Better Ask Reddit What is your Recommend or Die?
You can have a separate one for Woolie and for Pat. One for John as well, if you feel like you know his tastes well enough.
Basically, what ONE piece of media would you recommend with the understanding that the recommendee could force you to experience anything in media they've experienced. So whatever your recommendation is, it needs to be worth you potentially having to play through Omikron the Nomad Soul.
For Woolie, I would recommend playing SWTOR. I genuinely think he'd enjoy playing through the class stories and the idea of him playing an MMO that Pat hasn't played tickles me.
For Pat, I'd recommend watching Gary and His Demons. He's mentioned liking Venture Bros and Rick and Morty (before the fandom ruined it). Gary and His Demons is that kind of energy with a demon hunter anime premise and a hefty dose of Canadian. I also think some of the later themes in Season 2 would resonate well with him.

For Woolie: Moral Orel. For Pat: Ergo Proxy, because I have no idea if he’d like it or hate it

u/RealMurphiroth It's Fiiiiiiiine. 11h ago
I'd make all of them read all of Animorphs. The discussion would be wild.

They don’t even take that long to read, either. They’re fairly quick to get through.

To not repeat any answers (as a few I’d suggest others already did)…
For Woolie, Mushi-shi. I think it is intensely up his alley. It’s a vibe.
For Pat, The Orville. He’s mentioned it’s been “on the list” to check…for years now. Again, I think it’d be right up his alley. Dude loves Star Trek and outside of a couple episodes in Season 1, it’s pure Star Trek.
For Wolf, Gungrave. Both because Gungrave is fucking awesome…but also because it would help him better understand Woolie. Cause much like me, that shit seems to be baked deep into Woolie.

The late nineties/early oughts British sitcom Spaced: it's a very funny little time capsule of London at a very specific time, the characters play PS1 games and complain about the brand new Star Wars prequels

If you enjoyed Spaced, I highly recommend Wasted. It was basically a modern love letter to Spaced.

Using slightly more technical language than actual AA makes it sound so much better in the legal drama scenes, don’t know how to explain it.

I love Phoenix bumbling his way to success, but Morgan is such a breath of fresh air as a competent lawyer who knows her shit. Like look at how Morgan responds to photo evidence compared to Nick.
Phoenix: “Oh no, this is awful! This could ruin my case! What do I do? I just have to hope I can find a contradiction.”
Morgan: “Too zoomed in, resolution too low, no timestamp, nobody’s confirmed the source, no guarantee it hasn’t been edited, if you tried presenting this to a judge they’d skin you alive for wasting their time. Anyway, here’s why it actually helps my argument.”

For Pat, its Centaurworld, both seasons, all 18 episodes. Cause the centaur joke I'm out the loop on and the only fart I know that isnt first a joke or a fetish.
For Woolie, frankly, I want him to hit the other Armored Core 6 endings, but otherwise as I think it was mentioned in a podcast but can't recall if he watched, Akudama Drive.
For John, Mononoke, including the original short, the series, and the movie trilogy. Think more of an active Mushishi accompanied by a trippy Lotus Juice song.

u/Silvery_Cricket I Remember Matt's Snake 11h ago
Woolie needs to read all of One Piece and John needs to read all of Peter David's Aquaman. Yes that includes the Atlantis Chronicles.

Shadow Hearts, both 1 and Covenant (and From the New World if you feel like it). They're a fantastic blend of horror and goofy comedy, in a fun RPG with timing-based mechanics. They are completely unique in tone and setting, taking place across Asia and Europe before and during the first world war. One of your party members in Covenant is a buff gay vampire who is also a masked wrestler who trained under The Great Gama. If that doesn't sell you, I don't know what will.

Probably Fate Zero for Woolie, both because it would be funny to see him actually engage with Fate after all these years but also because it's the only Fate thing I think he'd actually like.
1
u/Capable-Education724 11h ago
He’s claimed he tried to engage with Fate but bounced off of it hard. I imagine he’d use that to Combo Breaker you lol.

u/Corvinny Enjoyer of "Fuck It We Ball" Combat 11h ago
For Woolie, I'd probably recommend Kagurabachi. He seems to be a fan of action-focused media with darker undertones, so he'd probably be interested in it.
For Pat, I'd probably recommend Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. I heard he is very into "Sword and Magic" games, so a game that I think has some of the best sword combat and cool ways to use spells would be a good fit for him.
For John, I'd probably recommend Live A Live. From what I gathered, he likes it when a game does something unique, so he'd probably enjoy what that game does with seperate main characters in different settings/eras.
7
u/AvalancheMKII 10h ago
Live A Live absolutely feels like something John would like. I feel like you could honestly even just tell him to complete 3 or 4 of the time periods and report back to make it even easier to get into.

Couldn't tell you about the Pat and Woolie of today but i feel like with their personalities and what they like (from one Dragonlancer to another) from a distance i would travel back in time to 15-20 year old Pat and Woolie and recommend them Bionicle. I'm not one of those idiot freaks that submits the documentaries to the slopstreams but there's some hype as shit stuff in there i could see both of them becoming ALL IN on at one point.
3
u/Capable-Education724 10h ago
It always amazes me when somebody submits something that’s 5+ minutes to either Pat or Woolie. Cause 99.9% of the time? Instant skip.
5
u/Foostini It's a hard job being a hater but someone's gotta do it 10h ago
It's a fundamental whiffing of the vibe. I don't get how you see a collection of meme videos and submit a super serious lore-dump of anything (or anything to do with Fate) thinking you're gonna get much other than a sigh and an eye-roll. Blows my mind.

u/Blastcalibur 7h ago
Yu-yu Hakusho. It is to this day the best battle shonen of all time. Character writing, world building, power system, fight choreography, the whole 9 yards.
7
u/MirrahPaladin 11h ago
Haibane Renmei. I’d recommend it knowing damn well there’s a risk of having to watch Solo Leveling or Mushoku Tensei or whatever

u/Tweedleayne Shameless MK X-11 apologist. The Kombat Kids were cool fuck you. 9h ago
Id recommend Ichi the Witch to both, though i feel John would probably be the one who'd enjoy it more.
Mainly so that it can become an accepted subject on this sub and mods will stop taking down all the posts talking about it.

u/Mizzie-Mox 11h ago
Elder Scrolls lore, for either Woolie or John. I don't mean just play a typical run of Skyrim, I mean deep dive into it. Playing Morrowind. Reading all the books. Checking Obscure Works/C0DA. If they want absolute batshit worldbuilding, I don't think there's anything better.

I need an in depth podcast discussion on pankratosword, time traveling racist cyborgs (Woolie thought Wakka was bad? Let’s get Pelinal up in here!), and trees that can achieve space flight and shoot missiles made of math.

or maybe twisted metal cause of the 'historical' injoke that the beta testers were from fighting games because aparently ''street fighter with cars'' was the best description for this genre of car combat back in the day when it was a new thing,

For Woolie manga: make the exorcist fall in love (would love to hear his opinion on how it handles religion)
For John show: over the garden wall (it's short, so I would also recommend delving into it's various interpretations, for Dante's Inferno theory I would point towards the one made by overly sarcastic productions)
For Pat youtube series: hunter the parenting (show about fathers for a father, also I think he would find it funny)
All could easily be experienced in a month like the usual versus wolves episodes. (That's why no adventure time recommendations, since in my opinion the only right stopping point would be end of season 6)

u/Komayeda 11h ago
I'm recommending Miraculous Ladybug to both of them. I know I'm gonna have to tank Omicron for this, but it'll be really funny.
3
u/DonnieMarko1 11h ago
He probably gets it all the time from people in chat but Grappler Baki for Woolie. It's essentially the Jojo of martial arts manga. The pseudoscience is about as insane if not more while still being surprisingly nuances in its writing. I could probably endure Omikron...once

To Woolie and John, my recommendation would be Jeff Smith's epic fantasy comic book Bone, particularly the original black and white version. I would describe it as "Imagine Mickey Mouse, Donald and Goody got lost on the way home and accidentally entered Lord of the Rings." Great comic, fantastic art, interesting characters. It's a good time.
To Pat, I would recommend the indie game Rain World, a science-fiction 2D platformer with amazing art and interesting gameplay best described as "Playing through a nature documentary". I'd recommend it partially for the fun of seeing his frustration playing it, as it can be brutal and unfair, but also in the hope that it manages to get him invested, as it's genuinely interesting and can really grip you. It's almost Dark Souls-esqe in how hard it can be and how often you'll retry, but you'll want to see and experience where it takes you.
And a recommendation for anyone: The Moomins, particularly the children's novel Comet in Moominland, the second book in the series. You don't need to have read the first one, as they can mostly be read in any order and the author found their footing in this one. There's a 90s anime and the comic strips and movies, but the novel in particular is the one I'd like to hear [someone] discuss in this context.

u/Comkill117 The Bubblegum Crisis Shill 11h ago edited 57m ago
For Woolie, definitely Ninja Gaiden Black (unless he's played it already, last I heard he hadn't yet). I pick Black over Sigma because I really think it's the vastly superior version, a lot of Sigma's changes mess with the game, usually to its detriment, whereas Black is basically a straight upgrade over 2004 with tons of new features and a way better take on higher difficulties. It's easily one of the best stylish action games ever made.
For Pat, actually playing Spec Ops: The Line instead of just seeing videos about it.
For John, I know he jokingly watched part of Gundam SEED but actually watching the original series from 1979 could be a good time. I know some find the visuals off-putting because of their age, but I feel like the series holds up really well overall.
As for Omikron, I can combo breaker that shit so it's fine.

u/DoomWang333 10h ago

The sad part is I’m going through 2 so I’d probably play a bit of it eventually anyway.

u/TarnishedGopher 11h ago
For Woolie and John: the book Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman. A devastatingly grim, literally apocalyptic horror-fantasy take on The Black Plague that explores humanity, religion, and redemption. No-brainer recommendation for Berserk enjoyers.

u/Silv3rS0und Camping and Mead 10h ago
Woolie should read Tower Dungeon.
Pat should watch Big Trouble in Little China.
John should watch Vivy: Flourite Eye's Song.

RDR2 for woolie (shocking giving my profile pic I know)

Caligula Effect.
The story is essentially a bunch of people stuck in a matrix world where all their troubles from the real world are gone and they're just high schoolers forever; most characters are adults in the real world, usually with their share of traumas.
The combat has you see into the future and then plan a party-wide combo on enemies.
The game is jank as hell but the writing is heavier persona and the combat is essentially looking at frame data to do a cool combo so it has something for both.

I’d make them play Yakuza 4 for the pachinko. The challenge is complete by the time they get the “King of pachinko” trophy and by then they should have a decent understanding of how it works

Katanagatari for Woolie because I think him and Reggie experiencing it would be hype.
Murderbot Diaries for Pat just to see what would happen.

Woolie and Pat need to play Saros.
It's Returnal, but without all the problems they complained about with Returnal.

u/AGuyThatLives 11h ago
Easy for all 3 I would tell them to play Destiny 2. With the stipulation that they have to do 1 raid and 1 dungeon. I legit think they would have a good time with the gameplay and realize just have weird the state of the game is.

Why for Pat if he isn't a part of Versus Wolves?

Because I have over a decade of Pat knowledge in my head and not nearly as much Eyepatch Wolf knowledge to draw from.

I will die, but dropping the massive mountain of reading that is Girls Frontline lore/story would be fun. It's incredibly cumbersome to go through, but in the long run it has that MGS type of story where the most interesting things are just people talking about stuff and things.

Also that scientist was voiced by Vincent D'Onofrio.

I'd most likely go with Bionicle, but trying to have somebody experience it the same way somebody who was there while it was being released would experience it is practically impossible. Maybe Solatorobo instead?

3

Oh man, Pat would lose his mind trying to play Tomba.
…And it would be an easy 100+ Part LP for Woolie.
The Beard Bros recently LPed it and they’re fairly competent, and even they struggled with the game.
And I say this as somebody that played the hell out of Tomba as a kid. It’s a very mysterious jogo.

Mob Psycho 100. I know the guys glaze One Punch Man but MP100 is One’s magnum opus and it’s not even close. Plus, the anime is an incredible adaptation from start to finish.
