Look what I made! Onewheel + WS2812 + ESP8266

Making my Onewheel more colorful with WS2812 and esp8266 :D Controlled via web interface but I’m considering switching to esp32 to add Bluetooth since the Onewheel board also communicates via BT. In the final version the electronics will be attached to the bottom of the front footpad.

Looks good. One warning: bolt everything down, vibration WILL shake connectors loose. I've had an SD card rattle out on a drone mid-flight and crash the kernel. Don't learn that one the hard way.

Was that the shooting slot or the raspberry style slot that’s just friction fit? I would expect the shooting slot to hold. I think the connectors should be fine here, but if they rattle out I’ll just dip some special sauce on them so they hold in place :D silicon sauce that is. What I’m worried about is the moisture, might need to look into conformal coating.

I would expect the shooting slot to be worse. The RPi2 had that type and it had a lot of failures where it would stop locking so it would never hold on to your card again, which is why they moved to the friction fit. I'd put some hot glue on places like that, just to be safe.

First off, dope! I dig it!

Are you gonna put a protective rail around the LEDs? Cuz the moment the board rolls over, it’ll smash them. Nothing ever lasts intact on the side of the board for very long lol.

Also, when you say “under the footpad” do you mean under the actual footpad, in the space between the tire and controller? Or attached to the bottom of the bumper underneath the board? Have you considered just attaching it to the top of the fender?

Wow, this is seriously cool! I'm really curious how you're sensing orientation — did you add a separate IMU, or is it something else? Have you looked into any ESP32 boards that already have an IMU built-in? Also, how are you powering the WS2812 strip, and what driver/module are you using for it?
