I'm obviously not an engineer and all but why is glass used more than acrylics?

Acrylics are useful in certain situations, but they are prone to wear, scratches, and they fade over time. Glass is durable, scratch resistant, and exudes a sense of finish and quality...if you dont do anything to break it lol
