Film/TV posting Ever since Endgame, the only Marvel Movies I watched been Spider-Man ones. How lost you think would I be for Doomsday?

I keep thinking on that one moment in the new Spider-Man movie with the new Black Widow, I was clearly supposed to go "Oh, it's the lady from the thing!"

But all I got was "Wait, who is she?"

And that made me think... this feeling will probably be tenfold for Doomsday, the movie that's actually supposed to be the get together of all previous movies.

I would love to be wrong about it, but will I?

u/RevenTheLight What do you mean, you DON'T have a Sonic OC?! 19h ago

The short answer is - we don't know until the movie comes out.

But I did have a similar conversation with my roommate about this recently. And as person that watched Endgame and had no idea who Vanda or Vision (never seen Ultron) was... I think you will be fine.

You will have osmosis from nerd culture about most of these characters, from memes and internet. They are not using unknown picks anymore anyway. And even with all that, I'm sure Doomsday will be a pretty good and fun summer blockbuster, even if you don't know every single guy. marvel will make sure you will get basic context for normies. At least that's my take on it.

Usually they're written in a way that rewards franchise fans but can be followed by people who only catch the odd one or none at all. You'll probably understand it just fine but you're gonna have some "who tf is that guy" moments

I'm thinking you could watch Thunderbolts, Shang-Chi, and Deadpool and Wolverine and probably be fine.  The Loki series if you want to be thorough.

Or just read/watch a plot breakdown of those things and you'll be fine.

+1 for Thunderbolts. I watched it recently and was surprised by how good it was. The writing feels like their shows instead of their movies, which is good

Oddly enough, I've been a little more consistent in watching the TV stuff, although not by much.

I watched all seasons of Loki, Wandavision, Agatha All Along, and both seasons of Born Again.

Honestly I think that means you pretty much have everything you need.

Watch Hawkeye. You get a good understanding of Yelena, and also it's a fun, underrated show.

They've put out a list of movies to watch before Doomsday, and on Disney plus those specific movies have a little green aura around the thumbnails. I'd look the list up, wiki dive on the ones you're not interested in watching and watch the ones you are.

I just remembered I also watched Guardians Of The Galaxy trilogy, but those movies just feel so disconnected from the rest of MCU I feel it barely matters.

Funny that, I never been a DC person ever, but I've been a lot more consistent with DC universe cause I really love James Gunn movies, and I adore the Peacemaker show and Lanterns been great.

Yeah, Guardians 3 (and the Holiday Special) is something I’d suggest in terms of quality but I’m unsure how important it will be to Doomsday. Especially with it unclear if we’re ever seeing the Guardians again outside of Star Lord (who is now on Earth).

If anything is required it might be the Loki series, it depends entirely on your ability to just kind of go with the flow of being introduced to new heroes. It's kind of like picking up a comic book after a period of not reading.

If you NEED to know about who certain characters are then I would add Thunderbolts, Shang-Chi, BP 2: Wakanda Forever, and Fantastic Four.

The issue is Doomsday will be followed up by Secret Wars which will likely feature other characters who've been introduced or active since Endgame.

I think Thunder bolts and F4 are all gonna be needed due to them being some of the main teams in the new movie.

In all honesty it doesn’t seem like it’s following any plot threads. Fantastic Four has a post credit scene and that’s it. Any relationship between reed and doom in the trailer wasn’t set up in the movie. I think all you need to know is the Thunderbolts and cliff notes of Thor Love and Thunder, Black Panther 2 and Captain America 4. This is a pretty hard reset of the MCU it’s not like Infinity War where the plot threads from 5 movies were in the movie like Thor 3, Civil War, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Spiderman Homecoming and Black Panther.

If you’re watching on Disney+, they have a “Countdown to Doomsday” collection that is apparently the recommended watch list. I also have not kept up with post-Endgame MCU and have like negative hype for Doomsday, so I’ll probably eventually watch once it hits streaming but will probably not do all the “homework”.

I’m going to be real, probably not that lost?

Even Infinity War was surprisingly standalone when it came to the actual plot. Like, sure you may not know how all the characters are connected or who they are, but you can infer a lot via context.

This is coming from someone who watched like 1/3rd of the marvel films.

My dad could follow Infinity War and he only seen Winter Soldier and parts of the first two Avengers and Guardians.

Just treat it like I did event comics back int he day. You'd see like Red Arrow popping up in the Justice League going "I will never forget that thing at that place with the guy" with an asterix telling you which issue they're in and just going fuck that and not really caring about it because tie-ins barely matter.

EXTREMELY

I think for cohesion the ones you would need the most would be Loki plus the more obvious Fantastic four and Thunderbolts on top of those since they're some of the main new teams involved in it.  Outside of that just know that (Thor 4)Thor adopted a kid So you don't have to suffer thought Love and thunder, thought if you want any more character context: Shang Chi (same director as Spidey 4 if that strikes your fancy) and Black panther 2.

u/Totally_a_boy "Give daddy some sugar." - Batman (2015) 19h ago

Oh hold on, let me correct myself, I most definitely watched Thor Love and Thunder, just forgot the plotline completely, though it's probably one of those things that, if the Doomsday entice my memory, I'll go "Oh yeah that happened."

1

u/South25 Sky the second this year baby! 19h ago

Yeah Thor 4 really sucked. But I think that's the most they'll reference on it since it's already in the Thor related trailers.

2

u/BlissingNothfuls They/Them - You had your "QUAMS"!? 19h ago

It's weird because they're kinda setting it up like an Endgame sequel

There are characters you might not recognize, but I feel like if the movie is doing its job it shouldn't matter if you're not familiar

2

u/Capable-Education724 15h ago

In a sense, it is. End Game was the last proper Avengers movie we had and this is meant to be Avengers 5 as much as they are calling it Doomsday.

2

u/Embarrassed-Mind3258 18h ago

the movie seems very much like a "break glass in case of emergency" indicative that theyre aware that the popularity of these had been falling off. you probably will not be very lost if you watch the following at the very least

  • Black Widow: This introduces the new Black Widow and her dad, if you want to know how they came into all this
  • Thunderbolts: A bunch of shit happens inbetween this and the last one but it really doesn't matter because I didnt watch it either but I still got what was going on perfectly fine. It's about Yelena and the founding of the new avengers. It's actually a pretty good movie too so it's easy for me to recommend.
  • Loki: Probably straight up the most important of the bunch, pretty much kicks off the whole "multiverse saga" and how it came to be

1

u/ajver19 19h ago

I...I actually don't know. I'm guessing there's been a lot of "ship steering" and I don't know how much of the post Endgame stuff is gonna matter.

That said if you haven't seen it that Loki series is really great and is definitely worth a watch.

u/jamiesonforall 19h ago

Watch shang chi, F4, and Thunderbolts for extra character familiarity and longing.

1

u/ShutUpAboutCanon 19h ago

It's ultimately going to boil down to colourful guys punching each other so it'll be watchable, but you'll miss out on a lot of character moments

1

u/ruminaui 19h ago

This movie is a direct sequel to end game, you don't need to watch anything else. More especifically this is a soft reebot, the movie and it's sequel is going to clear the board, in fact watching nothing more is better as most of those plot threads are going nowhere

I'd reccomended watching Fantastic 4 and you'll be maybe good? Read some synopsis?

Watch Thunderbolts, and Shang Chi

Someone with a Disney Plus subscription can give you the exact answer, but Disney has put out an official 'here's what to watch' playlist on Disney plus.

Based on what we know of Doomsday

Loki (TV show)
WandaVision (TV Show)
Agatha All Along (TV Show)
And if the rumours are true…Vision Quest (TV show).

Due to how they roll from one into the next, WandaVision, Agatha, and Vision Quest are almost like chapters in an over all story. Or, seasons of a show just named slightly differently (and focusing shifting among the main cast between seasons).

Movies…

Black Panther 2
Deadpool and Wolverine
Fantastic Four
Thunderbolts*
Shang-Chi
Spider-Man: Brand New Day

And you’re good as far as we know.

There’s other stuff I’d recommend that’s good (like Werewolf by Midnight and Wonder Man) but they don’t seem necessary as far as we can tell.

u/Luck-X-Vaati One Piece Film: Red - Not Good 14h ago

I mean. Just watch Shang Chi and Thunderbolts I think you’re golden. I really want to emphasize Thunderbolts both because it was good, but also because that’s where the majority of the characters are from. You’d get the gist of the group just from that alone.

Fantastic Four, as decent as it was, I think you could get away with not watching. Nothing in that movie was all that divergent from what you already know about the FF. The main thing you need to know is that the MCU FF is from a different universe. That’s it.

I saw that you mentioned you’ve already watched the tv shows, which is good. No need to explain where Loki is and what he’s doing.

Pretty sure most of the characters you knew before are still pretty similar to when you last saw them.

u/KF-Sigurd It takes courage to be a coward 10h ago

A little but not too much since my best guess from the trailers is that the general premise is Doom coming in to fuck everybody up for messing with the multiverse and timelines, with that 'original sin' being Endgame.

You should watch Thunderbolts since it's a great movie if you're interested in catching up. F4 is good, not great. Deadpool and Wolverine is good too.

u/CorruptDropbear [He/They] I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less 10h ago edited 10h ago

I think only Thunderbolts is really needed (and maybe Wandavision). The rest is mostly osmosis:

  • Loki is just a time lord now. The TVA is basically time cops that want to keep everything in its own box to stop time bullshit/multiuniversal wars. I do think Loki is the biggest show you’d probably want to watch if you only could watch one.

  • Fantastic 4 is in an alternate 60s universe (along with Doom) and has no knowledge of the MCU crew.

  • Deadpool and Wolverine along with all old X-Men is in the Fox Universe.

  • Shuri is the new Black Panther, Shang-Chi is cool, Thor adopted a kid, Ant-Man gets no respect.

  • Wanda is missing, presumed dead after Dr Strange.

  • Vision didn’t die! He’s a puppet in a white void!

the MCU has gotten pretty good about having one sentence summeries of who a cameo,or two sentences if they're actually important to the plot

I think people exaggerated how much continuity, etc, matter for these movies. You'll get more references if you watch everything of course, but the movies are meant to be blockbuster popcorn flicks. They want people who've never eaten a Marvel to be able to walk in and have a good time.

I came into Infinity War only having seen at most half of the prior movies. Never watched any of the Captain Americas, didn't watch Thor, didn't see Iron Man 3, etc. The movie was great, I had a good time. I imagine Doomsday will be similar

u/HellvaNohbody 15h ago

Only ones after endgame were, MOM, Guardians 3, Panther 2, Deapool X Wolverine (which barely counts) and No Way Home. All because those had signifigance beyond the broader MCU.

I'm commited to to now bothering until there is an actual X-Men film (not just a X-Men character appearing in someone else's movie/show) under the MCU banner, and only out of obligation to see if they fuck it up.

I’d recommend if nothing else Loki (both seasons), Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, X-Men (2000), Deadpool and Wolverine, Thunderbolts*, and Fantastic Four: First Steps.

As for optional material here is the following if you’re interested in certain factions/characters

Yelena Belova/Thunderbolts: Black Widow (2021) and Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Sam Wilson: Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Captain America: Brave New World

X-Men: the Original Trilogy, X-Men: First Class, The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan, and the Deadpool trilogy
