Quick anatomy study.

I’ve been wanting to do this kind of portrait for a while, just for the sake of sharing more artwork by completing a sculpt in a short time.

I also wanted to use Blender again for quick ‘n easy renders, since it’s been a couple years that I’ve only used Unreal Engine 5 to present my characters.
The stylized hair was made with curves and placed manually inside Blender.

I designed and sculpted this 1.5m insect creature entirely in ZBrush, then turned the digital sculpt into a physical creature; printed in PLA and Resin, painted with acrylics.

I'm struggling to get anything good at all. I try to get the proportion of the head as close as possible, but I don't know how to add forms like the nose etc. It always end up ruining the base.

The eyes for example, I don't know how to make it flow nicely with the rest of the head. (I added the eyelids to try and get a better idea of how it'd look, bad idea).

I'd really like some advice because I always feel like I end up ruining the little bit of work I've done so far.

I'm not sure where I should make the cut around the waist.

If I split it where the fur starts, the connection would be too thin, and I'm worried that the shape of the waist would make it difficult to assemble securely.

But if I cut through the middle of the fur or somewhere around the middle of the torso, I'm worried that the cut line will be really noticeable.

What's the best way to approach the split here?

One of my favorite pieces. I really wish more people were interested in learning how to design this type of busts. Most of my students are mostly interested in game development lol
