You can’t. If you see an unexpected mariachi band you know something is happening. They don’t just show up somewhere, instrument in hand, dressed to impress for no reason.

My friend’s uncles and aunt are all in a mariachi—going to his house for family get togethers is a surreal experience because EVERYONE can sing and EVERYONE can play some type of instrument. It’s like walking into a drunken musical. One night it was about midnight and his great uncle was sitting outside by himself singing Gracias a La Vida while strumming the guitar—I stood around the corner almost in tears because it was so beautiful.
