Gameposting Pretend it’s 2006 as you are in the cold waiting for a PS3
So lately I was looking to go back in time to pretend I am at a time period where the PS3 is not quite ready for launch, but it’s almost there.
Like what I am trying to say is that I wanted to look back at that particular era of gaming to figure out what made people interested in wanting to get the system as I know it’s not quite 20 years old yet, but it’s just that I was curious on what made people back then get one since it had no games available, and it was really expensive to buy again during launch date.

As someone who got the first 40GB-versions (A white one in fact.), it was more of the fact that the PS3 actually had more interesting games for me than the Xbox 360 at the time, as I simply saw the Xbox being way too much focused on shooters such as Gears of War-series* and Halo-series, and which got further amplified with sports and other U.S-centric media along with the Kinect-camera promotion a couple of years later.
The PS3 simply had a more interesting library for me back then in 2007, and where I mainly played launch titles such as Heavenly Sword by Ninja Theory (And one of the first games that introduced me to the SIXAXIS-motion control gimmick.), Insomniac's Tools of Destruction, that strange Folklore-game, as well as Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and later on having a decent set of third-party games on my PS3, where I even played sub-par versions of Fallout: New Vegas, Dragon Age: Origins and Red Dead Redemption and remember having a really good time with those games.
The next year by 2008, the PS3-exclusives started to ramp up, with games like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Valkyrie Chronicles and Little Big Planet, as well as re-releases of previously 360-exclusive games being added to the PS3, such as Eternal Sonata or in 2010 with Mass Effect 2.
I never really got the sense that the PS3 had no games, but I did realise that I was also in the minority among my social circles; I wanted mainly great singleplayer-experiences, and did not engage much online and multiplayer that was really popular among the console-crowds (Hence the large amount of added multiplayer-modes at the time to even singleplayer-centric games.). It is only in my later adult years nowadays that I play mainly a lot more multiplayer-games (Currently Final Fantasy XIV for the past 11 years and recently going back to Overwatch.). My tastes were simply different back then, and I simply found the PS3 having more games suited for me than the other platforms.

That was a really good writeup you gave on the console since I was interested in learning about what made people want to purchase the console early on as I recall hearing how there were some issues at launch. (E.g the system was very difficult to program games on)

The latter issue was true; granted, not what I myself perceived much, as the PS3 was the only current-gen console that I possessed, so I didn't had much perceived difference outside online console wars-dicourse, but it was true that games such as Dragon Age: Origins or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim had memory-leak issues that made the games drag down the longer you played along with other technical hurdles that made PS3 difficult for developers to optimise for. It wasn't much of a problem in DA:O or other longer games that often had a set ending to play around with, but became ab it problametic in TES-games or Fallout with long loading times. At the same time, the PS3 and 360-consoles was still in the HDD-storage era, so things like super-fast loading times through SSD that the current gen-consoles of the PS5 is having was simply not available for most gamers back then.
But I didn't care much for frames or loading speeds at the time, and my eyes more or less got adjusted to the sub-standard of 30 FPS; I was a different kind of gamer back then when my standards was different as well, as I still remember finishing Witcher 2 at around 11-21 FPS on my MacBook, and any advancement of increasing FPS was made by tilting the camera to the skies to reduce the amount of assets and textures loading.
The only, really cranky issue I ran into was actually more due to a bug that simply never got patched up: introducing The Elder Scrolls IV: Game of the Year-edition for the PS3, where there is a bug that makes it impossible to get the cure for vampirism due to the NPC giving it to you refuses to accept the 2x Bloodgrass-ingredients.
It was so prevalent that the UESP-wiki has a rather lengthy sub-section of work-around solutions for it that involves stuff like obtaining an original non-GotY-disc version of the game to solve it, and the fact that Bethesda never bothered to patch it still makes me pissed off at Bethesda and Todd Howard's "It just works!"-comment he made for Fallout 76; no, it doesn't work! You still haven't fixed that Bloodgrass-bug, and made me restart my furry Khajiit stealth archer that I spent hundreds of hours playing with!

I'd say most people who bought one at launch were either blind console fanboys, going to resell them online , of thru wanted a cheap (for the time) Blu Ray player.

To me, having a Blu Ray player was cool. (But I still can’t believe the system was so hard to work with compared to the previous console)

Oh boy, can’t wait to pay $500 to play Resistance Fall of Man on a controller without force feedback because of Sixaxis! Sony assured me it was impossible to include both of those things in the same controller so at least I know they won’t try to sell me a better controller in like a year’s time. Also, I can install Linux on this! That’s a great feature they definitely won’t remove later!

Dude. The PS2 had so many games! Just think of the catalogue the PS3 will have in no time!

I forgot just how huge the PS3’s library became in its lifespan.

I say cold because the console came out in late 2006.

I don’t know when exactly the Last Guardian started production as it was a long time the game was in development for.

So, I never owned one until much later (after ps4 was around) because I ended up with a 360. However, I did want one because of the Blu-ray player and just the fact that I loved my ps2. It was a bit too expensive for me back then though.
