Relair's Mistake is a meme item, change my mind

The ability to polymorph into a wolf at will is...useless?

It's 2000 easy gold if you ask me

- The wolf is faster than a humanoid

  • The wolf can carry a lot. Has 18 STR, and if you have 18/XX, the XX gets carried to the wolf
  • The wolf has 2 attacks that hit as +1.
  • Offhand weapons can be used as the wolf! So 3 attacks, really. And with NO OFF HAND PENALTY
  • The wolf is immune to a lot of humanoid-specific spells, like hold person or charm person

forgot extended reach for positioning, so absolutely insanely good monk item.

I find it very useful to clerics.

Give it to Branwen or Viconia using Ashideena in off-hand and you can see your cleric having 3 APR instead of 1 APR with greater THACO.

This .

I use the cloak heavily on my solo monks run, the extra ApR from monks unarmed carries on to the wolf paws.

Put one of drizzt's scimitars in offhand and you're a very powerful frontliner

Wait what would that even look like. Im trying to imagine a wolf carrying a scimitar.

Don't think about it. Just accept it. Silly CRPG shenanigans.

+1

Also: Early game Rasaad makes good use of it.

Slightly useful on mages once their spells are exhausted and you’re sick of them sitting in back slinging pebbles-of-uselessness.

This is brilliant, I've learnt a lot here thank you.

Still useless to me, but interesting all the same.

When you've played this game over 500 times like one of us obsessed boomers, you try different stuff out. Self imposed challenges like a solo monk run, where these kinds of items shine

It can be extremely helpful if you have low strength. Load up on loot that would normally over encumber you, change into wolf form, and head back to town. That’s the only real use I’ve ever had for it.

It's a good weapon for monks. I also quite enjoyed using it on a Cleric of Lathander. It has a quirk of allowing you to dual wield with no penalty. I'd use it on Monks, Clerics and Thieves as extra melee damage and then sell it by the time you get to Baldur's Gate.

Ha, you are very wrong.

It's a very useful item in the early-mid game if bg1. Especially for a lot of solo playthroughs.

Especially for monk and various spellcasters

I put it on Xan every playthrough. Not that it makes him a melee beast, but there are some fights in the game where you just want to pile as many melee attacks from your party as possible. With his moonblade in the offhand in wolf form he gets better thac0 than in mainhand without being a wolf, plus also getting two wolf APR on top.

It's a good use for it IMO, it does have some value.

As you asked me to change your mind I’d say that it can’t be a meme item, because the game pre-dates social media and the modern phenomenon of memes. It is just an item that you don’t think is very good.

A meme is actually anything repeated or copied by someone else. You can have verbal memes like the Budweiser advert from 25 years ago.

Memes predate social media. There were plenty of memes floating around back in the late 90s. Probably before then too, but that is before my time.

Ancient Egyptians were known for donkey-dicking

We had caturday and demotivators, and whatever the hell was coming out of ebaums world and that cesspit that was the internet hate machine. Memes even the word didn't exist in the 90s

Don't forget about the GOAT, "All Your Base Are Belong to Us!"

u/Short-Shopping3197 1d ago

Yup, which is why specified ‘social media and the modern phenomenon of memes’ to differentiate it from earlier forms. The idea of ‘a meme weapon’ is heavily associated with the mass sharing of videogame clips through social media. I promise you as someone who was there, nobody talked about memes or meme weapons in the 90’s.

No. You just sound like a kid who isn't up to date on internet history who thinks memes are image macros that get shared on social media. You clearly said that it "can't be a meme" because the game "pre-dates social media." Just admit you were wrong.

It’s pretty obvious that OP was talking about ‘meme weapons’ in the modern internet sense, rather than the sense that Richard Dawkins meant it. Now get off and have a nap, you’re being unnecessarily rude.

1

u/Larson_McMurphy 23h ago

You have no idea what you are talking about.

Look I don’t know why you’re being like this. Memes and memetics as a more general idea about information and concepts spreading are of course a concept older than the internet, coined by Dawkins in 1976. The idea of a ‘meme weapon’, or a weapon in a video game which is underpowered but visually comical, so is used often in clips by streamers but isn’t useful for actual players was not around at the time of Baldurs Gate because it predicated on widespread video streaming allowed through social media.

It’s not deep, I don’t know why you’re getting all uppity about it.

"Meme weapon" is not a well defined concept. There is no page for it on Know Your Meme. It sounds like your concept of it is the result of original research or personal opinion.

In any case, in my experience meme weapons clearly predate social media. Back in the late 90s when we were all playing Golden Eye, the Klobb was a meme weapon because it was so shitty it was funny. No one would use it unless they had nothing better, or they were a much better player and were just messing with people.

Fucking hell, sure thing, whatever you like. Go off and bang on at someone else’s online comment now, I’m totally done.

I gave it to my totemic Druid who doesn't normally shape shift. Or you can. Give it to a mage for when they run out of spell slots and have an extra melee unit

u/gangler52 1d ago

I usually just put it on Neera so she can use it to turn back human if she accidentally polymorphs herself.

Why would anyone change your mind? You're correct, it's just whether you think the joke is funny or not.

1

u/Greyhand13 1d ago

Can you explain the joke? I didn't know there was one

u/MagicalGirlPaladin Cleric of Hitting People with Hammers 1d ago

You get to turn into a wolf.
