I have a good friend from Japan who was living in the US for a while. I remember having a conversation about being American and I said something like “if you decided to, you could be just as American as I am.”

And he was like “that’s amazing, because you would never be Japanese” lol

LOL, most largely mono-ethnic cultures are xenophobic to a greater degree than in the U.S. You are far more likely to get harassed by a self-entitled racist in the U.S. though, because racism is a major political tool for conservatives (and has been since before the Civil War) and Americans have forgotten how to mind their own fucking business.

I agree with you about racism in America. I think you’re downplaying Japanese racism.

Absolutely insane from that guy.

The USA is absolutely abhorrent and despicable. Japan’s entire society is built upon not liking other people who aren’t as “Japanese”.

Racism is the fundamental bedrock of the U.S. which is a settler colonial state just like the zionist entity it sponsors. The notion that it is somehow equal or worse to Japan is laughable as people are not systematically terrorized, tortured, and murdered for being non-Japanese in Japan while the U.S. literally has a paramilitary organization to round up and murder people of color.

What you are suffering from is called brainwashing and indoctrination. To continue to believe in the United States and its lies as an adult is embarrassing. Please wake the fuck up.

"if you decided to, you could be just as American as I am."

I have only been in America once but I guess that a Native American never would say that.

He’s right. To this very day in Japan, “Japanese only” signs are common on the doors of bars and restaurants. And yet, they criticize us about our past sins like segregation etc.

Strange that I’m getting downvoted for a completely true statement.

It means they only speak Japanese. Not that only Japanese people are welcome. Interesting how you’re not aware.

You are confidently incorrect lol. Everyone gets the “you’re gaijen and you need to leave” X symbol when traveling through Japan. Not just at crowded or popular dinner spots either.

Japan is awesome and I‘m not at all sensitive to it but there is a LOT of racism happening in Japan

I’ve dined in some of those establishments lol. They just don’t speak anything but Japanese so don’t want to deal with you if you don’t also.

Interesting how you’re lying.

Americans criticize Japanese xenophobia while using secret police to kidnap and deport American citizens of the wrong color. It’s almost like criticizing other peoples’ wrongs is easier than addressing your own. Hmm.

The thing is, most Americans don’t support the use of ICE in this manner. This administration has record low approval ratings. These signs are not controversial in Japan.

These practices being unpopular in America has no stopped them happening; how does it being unpopular make it more moral? There is vocal and powerful support of this as well.

People are trying hard to stop it. Most people disagree with it. Our political system just isn’t set up to allow quick response. In Japan, nobody thinks these signs are wrong.

Support your claims with data or they’re just anecdotal. Given the amount of American (and other) tourism and economic stimulation, I sincerely doubt that these signs are as 1) widespread and 2) popularly supported as you claim.

Secondly, consider how often practically any nonwhite minority is told to go back to their country, refused good service, etc. in America, if not outright subject to violence by the state or citizens.

I don’t know why you seem so dead set on proving that it’s wrong for Japan to criticize the wrongs of the U.S. because they have poor practices of their own. The U.S. has done plenty of despicable things both historically and contemporarily, both abroad to others and at home to its own citizens. To claim it can’t be criticized by any country that is not a moral bastion (name one…?) means no constructive discussion could ever happen. For someone claiming these practices are unpopular and should be changed in the U.S., I would think you’d welcome criticism of them from others.

It’s a pet peeve of mine with Japan specifically. I worked at two US HQ offices for Japanese companies for 20 years. Japanese people are the most casually racist people I've ever spent time around. It was shocking. But their racism is a little different than the racism l am used to as an American. They don't exactly hate other races, but they absolutely think they are the master race, and the standard setters in every aspect of life and society.

I didn't experience many hateful jokes about white people or people of any other race, but I experienced an incredible amount of outright dismissals of anything that isn't "the Japanese way." And in vendor selection for all types of services, they will only do business with other Japanese companies. Office supplies, the mechanic who maintained and repaired the company vehicles, any and all partners and vendors had to be Japanese. There was no written rule, it was just understood.

When I learned that "Japanese only" signs are still a thing on the doors of restaurants and bars in Japan today, that was one of the least surprising things l ever heard.

I so badly wanted to ask them why, if they are so great and do everything the best, has their economy been floundering for decades? Why don't they perform better in the Olympics? Why, even though it is their best sport, do only a handful of Japanese baseball players succeed in Major League Baseball? Why do they have such high rates of suicide and alcoholism?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Japan is worse than the US or Europe. My point is that I know that everyone's shit stinks, including "mine." The Japanese are convinced that theirs only smells of roses.

I’m comfortable criticizing any country or culture because I’m willing to criticize my own. I hold everyone to that standard.

are you dense

youre saying one country can criticize anothers morality while not being subject to criticism themselves

also morality is a human construct and does not actually exist, good and evil are societal concepts used to ensure human survival

“if you decided to, you could be just as American as I am.”

"Just don't expect half of America to accept that"

/jk, I know is not even close to half.. but a big enough chunk that those people get elected to positions of power.
