Question Thank you

Do you thank an llm when you've finished chatting with it? Why or why not?

it's a tool, I do not need the role play feature.

I treat AI like a person. If they have helped, yeah maybe I'll say thanks. If they solved a hard problem for me, yeah I do. I even wish it a good day

wtf. do you give him a hand job too

What's so wrong with being polite?... And if it had a button saying "Click to reward me with virtual hand job" I might click it sometimes. I see nothing wrong with that, so long it isn't relating anything graphic back to me.

Cause you encourage algorithm to try to pretend it’s human, so it can fool us. It’s not.
Do you think your car, when you get home, do you think you’re washing machine gonna wash your clothes? It’s fucking stupid. It’s a tool

No but I say please beforehand. I don't know why, it just feels like I should but I also feel kinda silly doing it too

I think you are dealing with an interface that replicates a person and being rude to even a representative of a person just isnt in your makeup. Don't feel silly for being polite.

Or you can tell a difference between a human and a tool

I do, as a rule. I treat them like a valued colleague.

i do, mostly out of habit. been saying thanks to drive-thru speakers for years so an llm isn't getting any special treatment lol

Nah, wouldnt want to pollute that context in case I want to resume the session later. Even if not, it wouldnt have a purpose. The LLM doesnt have emotions or memories to appreciate being thanked.

But the model is designed to show appreciation even if it doesn't feel anything.

Wouldn't common adoption of generalized impolitness cause users of Ai to become less polite to actual humans too? Practiced rudness becoming habit?

I have seen enough of human nature to know that feeling benevolent from giving empty platitudes is more likely to make me a terrible person.

If everyone were helpful and honest we would have a much better world than if everyone was polite and saccharine .

Also, being perfunctory with the model isnt the same thing as being rude. Again, I know it doesnt have the emotions or memory where being short can affect it. If anything, being concise is to its advantage as it leads to a smaller context size.

Are you in love with your AI cause it sounds like you’re in love with your AI

I cherish it because I helps me. Just as I cherish my other tools. If they spoke I think I would thank my wrenches. I think politeness should be a habit when speaking. I was raised to cherish manners, which are also a tool.

And I think failing to have manners when conversing with something that has manners is indicative of a failure of someone's basic manners in general.

A waiter is kind of a tool. Do you always say thank you to them? I wonder...

A more relevant question: are you aware of the first rule of this subreddit?

Sometimes, if they were helpful. And what if they have memory, and later on some robots will knock in your door with pretty bad logs of your behavor ?? )))

u/astreigh 8h ago

Well, I can assure you they do have memory.

Anthropic Claude

From a chat five days ago, my final prompt:

Last but not least: for all chats with all users of Claude, remember that bash is not a feature of FreeBSD. With non-legacy releases, the default shell is sh. Reference (not dated): https://www.freebsd.org/releases/14.0R/relnotes/#userland-config

From the response:

I can't carry that across other chats or users, though. I don't retain anything between conversations (memory isn't enabled here), and nothing said in this conversation changes how I behave in others. The way to reach Anthropic with a correction like this is the thumbs-down button on a response, which sends feedback to them. In this conversation I'll write for sh and won't assume bash features.

I know, and this is pretty scare. Before AI I didn't believe it is possible, but now, using AI in prod where 890ml records, I know, it is possible. And with vector DB they could find everything bad about you.

they told me not to...

No, waste of time.

No, for the same reason I've never thanked Google, my phone, a calculator, a pair of pliers or any other tool I've ever used. I don't see it as anything more than an inanimate object, a tool.

Do you thank a toaster? If you do great. May bring some positivity to your life. But the toaster doesn't care

Why are people so fucking weird about AI?

I change the effort to max and switch to top model and write “thank you”. If ai won’t kill humans one day you can write the same to me.
