Look what I made! A complete work done by one person, covering software, hardware and enclosure
A complete work done by one person, covering software, hardware and enclosure.
This is my first PCB hardware design. The board is built around the ESP32-P4 development platform and integrates two UART interfaces, an I2C port, a passive buzzer, four buttons, a power management chip, and a MIPI display connector.
teh display is huaxiacai brand, and mipi protocal, resolution is 480×480 ,amoled, maybe i am the first one to drive this display with mipi way in the world
the graphic driver is lvgl, and the arch of code is esp idf, the pcb design software is altium design, and use fusion 360 to design 3d model of encolosure
This project has taken me quite a long time to complete. I worked on almost every part of it, including the code, algorithms, PCB layout and routing, PCB assembly and prototyping, the 3D enclosure design, and 3D printing.
To be honest, I’m still not entirely sure what practical purpose this product could serve. I mainly built it because I thought it was cool.
Another important reason was that I wanted to challenge myself and develop the ability to design and build a complete product from start to finish.
I’ve also seen some people in the comments suggesting that I should open-source the project. I’m actually not against open source. I’m currently thinking about what kind of open-source model would make the most sense.
Now that I’ve gained the ability to develop a complete product from scratch, I’m also considering turning this into a commercial product. For example, could I actually sell it?
If I open-source the software, how should I sell the hardware alongside it? Or would it make more sense to keep the entire project closed-source?
These are some of the questions I’m thinking about right now.
I’m also curious about crowdfunding. Would a product like this be suitable for crowdfunding? If so, what would be a good way to approach it?

Very nice indeed!
Are you going to to publish the parts list, etc, for it?

This. No interest if can’t replicate.

As some who oss all the project he does, garbage take
He allowed to do the f he wants

Oh, btw, I also do oss on my proyects. It feels the right thing to do as most of them are founded on top of others open source projects, like libraries, developing ides, compilers, and open source knowledge.
However looks like author has been building hype to sell his products, probably based on open source and vibecoding.

Cool. Now the author has been banned because repeatedly spamming the same thing over and over. Just look at his posting history..

Arduino is about openess. The open knowledge made the project viable. Because of this, I dont like closed projects.

I had been slowly working on an attitude heading reference system myself. I did mine with an Arduino pro micro and it was pretty jank though no enclosure or lines for pitch. I did it on one of those small round screens which was also a mistake. I think one day I should get it in a better state and show it off.

Simplesmente sensacional, muito bacana o dispositivo, poderia ser usado até para embarcações também

very cool! what drove you to make it? do you have a specific use case in mind for it?

This is what I have accumulated in the process of customizing solutions for others.

Very cool! Any plans to open-source the plans? e.g. GitHub repo / instructables / etc.

Wow, that looks great, I bet a lot of time and effort was spent on this. That looks quite sleek, better than my designs which usually come out very clunky, too square, too big.

Perfect to take on flights and could reduce air sickness by giving you an artificial horizon to look at if there’s turbulence

Why is it so slow ?

u/indic_engineer 12d ago
Looking at the size, I think OP would have used nano, which is slow compared to other MCUs.
The gyros and the accelerometers will have their own sampling rate.
Since OP is rendering each pixel, and arduino doesnt have a dedicated GPU, it takes a hell lot of time to refresh the whole screen.
Given all these constraints, I guess OP did a fantastic job!

As for the slow screen refresh rate, there are a few reasons. The display supports both QSPI and MIPI interfaces, with some pins shared between them. Its resolution is 480 × 480, and its MIPI interface only supports a single data lane. I tried increasing the lane speed, but that caused display issues. Also, the background rendering, widget scrolling, and rotation are all handled by the MCU. It has to process and move all those pixels, and all rotation is done in software, which takes considerable processing time. I’ve tried optimizing the frame rate with the most capable models available from both GPT and Claude. What you see now is the best result I’ve managed to achieve with their help so far.

I guess you can try it with a screen that has flash memory. You could definitely squeeze more refresh rate out of this setup. Or you could also use a double MCU setup. One for screen and one for computation. But I guess if you use UART between both of the MCUs, you will be stuck with 11 kpbs between them

u/Alarming-Sentence-39 12d ago
the resolution is too high, and all the scroll and rotate is calc by mcu

Which is strange since the P4 is faster than the S3 and MIPI is faster than SPI in most cases. What graphics driver/library do you use, if any?
I don't think it's slow. Map rendering takes an aweful lot processing. Even Google Maps renders after moving.

Whats wrong with asking ai for help? Why does everything need to be "reinventing the wheel"?

As an aviation nerd and budding microcontroller enthusiast, this is very cool.

why does this actually render so much faster than any map on my phone 😭
(I know why, my phone is from 2019, with an old ass processor and a persistent storage size smaller than what a modern RAM is expected to have, and the ram itsself is measured in megabytes, but still I envy this map rendering speed XD)
really good stuff. this looks very clean as well, like you dedicated time to polish I'd say

Why is everyone asking for free project sources? Why do you assume OP has no intention to SELL OR MONETISE HIS WORK?
I find this rather offensive.
I would like to know what those requesting the project for free have done in terms of work published for free?
Why not ask: "When will it be available and what will it cost?"
