Better Ask Reddit It's World Teachers' Day! Name your favorite teacher in media.
Remember when Obi-Wan said Darth Vader fell to the Dark Side because he wasn't as good a teacher as Yoda? Well Yoda's student, Count Doku, fell to the Dark Side too. And Obi-Wan's student ended up killing Doku so he was an even better teacher than Yoda.

I mean Naruto wouldn’t have rasenshuriken if not for kakashi’s teachings
Tbh I think Naruto fans don’t understand the actual role of sensei’s in the manga. Not everyone is Miggt guy who makes their students carbon copies of themselves

u/Wisterosa 2h ago
even then you can argue Guy neglected Tenten and Neji too much, the same problem Kakashi had in Part 1

Kakashi is too cool lol. But what can I say? I'm a big fan of Jiraya myself.

Kakashi’s best teacher moment is him calling another teacher out on inappropriate curriculum with their students

Less teacher and more father figure, but...
"Now, you listen to me-James Hawkins...You got the makings of GREATNESS in ya! But you gotta take the helm and chart your own course! Stick to it, no matter the squalls! And when the time comes and you get to show what your really made of, well-I hope I'm there, catching some of the light coming off ya that day."
A quote that...basically pushed me through my depression, and is something between me and my mom even now.

u/Shiplord13 8h ago
The aspect of Silver acknowledging he wasn’t a good role model for James in long term, but still recognizes he could give some good advice to direct him in a more self positive way is a nice outcome for their relationship.

I agree, it’s more father figure but it’s still a good heart warming teaching moment.
I love that moment to and it also helped me.

I would have loved having Koro Sensei as a teacher.

u/tigerrish1998 11h ago
Koro Sensei made me wish every teacher was half as enthused at teaching as that tentacle monster. Or half as competent. Really a standard educators should strive for (and their paychecks should match)

Greatest Teacher Onizuka
He might not be a good academic teacher but he’s a great teacher of life.
He truly loves his students, challenges them and shows both soft and tough love.
He has flaws, big flaws but he is like robin Williams teacher in dead poet society
Oh yeah Robin Williams in a dead poet society.
Teachers that inspire students to break their limits and be better are the best teachers

Onizuka was the guy who woke up teenaged me to the fact that teachers are real people too, and really leveled up my respect for the good ones.
Upon further reflection, it's a very good thing he got transfered to a middle school because otherwise that boy was one unforgivable scandal away from ruining that image forever. Good on you for ultimately not being a predator, Onizuka.

"I've been trained in your Jedi arts by Lord Tyrannus!"
"Count Dooku? How curious...I trained the man who killed him."

That is 10 thousand times better than anything that was in that movie.

The master chain of Count Dooku as a Jedi is funny since it starts with Yoda -> Count Dooku - > Qui-Gon Jinn -> Obi-Wan Kenobi -> Anakin Skywalker. It’s a personal affair when it comes to Dooku’s feud with the three main Jedi he deals with in the prequels. If I recall a recurring plot-line in the Expanded Universe stuff was that the Jedi Council was paranoid of Qui-Gon for his unique view, actions and thinking in terms of being a Jedi and using the force. That after his death and Dooku’s betrayal there was an air of paranoia regarding his him believing he could have went after Maul to clear Dooku’s path to becoming Sith. With also some scrutiny of Oni-Wan who bring Qui-Gon’s student and that master of the chosen one Anakin could betray them too, which became obviously wrong with Obi-Wan being the paragon of the Jedi of that era.

Master Piandao from Avatar. He's not in the show much, but that one episode with Sokka resonated with me.
Both for how he just taught Sokka that he's already on the right path to being the man he wants to and can be, but also his line "Knowledge of the arts belongs to us all."

Ellen Baker, the teacher character from a Japanese textbook who was so cute that everyone had to draw her.
Was truly a purer and simpler era of art trends.

One of the first times I ever saw a character and went "Oh my God she's just like me!" was Kawakami in early P5 just because she's fucking exhausted and frazzled all the time.

Do unintentional teachers count? Because one of the best parts of ASOIAF is the Sansa chapters as she becomes a professional at the game of thrones learning from the hound, joffrey, littlefinger and cersei.
The worst teachers in all of fiction no doubt but it makes for some really amazing chapters

Sensei Blue Archive is kind of a nerd, a pushover, and a weirdo who can't control themselves around Gehennans, but they work hard, genuinely care about each and every student in the proper context of a teacher/student relationship, and would personally stand up to anything when even one student's life is in danger.

I like Chronos/Crowler in Yu-Gi-Oh GX. At the very start of the series, he seem like just an asshole teacher trying to get Judai expelled. But, as the series goes on, he mellows out big time. There are multiple times where he puts himself on the line to protect his students, and season 2 has him fighting to protect the Red dorm from being demolished. The best showcase of this is his rematch with Judai in season 4, where he genuinely congratulates his student for his victory rather than being a huge sore loser like he was the last time.

When I recently reread Harry Potter out of curiosity as to how it aged (way worse than expected) I was amazed at how well Albus Dumbledore aged as a character. He's someone who sincerely cares about every person he meets, even enemies and murderers, and is just this wonderful font of kindness. The illustrated edition of Sorcerer's Stone that I got before Rowling started her bullshit has this pic of Dumbledore sitting down on the floor next to Harry that's just great. I ended up coming away from it kinda baffled that someone as cruel and awful as her created a character like him.

My favorite heroic teacher is Kuroki Gensai. He claims upfront that he doesn’t take students despite being a master of Kaiwan-school karate, but as soon as a student shows up and humbly asks to learn, he starts teaching. When Kuroki first beats Lihito and Lihito asks for training, Kuroki says “I don’t take students. But if you watch my next match and learn something from it, I won’t stop you.” Then after that next match, the first thing Kuroki does after he wins is ask Lihito a post-text comprehension question: “That fight ended rather strangely. What do you think happened there?” His relationship with Lihito is positive and encouraging, especially when Lihito loses despite making great progress.
My favorite villainous teacher is probably the duo of Kreese and Silver in Karate Kid and Cobra Kai. They understand how to reach people where they are, recognize talent, and cultivate behavior through reward and punishment. Their curriculum development is guided by practical application and ever-growing real-world experience. As two people running a business, they know the important of branding and make sure everything looks as cool as possible. They’re just fucking evil about all of this.

and how could i forget koichi kawato from rookies, the legitimate best teacher ive ever seen in manga. changed his kids' lives with nothing but pure determination to believe in them no matter what they did to disprove him while everyone in the school told him they were lost causes, all in his first teaching job
