago

That’s pretty cool. Except for the duration. Literally two seconds? I’d figure you want peeps to actually redeem the coupon.

30

u/Tubamajuba Houston Astros 28d ago

Seeing as QuikTrip sponsored it, I'd imagine they want to give away as few free hot dogs as possible.

13

It's new this year. It is a marketing thing for the QuikTrip gas station (which is also their sleeve patch). But is a brilliant marketing scheme. And super fun to do and watch.

I immediately like it. Don't get me wrong, I like a good old "if the home team gets a home run in the fourth inning there's a free hot dog tomorrow" or whatnot, but something like this that actually gets the fans engaged with the challenge/promotion directly is fantastic. It's like how everyone at Truist (including visitors) seems to love Beat The Freeze, and this has the crowd as a whole working together instead of just one guy.

Never heard a laugh like that from a broadcaster

132

u/bolieve11 Toronto Blue Jays • Chaos Bandwagon 29d ago

Caleb Joseph is a treasure, him converting miles to kilometres and Dan calling him out was gold

66

u/sleither Toronto Blue Jays 29d ago

Honestly, for the post-Buck era Dan and Caleb are my preferred broadcast team. Joe is a pro but Caleb has some great crazy energy. Dan is the best and drawing the silly out of him in appropriate ways and keeping his rants in check.

28

u/bolieve11 Toronto Blue Jays • Chaos Bandwagon 29d ago

Yeah, definitely more chemistry between Caleb and Dan imo, as classic silly and serious pairing, they bring out the best in each other, Joe is great though always knowledgeable

9

u/stv7 Toronto Blue Jays 29d ago

Caleb is by far the closest thing we have to Buck - he brings so much personality to the broadcasts but still mixes in some genuine analysis. I like Joe but I would be thrilled if Caleb went full time instead

6

u/BornNerd78 Toronto Blue Jays 28d ago

There was a sequence last night where Caleb was talking about his career batting line against Scherzer and Dan called him out on it. It was great banter.

I remember going to an Giants day game in 1996 - we were ass that year, playing some meaningless game against the Phillies and there were only a few thousand fans in Candlestick.

It was a long, boring game and at some point in the later innings a fan attached three balloons to a paper cup and sent it sailing across the stands. Suffice it to say, the balloon cup became the sole focus of the crowd's excitement for like two full innings. They even started tracking its journey from fan to fan on the jumbotron. I think it eventually fell to the field and of course everyone booed when the grounds crew inevitably removed it.

One of my fondest memories at that park.
