[Monthly AI discussion thread] Concerned about AI? Have thoughts to share on how AI may affect the writing community? Voice your thoughts on AI in the monthly thread!

In an effort to limit the number of repetitive AI posts while still allowing for meaningful discussion from people who choose to participate in discussions on AI, we're posting monthly threads dedicated exclusively to AI and its uses, ethics, benefits, consequences, and broader impacts.

Open debate is encouraged, but please follow these guidelines:

Stick to the facts and provide citations and evidence when appropriate to support your claims.

Respect other users and understand that others may have different opinions. The goal should be to engage constructively and make a genuine attempt at understanding other people's viewpoints, not to argue and attack other people.

Disagree respectfully, meaning your rebuttals should attack the argument and not the person.

All other threads on AI should be reported for removal, as we now have a dedicated thread for discussing all AI related matters, thanks!

Feedback requested Does this hook actually 'hook' you?

Post image

This is page one-chapter one of my debut novel. In other words, this is my hook. Is it actually engaging? What are all the improvements I can make for it?

My approach was to introduce the character's core belief aspect of his internal conflict straight away.

Mine was molar pregnancy because I was trying to make a grotesque baby-fetus monster. I suggest to not look it up if you can't stomach it, it's not super gorey, but definitely the worst thing I had to look up for my work.

Posted when I hit 40k back in March. Then I got stuck for a while, but here we are. I alternate between loving my little baby and thinking she's the stupidest waste of time. Tonight I love her.

Question Does this happen to anyone else?

Post image

I've spent almost a month planning what I'm going to write, the plot twists, the characters, everything. I had it all perfectly planned out in my head, and then, right when I started writing, everything sounded so cringe. It was horrible.

Thank you for everyone’s advice. You helped me get out of my head and onto the page. I wrote about 3 pages and I could hardly sleep as my head was full of ideas! But I’ve started and I love it!! I think I’ve found my writing style or at least for now.

Thank you everyone! I can’t wait to see where I go with this!

Question How many characters is a max number for it to be cozy?

• Upvotes

Ignore every other factor of book being cozy. Lets focus just on the characters here. How much characters ruins the cozy vibe? Or maybe its not about a number but more how they are written? What number of reacuring characters gives you the vibes of a community and which ones make you fell dissconected?

Question Does writing on Reddit count as "daily writing?"

No doubt this will be circlejerk fodder and this may be a silly tongue in cheek post, but fk it.

There's been plenty of mention that "writing daily" doesn't necessarily mean working on one's story. It could mean writing in a journal, it could mean writing an outline, it could mean brainstorming ideas for a story...

...but what about writing here on Reddit? Does this count for "writing daily"? If it does, then I'm a prolific writer across many genres. I even have multiple pen names (if you consider pen names "permanently banned accounts").

I was just curious if arguing about politics, whining about how difficult life is, talking about whether Tony Soprano really died at the end...is this writing every day? I truly hope so because if it does then it means my measly 250 words a day that are devoted to an actual story are nothing compared to my career on Reddit.

Question Would switching names throw people off too badly

I have a character that has 2 given names, and he has an identity crisis over them, and I’m debating on how to approach it. On one hand, I want to address him depending on his state of mind, but as title says, I’m afraid it’s gonna throw people off. On the other hand, I can avoid addressing him by name, and his name(s) is only mentioned by the characters interacting with him, depending on what the character knows him by. But since he’s the main character and pretty much occupies the narrative, I’d have a really hard time not addressing him. How would you write this?

Any new / aspiring / veterans in the writing game, take the time to listen to any Alen Moore interview. I'm just going to leave this video here that popped up on my feed this morning. He's a very inspirational and creative individual that has a lot to say not just only with writing but other mediums too within creative industry.

Feedback requested Opening a fantasy/scifi book is hard! Feedback please

This is my debut novel (hopefully in the future). And I've been avoiding the first page for a while now, have like 7 chapters and no first page. So last night I came up with this, and I think it sums up without oversharing the lore of the world. Does that seem interesting enough to keep reading the following page if you pick it up in a bookstore to see what that's about?

*English is not my first language. I've been writing in my language and then translating each chapter. I'm fluent in English, so it is not hard, but grammar mistakes can still happen.*

Question A character gets introduces halfway through the book, how do I make them feel like a main character?

So my story is, essentially, a "rescue the princess" trope. Princess gets introduced halfway through the story, but by that point we (the characters and the readers) have realised she isn't some damsel in distress who needs to be saved, but rather a dangerous witch that has destroyed her former kingdom because they locked her up and neglected her, and she took her revenge.

Now, there are two main characters already and they have a sibling-like bond. Any tips on how I can get the princess/witch to join the two main characters as a third part, and having her be as likeable as the two main characters? There will be a relationship between one of the protagonists and the witch, but I want her to feel organic and just part of the group.

Any tips? I know Shrek did it well but any other ideas?

Feedback requested I have too many “I”s

I’m writing a fictional horror psychological story, and I understand coming from writing about the main characters struggles and events that happen in the story that I’ve noticed there’s way too many “I’s” in the story. Are there alternatives or other ways so the reader doesn’t get bored of it?

Question Writing everyday?

Hello. I am feeling very self conscious about posting on a writer's subreddit but here it goes. I'm part of a few writers groups etc. I have never had the balls to actually finish a piece cause my brain is a mess.

However, i see a lot of writers talk about writing everyday and I guess my question is, what is everyone writing everyday? Cause honestly I have no ideas in my head, I can't finish a piece for the life of me but I really want to understand what my everyday writing is supposed to look like.

Having said all of this, i do understand every writers' routine is different but I'd love to hear all of your thoughts. Thank you in advance.
