is the hate about Ubuntu overrated?
I love Ubuntu and canonical but it kinda makes me feel bad seeing that people hate it, is really that like everyone says?

I’m an online student, and I’m finally taking the courses that I needed towards my IT management/cybersecurity career. This is my first week of ITT, and in the instructions that we have, it is to use our school’s cloud VM to install Ubuntu & Python3. I’m not tech-savvy, and I don’t know how to troubleshoot things on my Mac laptop. Our professor wants us to download these servers or programs and take screenshots, but my Ubuntu keeps crashing and tells me that I have an error when I properly installed everything, as well as the pillow for storage. Is there any way someone could help me with this because I’ve been stuck on it for the past two days and I’m already towards the last part of the assignment, but I can’t figure out what to do after this. I already installed Python and Ubuntu on my school’s VM.. I followed all the steps that he first told us to do, and it seems like it’s still not working properly. TIA.

I moved to ubuntu 26.04 2 days ago, and I've noticed that I have issues installing ppa repositories. I also noticed that I am unable to open launchpad on the browser, it simply times out.
I just ordered Dell PV14255 Ryzen 5 220. This Laptop is according Canonical, Ubuntu certified with this configuration. I know that some of those Laptops are shipped with Ubuntu. But mine will be shipped with Windows. There is a Ubuntu image on Dell support website for this Laptop. Should i use this Dell image or one from Canonical website. Thanks

Morning everyone. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS. I downloaded the image from https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop I installed it without issues on my Gigabyte laptop.
My desktop is a whole other story. My hardware:
Asrock A620AI, 7600X, 3060 12gb, 32GB DDR5, 512GB SK Hynix Nvme
This is the errors I am getting:

What I tried to fix it:
Downloaded again from the Ubuntu site and reflash it on 2 different USB drives, 2 different NVME drives in an enclosure. Same errors. I also flashed it to the internal NVME boot drive.
BIOS settings changed to secure boot disabled.
Connecting an ethernet cable. Disconnecting the ethernet cable.
Setting nomodeset on the GRUB screen
What I'm currently trying:
I'm using Gemini AI to try and figure this out. It thinks it's the installation media or secure boot.
Does anyone have any clue what I need to do? My guess is some stupid BIOS setting. I'm thinking of just clearing the BIOS and trying again.

Guys please help me, im trying to install ubuntu onto HP 620 thats failing to boot, it shows me the windows error with the option to run windows normally and to run a system repair, either of which dont work, the repair just freezes with the cursor on the screen, and the other option just shows me the windows start up logo then boots again. So i made the post to ask if its possible to install ubuntu from the bios or repair windows or am i just cooked?

Hyper-V Enhanced Session Mode (ESM) doesn't work for me on the new Ubuntu installation: the pointer doesn't land exactly where I put it (compared with mouse's normal behavior), guest resolution won't match the host, and clipboard redirection does nothing. Same on 24.04.5 and 26.04.1.
What does work is a different RDP stack (22.04 LTS), but getting there isn't documented:
- xrdp: the stock instructions assume ~/.xsession and startwm.sh. Ubuntu's own package overrides that with startubuntu.sh and EnableUserWindowManager=0, and if your sesman.ini doesn't match, the session starts and dies immediately. Nothing in the docs mentions this.
Is there a documented, supported way to get a working RDP session on Ubuntu under Hyper-V now that ESM is the default and unreliable? I only got there by diffing sesman.ini between two machines (the working one and the newly installed).
Worth noting the broken clipboard makes this harder to troubleshoot than it looks. Without host-to-guest clipboard you can't paste a command from a guide into the VM, can't copy your config out to post it, and can't paste logs into a question.
There are workarounds: I used remote file transfer to move text in and out on one of the VMs, but they're several steps where a working clipboard is zero. So every round of diagnosis costs far more than it should, and the bug removes the tools you'd normally use to report it.

I upgraded my 24.04 LTS to 26.04 LTS threw the official installer and during the installation process from it didn't show any errors, i removed all the "unneeded" packages in the installation and i deleted them, and after all of it it told me to restart
Now users are not showing up on my login screen

Buona giornata

I'm looking for a theme very similar to the retro aesthetic of older GNOME versions, but I haven't been able to find one. Does anyone know of any?

After upgrading to Ubuntu 26.04, the icons in the app grid (the "Show Apps" screen) became noticeably smaller than before, with a lot of empty space around them. I'd like to get the larger icons back.
Only the app grid is affected. The dock, system UI, fonts, and window sizes all look normal, so I don't think this is a general scaling problem.

This what it looked like when you strip down Ubuntu down to only 300MB.
This is a Ubuntu distro I made, where it doesn't use any Window manager or display server, like Wayland or X11. Everything here renders straight from framebuffer.
