Discussion She almost ruined a proposal.

This was at Crescent Bay Point Park, which allows people to book it special occasions.

Can we give it up to unsung heroes in the back. That music worked like repellent for her.

I don’t know how anyone can hate a mariachi band.

I once saw Q standing on the sidewalk about 20 minutes from where this beach proposal video took place.

u/BlackLakeBlueFish 8h ago

Way to loop us back to the topic!

9

u/ImagineTheCommotion 14h ago

Lmao what is this gif? A mash-up of 2 sources or an actual Star Trek moment?

30

u/shipsake 14h ago

That’s Q. Shit gets weird when he’s around.

u/KiriNotes 14h ago

One of the best TNG episodes is called "Deja Q", and involves Q being banished from the Continuum and stripped of his powers as a punishment.

He seeks shelter aboard the Enterprise and has to essentially learn what it is to be human, which gains another layer when Data (an android) is assigned to keep Q out of trouble and teach him how to cope with his newfound existence.

It's very good. I won't spoil anything, but that gif is very much from the episode.

Obviously with the final scene kind of baiting you into thinking it's the last you'll see of Q being ridiculous and obnoxious towards the crew. And then he teleports in with a mariachi band and goes OH CONTRAIRE CAPITAINE.

(Anyways 10/10 show. Skip season 1 maybe.)

u/sir_stronghand 9h ago

Skip season 1? And miss gems like "Code of Honor"??

4

u/3vs3BigGameHunters 8h ago

What an ugly giant bag of mostly water.

3

u/sir_stronghand 8h ago

Maybe a hot take but Trek was at it's best when they told Roddenberry to sit down.

2

u/3vs3BigGameHunters 8h ago

Oh I agree 1000%

2

u/sir_stronghand 7h ago

He would've shit himself if he watched DS9 lol. "NOOOOO MY FUTURE UTOPIA HAS SHADES OF GREY!!!"

One of the best TV episodes ever!

"There are creatures in the universe who would consider you the ultimate achievement, android. No feelings, no emotions, no pain... And yet you covet those qualities of humanity. Believe me, you're missing nothing. But if it means anything to you, you're a better human than I."

“You weren’t like that before the beard.”

11

u/somms999 12h ago

"What must I do to convince you people?"
"Die."
"Oh, very clever, Worf. Eat any good books lately?"

No, Worf! Worf, go beat up that big alien! Worf, you got beat up by the big alien, he must be really strong! How's your son?

3

u/Ser_VimesGoT 12h ago

I love that insult so much! Cracks me up to no end.

Thank you for your service

Imagine a race of immortal, omnipotent beings - basically Gods. But instead of lording over the cosmos, one of them spends all his time coming up with over-the-top ways to annoy Captain Picard.

That's Q. Shit gets weird.

The animated series Lower Decks has a moment when Q shows up, and a character tells him to go away and they're not dealing with his bullshit, go see Picard.

If that's canon Star Trek? Then it sure sounds like Starfleet standard procedure is to blow Q off and tell him to go bother Picard, which he inevitably does.

I love the episode of DS9 when he tries that shot on Sisko and  Commander is like “Nah, fool.” 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/G_mork 3h ago

Even Q loves a mariachi

Cartman is racist AF and still enjoys a mariachi band.

u/Subject-Succotash 15h ago

You can’t. If you see an unexpected mariachi band you know something is happening. They don’t just show up somewhere, instrument in hand, dressed to impress for no reason.

My friend’s uncles and aunt are all in a mariachi—going to his house for family get togethers is a surreal experience because EVERYONE can sing and EVERYONE can play some type of instrument. It’s like walking into a drunken musical. One night it was about midnight and his great uncle was sitting outside by himself singing Gracias a La Vida while strumming the guitar—I stood around the corner almost in tears because it was so beautiful.

2

u/Signal-Tangelo1952 6h ago

This sounds amazing! 🤩

3

u/Intosmallones 11h ago

I literally just had one in my church this morning. They were great and brought the house down.

3

u/RosieTheRedReddit 6h ago

I saw a TikTok of a concert venue where the final act had cancelled and organizers booked a mariachi band as a last minute replacement. Crowd was totally surprised and they went wild for it. If you need a 9-piece band like tonight, call your local mariachis, they will be there in 3 hours.

6

u/Shrek1067 15h ago

I love how she didn’t even recognize they were a mariachi band until they started playing… the outfits alone didn’t stand out enough for her 🤦🏼‍♂️

3

u/DogBarf00 14h ago

I see you have never been to your grandpa’s funeral and now associate a mariachi band with that pain.

1

u/shipsake 13h ago

My grandfather’s funeral was at Arlington National Cemetery so, no I don’t. Sorry that it brings up those memories for you though.

4

u/LeSad3900 13h ago

I love Chopin, Beethoven, and Bach. I hate Mariachi, but I'd hate it even if somehow it was a music style that developed contemporaneous to these classical giants in Europe.

We're 1000% allowed to have preferences that happen to fall along specific cultural lines. Just don't be an asshole about it.

2

u/WillowYouIdiot 13h ago

A neighbor just had a quinceañera behind my mom's house last night, and she remarked at how upbeat and happy the music was since they had live music. It's definitely not her normal genre, but she said she was outside happily tapping along to it.

2

u/TastyFace79 12h ago

Can’t say I hate mariachi bands. But when they show up on your 7am morning commute on the subway in NYC it’s really just a matter of bad timing.

1

u/shipsake 12h ago

Lol that sounds awesome

3

u/Middle_Jelly9296 15h ago

No kidding. Absolutely beautiful sound!

5

u/LeSad3900 13h ago

For me it's like screeching cats or nails on a chalkboard.

1

u/Early-Fortune2692 13h ago

Right?!

I was working in the middle east and a guy noticed my hispanic last name and immediately told me a story how he was in LA and heard this music he'd never heard before and had to search the source.

He turned the corner and saw it was a mariachi band. He was really excited and animated about it so I asked him, "When did you visit?" He said, "Oh, about thirty years ago."

Wow! 😁

1

u/Timely-Youth-9074 13h ago

Not my favorite but I know they’re there for a special occasion.

1

u/Wooden_Researcher_36 12h ago

There is an area in the historical center of Mexico with a lot of mariachi schools. And hotels. Trust me you can learn to hate them :p

1

u/Ok-Doctor3103 11h ago

"It's Mexico!!!"

1

u/guesswhodat 11h ago

Racist while cunts do…..

1

u/ZaXa- 11h ago

exactly it’s so beautiful. She has an ugly and bitter soul and face

1

u/watermelonpeach88 10h ago

we had one across the street last night and i lowkey wanted to ask if we could come listen 😝✨🫶🏽

1

u/itsbirthdaybitch 10h ago

Racism makes it easy to hate anything!

1

u/IcyConsideration7062 10h ago

I actually love mariachi music. However, in our area it's often accompanied by truly awful aggressive and continuously repetitive staccato trumpet or by continuous incredibly loud electric bass that shakes the neighboring houses and windows. Until the neighbor who kept holding parties with this moved away I started to really despise it. The band in the post sounds beautiful though.

1

u/Bear_faced 9h ago

Reminds me of the episode of House where he auditions and then hires a mariachi band to play some event that’s important to Cuddy, and Wilson tells her thinking it’s a prank, when it turns out Cuddy genuinely loves mariachi music and it wasn’t a prank at all. Well, except maybe on Wilson. The ultimate anti-prank.

1

u/HmmDoesItMakeSense 6h ago

Right?! You have to have been born without a soul

1

u/Public-Cod1245 6h ago

really, so much happiness.

1

u/CodeNameCobra666 2h ago

I hope you get it soon. It’s called fear and racism. And it’s real.

1

u/CatsEatGrass 8h ago

I find them annoying AF, but if I’m in Mexico, I embrace it as part of the experience.

-2

u/cptnplanetheadpats 15h ago

It's incredibly annoying music IMO, I loved living in LA but damn was it obnoxious hearing that garbage blared at max volume everywhere

3

u/Lophophorussy 14h ago

That’s like moving to NYC and complaining about all the cars honking and pizza rats.

0

u/cptnplanetheadpats 12h ago

Yup, I would complain about those things too. Why can't I?

3

u/Maximum_Photograph_6 15h ago

Sounds like you shouldn’t have been living in LA then.

2

u/cptnplanetheadpats 12h ago

JUST because I don't like dumb Mexican music?
