Our Longstanding “No Politics” Rule remains unchanged
Read our rules. We have had a longstanding “No Religion, No Politics” rule here at r/tools.
The mods aren’t stupid. We also don’t like getting buckets of reports in the inbox.
If someone posts/comments with politics, resist the urge to reply and argue. Just report, downvote (if that’s your jam) and move on with life.
A small flag, sticker, etc that appears in a photo will generally be allowed (so long as it doesn’t violate other rules and doesn’t draw a bunch of reports) but a bunch of people in the comments saying “Hell Yeah, a fellow [INSERT PARTY] Supporter!” is gonna get the post pulled. Political content that is clearly the motivation for the post will get the post pulled.
First time it’s a short ban, second time it’s permanent. And as we’ve discussed before, the mod team doesn’t go looking for posts, we’re not lifeguards, we respond to the reports we receive.

Let's talk about the report button.
"No advertising or promoting tools, brands, 25000 woodworking plans, your YouTube channel, etc."
Somebody is reporting things constantly for breaking rule 4, and you're batting zero for it being right.

r/Tools/comments/1ntwiyj/wiha_tools_impact_sockets/
r/Tools/comments/1nt43md/does_anyone_know_a_set_similar_to_this_that_isnt/
r/Tools/comments/1nt3400/does_anyone_have_experience_with_these/
r/Tools/comments/1nt138a/home_depot_promotion_milwaukee_canada_milwaukee/
These are some examples of posts that have been reported over the last day. None of the are breaking any rules, please stop reporting things like this. The reports are only mucking up the moderator inbox and are being kicked up the Reddit chain to the admins as abusing the report button.
Unless you see a post that boils down to "hey guys, this is XXX from YYY, come check out our suspicious sale at toolname.malware.com" leave the report button alone. Same goes for the people who report literally every YouTube link ever posted. If someone's only interaction with r/tools is them spamming their YouTube channel that's a problem; a relevant and organic video isn't.
If someone thinks the above links are spam, please tell us why. Rule changes aren't unheard of and if it's what the people want I'm fine with it. I'm just not seeing any advertisement in the posts.
Other than that you guys are great. Keep up the good work.
I'm completely aware that this is a useless post for 99.99% of our users. If anyone has questions or comments about the sub feel free to chit chat here and I'll try my best to answer things if you want; or just ignore me completely, I'm good with either.

NTD: Blah!
Needed some new linesman and have been wanting to try something from Vampire. Wish they were just a bit bigger (should have got the 9") but they'll do just fine. The quality is obvious, very nice pliers

Serious Question Here!
I bought a bandsaw at a yard sale and the seller has his name wrote across it in sharpie. It’s basically baked in and I’ve tried everything acetone, alcohol, dry erase marker, WD 40, Goo gone, Industrial Mold Cleaner, Brake Cleaner. Anyway what other options do I have? I don’t want to look like I stole something but I don’t know what to do. It was a heck of a deal I couldn’t pass.

Organized my service van today
I'm an apprentice forklift field tech, almost 6 months in and this is my basic hand tool setup. I have a lot of specialty tools that the company provided, along with hammers, sledge, jacks, blocks, chains etc. but I was left to build my own collection of everything else.
I've worked in the welding industry, lube shops, mom and pop shops, and before this job, a company building aviation equipment, and I've always just gotten by with the least possible. Apart from my harbor freight specials, and missing and mismatched sockets, I'm really happy with how it's coming along.
I bought a house 7 months ago so I'm limited on budget, trying to give myself $100 a month to spend. Any recommendations??
Also would love to see your service vehicle organization if you're a field tech, loving my job and have never been happier with the work/life balance.

at what point is a homeowner actually better off paying for a higher-end cordless drill?
i killed my old cordless drill this weekend trying to get through concrete block for an anchor. it was a cheap black+decker that honestly lasted longer than i expected, so i'm not too upset about it.
now i'm replacing it, and i'm stuck between spending around ryobi money or jumping into makita/milwaukee territory
i need one 18v/20v drill that can handle normal house repairs, drive lag bolts into framing, and survive the occasional job that's harder than it should be. i'd also like something that's comfortable enough for basic projects with the kids instead of being a huge heavy beast
the part i'm having trouble judging is what you actually get for the extra money. more power is easy to compare on paper, but i'm more interested in things like the chuck, trigger, clutch, balance, heat, and whether the tool still feels good after a few years.
for people who started with ryobi or another budget brushless drill and later moved up, what specific difference made you feel the more expensive drill was worth paying for?

Donate tools
This might be a silly post, but I accumulated a bunch of redundant tools, screwdrivers, pliers, socket sets, wrenches, hammers, etc. over the years, stuff I haven't touched since I bought it, or I bought a better version of it.
I don't want to deal with people so I don't want to sell them, does anyone know a good place where I can donate them? I feel meh about Goodwill because I know they make a profit of the free stuff they get.
Any other suggestions?
Just to be clear it's cheap Harbor Freight / Kobalt / Husky ,etc. tools, nothing fancy, just want to pay it forward to some place that might need them more, rater than just discard them.
What do you call these bit holding types?
Not the type of head, but the way the bit holder holds it. I know they're 1/4in but there are many different types, like ones meant for locking ball detents or ones meant for magnetic holders.
And does anyone have a guide on what the various different types are called? Like I know some Japanese bits have longer versions of the left type that fit better into Japanese style handles. I'd like to learn more about them.

Drill bits for PG cable-glands
We are looking for drills bits that are close to the through-hole sizes for small PG thread cable-glands.
We make the hole in PC and ABS. We used to use step-cone drill bits, but when you're churning out half-a-dozen boxes and in a hurry, it is too easy to go "PG7, 9, nearly at 11... ...PG16! Fµck-nuggets!"
We found a couple, for PG13.5 and PG 16, but can only seem to find counter-sink drill bits for PG7, PG9 and PG11.
I have done plenty of web searches, places like Würth, IKH, RS, Farnell and so on, but nothing found.
Is it actually possible get conical drill bits at say, PG7 (12,5 mm), PG9 (15,5 mm) and PG11 (19 mm)?

Lowe's apparently has Grizzly now?
I just got back from my local Lowe's and was surprised to see a bunch of Grizzly benchtop tools where Kobalt and Skil stuff used to be. I can't find any mention of these coming to stores online, and weirdly the website doesn't show them in stock at my location either. The employee I talked to knew nothing about them and had never even heard of Grizzly. Pretty interesting to see though, Grizzly's not exactly high end but their stuff is probably better than anything I've seen in this category at big box hardware stores previously.
