Look, I'm all for thinking up things to make projects 1 step more complicated to continue learning, but this is reductive. Essentially everything an Arduino does could be done with a dedicated hardware circuit and zero programming if you really wanted to.

You just need latches and such. The biggest community that does this kind of stuff is probably the Redstone people in Minecraft, but it can be done with real circuits too.
