Screenshot Saying goodbye to Triss sucks!

Whenever I play Witcher 3, I play twice in a row. In the first playthrough, I choose Yen to romance because I do somewhat agree that it's more lore-accurate. But in the second playthrough, I choose Triss because WHY IS THIS SCENE SO SAD?

You said goodbye, I’ll say hello this second play through 😉

Chose both at the same time for "best romance ending" ;)

u/Due_Interview960 9h ago

Oh definitely, nothing beats that ending 😁

u/MundaneMoments 9h ago

I wanted to romance her, but why on earth would the option be asking her to stay??
Why would I ask her to stay in a place where she’s hunted for her life, in a place that I’m not going to stay, right when she’s in the middle of saving a bunch of people‘s lives??

Yeah, I definitely kissed her and romanced her while I was in Novigrad and knew nothing about the lore, but even without thinking about Yen, it was still a no-brainer to let her go and fulfill her purpose. It felt like a perfect ending to that part of the story.

The lore says Geralt and Yen died in the Rivian Pogrom years ago. It’s your game. If you want to romance Triss you can do so without stressing cause ultimately the games aren’t a part of Sapkowski’s canon no matter whom you romance, so it’s a moot point. But even so, it’s your game, if Yen makes you happy, take that path again, if Triss makes you happy then go that way. The game is built to respect both choices equally.

Anyways, good luck man, if you do a Triss playthrough I hope it brings you joy like it did for me and many others.

I would still argue, that even in the context of the games, but Witcher 3 especially, choosing Yen makes more sense.

Obviously still up to the player, but Triss pretty much took advantage of Geralt’s amnesia to get with him in the first place. Not to mention the story spends more time with Yen and their family reunion (Ciri as well) is a big aspect of the story that works better if you decide to be with Yen.

I don’t buy that Geralt, after getting all his memories back and after all the shit he has been through with Yen, would choose Triss who he was with for a comparatively short period and under questionable circumstances.

7

u/Jgomez306 5h ago

The thing is the Amnesia was just a plot device to essentially revert Geralt to a somewhat blank slate. Let’s not forget that dandelion Geralts supposed best friend never mentioned yen or Ciri even knowing Geralt had amnesia. Not fully defending triss here what she did was also messed up but she’s not the only culprit but if we’re going to blame her for not telling Geralt then blame also goes to dandelion,Zolton,Vesamir,Lambert,Eskil

7

u/I_Speak_For_The_Ents 9h ago

The amnesia was a hamfisted way to achieve things narratively imo. None of the characters actions make sense in the context of Getalt being an amnesiac.

14

u/Low_Mouse_197 8h ago

Yeah certainly not in the first two games. Makes no sense why Zoltan or Dandelion don’t mention many of these things to Geralt.

12

u/I_Speak_For_The_Ents 8h ago

And it's so briefly brought up in Witcher 3. Like "Sorry about all the amnesia stuff" "no problem" "great, anyway..."

I would still argue, that even in the context of the games, but Witcher 3 especially, choosing Yen makes more sense.

No, it plainly doesn’t.  I’ll say this, it’s frankly pathetic how much so many members of Team Yen feel the compulsion to enforce their nonsensical orthodoxy onto others… much less in a choice driven RPG game set years after the books, oh and on a flimsy premise of “lore accuracy” that collapses if you think about it hard enough. Again, if you want to romance Yen cause you want that for your Geralt then go ahead, but don’t think you have a right to police the legitimacy of others’ choices.

Obviously still up to the player, but Triss pretty much took advantage of Geralt to get with him in the first place. It’s a bit gross.

Yen enslaved Geralt in the first book, she turns abusive in the third game if he refuses to apologize for his amnesia… conversely, Triss took accountability for her actions in the first two games and didn’t repeat her actions. Also, Yen is still reckless and volatile in Skellige while Triss is actively saving lives in Skellige. I don’t want to realities it beyond this point, but you don’t have the moral high ground you think you do.

Which is weird because her characterization in the Witcher 3 is that of a very nice person. It’s all a bit of a mess.

Yeah, sure, feel that way about Triss’s characterization all you like, but stop acting like Yennefer is any better and like you have a right to scold others for their choices.

Edit: response to modified points below

Not to mention the story spends more time with Yen and their family reunion (Ciri as well) is a big aspect of the story that works better if you decide to be with Yen.

Right… except, you do realize Geralt and Yen don’t have to be together to parent Ciri, right? Ciri is a grown woman who is more than happy for Geralt when he explains why he picked Triss.

I don’t buy that Geralt, after getting all his memories back and after all the shit he has been through with Yen, would choose Triss who he was with for a comparatively short period and under questionable circumstances.

Right… except, Geralt’s whole relationship with Yen was under a djinn’s binding of their fates and getting back his memory doesn’t necessarily mean he has to go back to Yen. His memories coming back don’t reset him to factory settings, that’s not how it works. In fact, the game goes out of its way to let you end it with Yen and break the spell for this reason.

Who’s scolding anybody right now except you?

I started this convo with nothing but support for people choosing whatever they want to. Someone tried to resort to reflexive moral shaming rhetoric as a tactic to delegitimize others’ choices. What I did was merely call that reflex and behaviour out.

18

u/PCBuilderCat 9h ago

Ok but the person you specifically replied to did none of that lol

Yes he very much did, especially given the context of OP’s comment and why I said what I said before he replied to me.

Okay buddy… but uh, you’re the one who keeps responding to me lol.

All I did was offer my opinion and reasoning. Didn’t demean anyone who might disagree.

Yeah… sure you didn’t, you only reflexively demeaned a choice as inherently inferior despite the context of the post making it in bad faith… then when confronted went out of your way to try to isolate and pathologize the person who called you out.

I find it amusing how you keep taking about how I’m “crazy” or “embarrassing”… and yet you keep replying, fascinating, isn’t it?

Lol I’m not “Team Yen” dude, this isn’t twilight. I’m just giving my opinion on what I think works best in the context of the story. You can feel free to disagree obviously.

Not once did I “scold” anyone for having a different opinion. Touch some grass.

3

u/BigBossSnakeEater64 Team Triss "Man of Taste" 10h ago

Lol I’m not “Team Yen” dude, this isn’t twilight.

Okay, whatever you say… that doesn’t absolve your reflexive attempt to delegitimize someone else’s point.

I’m just giving my opinion on what I think works best in the context of the story. You can feel free to disagree obviously. Right… you’re now trying to retroactively look more reasonable than your original bad faith framing sounded… but no, it’s not just an “opinion”.

Not once did I “scold” anyone for having a different opinion.

You referred to it as less lore accurate… which okay, is an opinion… however even if on its own that doesn’t mean much, you then paired it with deliberately dismissive rhetoric and bad faith one-sided moral panic to make the choice seem morally corrupted.

Touch some grass.

After you ;)

13

u/PCBuilderCat 9h ago

Christ dude you’re doing way too much, the other guy is literally just saying what he thinks makes more sense to him why are you trying to make this into something it’s not?

2

u/BigBossSnakeEater64 Team Triss "Man of Taste" 9h ago

Christ dude you’re doing way too much, the other guy is literally just saying what he thinks makes more sense to him why are you trying to make this into something it’s not?

Because that’s not what he was implying, especially when he used the same regurgitated points that tries to delegitimize the choice reflexively. In the context of OP’s post you can see why it reads that way.

3

u/PCBuilderCat 9h ago

And what are you doing if not also reacting reflexively to delegitimise their choice?

I’ve been here since 2015 and the original Triss or Yen wars and guess what? Both are correct and one trying to ‘delegitimise’ the other is stupid. Both have flaws, both have merits, both make sense.

Just let people choose who they want that goes for you and anyone else damn

-1

u/BigBossSnakeEater64 Team Triss "Man of Taste" 9h ago

And what are you doing if not also reacting reflexively to delegitimise their choice?

Because I didn’t start this thread like that. As much as I loathe Yen, I literally told OP that he should choose whomever makes him happy. I wasn’t the one who came in swinging this time.

I’ve been here since 2015 and the original Triss or Yen wars and guess what? Both are correct and one trying to ‘delegitimise’ the other is stupid. Both have flaws, both have merits, both make sense.

It very much isn’t a “both sides” issue… Team Triss almost always just wants to appreciate their character and enjoy their preferences. Team Yen is the faction where some feel the pathological need to delegitimize choosing Triss based on the books and this absurdly hypocritical moral panic. Team Triss has always had to be on the defensive till relatively recently when people started reading the books more closely and interrogating the Team Yen orthodoxy. That dismissive Team Yen enforced pattern is exactly what played out here, despite OP and others admitting that listening to it actively harmed my experience. At this point we’re just going in circles, you’ll either see my point or you won’t.

Just let people choose who they want that goes for you and anyone else damn

I’m not the one who summoned a horde, all I did was call out a pattern for what it was.

9

u/PCBuilderCat 8h ago

I can see this isn’t going anywhere, like that other commenter said you’re fighting ghosts and inventing arguments. I’d take 50 of this so called ‘team Yen faction’ over whatever the fuck you’re doing.

Hey man, I just wanna say you’re not crazy, you’ve explained yourself well, and I don’t know why people are down voting you.
If they reply to the post “feel free to choose anything you want“ saying “here is why choosing Yen is the right choice” they are saying there is a right and wrong choice, whether or not they meant to. They are not just arguing who they personally like more, they are making a bigger statement about other people choosing differently.
But I’m talking to you because I don’t think the other people in this thread have the capacity to understand that.

Hey man, I just wanna say you’re not crazy, you’ve explained yourself well, and I don’t know why people are down voting you.

Because apparently holding people accountable for their rhetoric necessitates a horde come for me.

If they reply to the post “feel free to choose anything you want“ saying “here is why choosing Yen is the right choice” they are saying there is a right and wrong choice, whether or not they meant to. They are not just arguing who they personally like more, they are making a bigger statement about other people choosing differently.

Exactly, that is yes… that’s what I was saying.

But I’m talking to you because I don’t think the other people in this thread have the capacity to understand that.

I’m grateful for that… but honestly, I’m used to it. This happens every once in a while where the hivemind sends a whole army to swarm me. That being said, what really saddens me is thinking about how many people they have driven off with exactly this kind of behaviour, where if you call out one of them for enforcement behaviour or for condescension… suddenly they have to swarm you to try and drown you out. It says much more about them than it does me or anyone else they try this tactic on.

Anyways, thanks for your comment, all the best man.

The real world is going to eat you up if you get this upset over a very mild and non-confrontational disagreement.

Nah, I’m fine… in fact holding people accountable for their words and actions is how we have a functioning society to begin with. And buddy… you think this is about me? No, it’s about all the people who see rhetoric meant to demote the legitimacy of many people’s natural preferences and make them feel ashamed for a choice in a choice based RPG game. That’s pretty messed up and I’m well within my rights to call it out.

9

u/ReifiedSimulation 9h ago

You're not doing anything except illustrating that you're not able to disagree with someone without engaging in histrionic interpretations about their intent.

”Whenever I play Witcher 3, I play twice in a row. In the first playthrough, I choose Yen to romance because I do somewhat agree that it's more lore-accurate. But in the second playthrough, I choose Triss because WHY IS THIS SCENE SO SAD?”  The person I was responding to was using the exact kind of rhetoric that ruins people’s experiences like that by pressuring them into falsifying their preferences and not enjoying the game as intended. If this nuance flies over your head, that’s your problem.

12

u/ReifiedSimulation 9h ago

No he's not. You're weirdly imputing normative intentions upon what they're saying because you seem very emotionally unstable and upset that someone disagrees with your opinion on #TeamTriss.

What do you call reflexively deligitimizing someone else’s choices and trying to introduce moral shame into the equation that doesn’t stick?

Dude you are getting this worked up and using this kind of language over the  choice of an imaginary girl you can pretend sleep with.

Right… it totally couldn’t be because OP and many others have spent the better part of a decade being told their preferences make them a lesser fan or is a moral and literary failing… it’s not like I could’ve been talking about how the choice is treated itself. Totally, yeah this is just because I’m so sad about Triss lol.

No one here is agreeing with you. No one here is on your side.

That isn’t true… but even if it was, it’s telling you resort to that.

We’re all concerned about your mental health though.

Your concern trolling is as obvious as your cliche quips… especially when you try to isolate the individuals you’re allegedly “concerned about” by telling them “no one is on their side”… seriously, at least try to make it convincing.

This. I picked the option to say goodbye to her and when she left I could feel the emptiness, and geralts face said it all at that moment so I reloaded a previous save and chose her. That was after I did all of kaer morhen and turned down yennefer, which i kinda felt bad for her at that moment, but don't regret it at all.

And that's the best answer anyone could've given to someone, doesn't matter who others pick, everyone's making different choices and that's what's about being an rpg in the first place.

I wound up fucking it up with all of them and living alone with Ciri visiting at times and, honestly, it felt appropriate.

But yeah, this scene killed me.

12

u/RakkZakk 8h ago

Will always choose Triss.
Having gone through some very toxic relationships one scene in the game always really gets to me.
Its when Ciri asks Geralt why he choose Triss if you do so and the answer is so striking:
Geralt:"With Yen it was fight after fight, lots of arguments, drama... Not saying it was bad, but..."
Ciri:"But what?"
Geralt:"Got to be exhausting. With Triss, its not. I finally feel... harmony. A calm. Feeling like things are the way they're supposed to be."

Yea maybe in the books Yen is meant for Geralt and Triss is a different character.
But in the Game Triss is exactly what i would wish for - a person that is caring not just about herself and her extended family but for others. Shes kind and soft. A lovely partner that tends to Geralt.

4

u/Jgomez306 5h ago

I really do feel that the developers seem to really favor Triss

Firstly unless you have read the novels you wouldn’t really understand the connection between yen and Geralt especially in the opening

Secondly yen comes across as not the nicest towards Geralt when you first meet her

Thirdly since most people haven’t read the books and mostly came over from the Witcher 2 they already have a understanding of the relationship between triss and Geralt

Lastly the game really pushes you towards triss by having her be in some pretty romantic scenes while also treating Geralt much nicer than yen
And if you go by how your supposed to go you’d run and spend time with triss in novigrad while you don’t meet up with yen again until much later.

2

u/Maximum_Elephant_953 1h ago

I really do feel that the developers seem to really favor Triss.

And yet, Yen got twice as many love scenes than Triss.

2

u/Skalgrin 1h ago

Yennefer aint exactly a nice person to Geralt even in most of the books to be honest + their love is supposedly based on a wish to genie. So frankly Geralt cheesed himself in by magic more powerful than any wizard can master and I shall rise an eybrow on Triss manipulating him post memory loss?

Yennefer (and Geralt as a couple) gets points for Ciri tho - to be objective.

-5

u/fred_derps 4h ago

I’ve done both and I get Geralt/Yen is basically canon but I simply enjoy Geralt and Triss together so much more

5

I think you can just skip Yen’s quest and romance Triss. That way you don’t have to do the rough breakup with Yen scene.

-4

u/Emynewen 5h ago

The only sad part about this scene to me us that I can't be really mean to her... I hate Triss, I always hated Triss. And it has nothing to do with the books or the previous games, I had never heard of it the first time I played the witcher 3. I just cannot stand that girl. I think it is creepy that she calls Ciri "sister" while wanting to fuck Geralt. I think she is creepy for taking advantage of Geralt amnesia, she is manipulative pretending to be drunk to try to be flirty with Geralt (considering how fast she is suddenly sober she had to ve faking it). When I see her I just think she is a pathetic "pick me". She literally makes me wish she would exist irl so I could hurt her.

No hate toward people who like her though ! :) I only thought it was funny that people think this scene is sad when all I can think of during this part is "are we done now ?"

Do the people in this subreddit hate Triss? I mean, Yen can treat Geralt like a doormat and it's all fine, while Triss is kinder and more pleasant and people despise that? It doesn't make sense.
