A theatrical feature-length anime adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato, titled Space Battleship Yamato Root 2199, has officially announced. Hideaki Anno will serve as planner, executive producer and director, with Yutaka Izubuchi serve as co-director.

Space Battleship Yamato began its TV anime broadcast on October 6, 1974, and today marks the 52nd anniversary of its debut. It is a story depicting the adventures of the Space Battleship Yamato -- humanity’s last hope -- and its crew, and since the broadcast of the first TV anime series, it has spawned numerous spin-offs.

Anno has said he grew up profoundly influenced by Space Battleship Yamato. He served as planner and producer for the work’s 50th anniversary project in 2024, which involved screening and exhibition events. Izubuchi also served as chief director and screenwriter for Space Battleship Yamato 2199.

Animation production will be handled by Production I.G and Studio Khara. The teaser visual features the Space Battleship Yamato Root 2199 logo and depicts the Yamato preparing to launch from a devastated land into space. Anno commented, “I am working on this not only to fulfill the dreams I had as a boy, but because I want to continue creating Yamato imbued with our prayers and wishes for the next generation and our own generation. That is the feeling with which I am making it.”

Anno is just living the dream of adapting his childhood favorites.

The first things he ever released were fan films for stuff like Ultraman, it's full circle.

I still can’t get over how he told Shinji Higuchi to get rid of mo-cap actors for ultraman cause they weren’t doing it right

Guess who Anno thought was appropriate for the job

Tbf who wouldn't do the same in his shoes

I feel a little cynical that he keeps just playing with his toys instead of making something new, but I understand that the economics for an already established IP looks better to the money people.

I however have a fear of Anno as the otaku trapped by nostalgia that he himself warned and critiqued about.

As long as the works themselves don't fall into the trap of cheap nostalgia and otaku pandering getting in the way of any message they're trying to tell. It's not like Anno and Khara just finished up a Gundam series that succumbed to this same pitfall, right? Ahaha...it's Annover.

He’s kind of an old man now, in another field he’d be looking at retiring at his age, especially one who’s reached his level of success. I think expecting him to commit to the stresses of creating a new IP at that point is is somewhat unlikely, since realistically he doesn’t need to do anything, he can just do victory laps on for fun projects all he likes.

Can't wait for Anno's Lupin lll and Anno and the Green Gables

I've actually been meaning to get around to watching the 2199 anime after really liking it's showing in Super Robot Wars V. Hoping this turns out well.

It's super good. Every episode is either a space ethics exploration episode (TNG) or a running space war narrative episode (DS9). Couple that with a banger OST and a big ass gun that requires 5 minutes to charge and 10 minutes to debate the morals of using it, and you get a pretty good time.

Pretty sure the only reason it wasn't as big as it should have otherwise been is because it came out in the same season as Kill la Kill.

Of all the Anno movies that have come out, this is the announcement that made me "HOLY SHIT" the most. I ADORE 2199; it's in my top 3 favorite anime, easy, and seeing Anno's take on the big screen is something I'm extremely looking forward to now!!

I need to finish the rewatch I'm doing with a friend haha
