Bangor police investigated and identified the driver as Ryan Hayward, 38, of Bangor. He was arrested and is charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, driving to endanger, and violating conditions of release.

It's the alcoholism; alcohol ages you, especially if you're drinking it all the time.

Edit: My bad y'all, apparently it's methadone.

635

u/Dry-Lab-6256 1d ago

Dope, I think the place is a methadone clinic.

186

u/Kelhein 1d ago

no dope just methadone actually

102

u/ArmGroundbreaking996 1d ago

But previous/current "dope" use is the reason he would be at a methadone clinic. Just a fact, not a judgement.

I'm about your age and its crazy how differently aged people look in our age now. I stayed out of the sun and never played contact sports so I'm still in pretty good shape. It gets a little awkward when people assume I'm a lot younger and I have to tell them, "no I'm actually old, I was born in 83"(I make them do the math cause I'm too old to remember how old I am. It t's hard cause the number changes every year and the years keep going by faster and faster)

u/Xijit 1d ago edited 1d ago

It seems like his target was the Camera, not the reporter, which is splitting hairs.

98

u/Reese_Slitherspoon 1d ago

Legally it's really not. Intent matters a ton

u/DonkeyMode 1d ago

Yeah, which is why he wasn't charged with attempted murder. It's pretty clear he was aiming at the camera.

8

u/PopularSet4776 1d ago

Idk why, maybe because the elements of the charge are really hard to prove but it has been my experience that prosecutors rarely use the attempted murder charge.

I just have seen so many incidences that look to me and just about everyone else like attempted murder and the prosecutors never pull out that charge.

I suspect that it likely has to do with the trial, that maybe the elements are harder to prove with that so they go with some lesser charge.

I mean if I am a defense attorney trying to defend against attempted murder I would be pointing out that if my client really wanted to kill him he would have been driving faster or would have turned around to make another pass.

Intent is a big part of the charge with attempted murder and it would be easy to argue that you can't determine beyond a reasonable doubt that the intent was to kill and not put him in the hospital or scare him.

Is that reporter one of those first amendment auditors just filming people walking out of a methadone clinic? Or is this for an actual news group?

103

u/artie780350 1d ago

The Maine Wire is commonly referred to as Maine Liar by locals. It's a right-wing media group that posts mostly bullshit. So more than likely yes to your first question and no to the second question.

He would be extremely lucky if they let him plead down to like 10 years. It'll likely be more like 12-15. He's done.

u/Lucky-Worth 1d ago

Methadone clinic

919

u/stink3rb3lle 1d ago

Nasty shit. It kinda looked like the car went for the camera and not the person, hard to say. But I can definitely see why the driver felt the person "reporting" on folks coming out of there would be trying to reveal private information about them, with that context.

It's also inane as hell to try to paint methadone as some horrible intoxicating substance. It's a life saver.

619

u/Lucky-Worth 1d ago

Yeah the "reporter" reminds me of the creepy guy filming in front of a yoga studio that was posted days ago.

Of course the man's reaction is out of proportion, you can't run over people with your car

This is what I hate. The guys like this 'reporter' are the "I'm not touching you" of society. They're absolutely consciously doing what they can within the law to get under your skin and get a reaction out of someone and then film them as if they're the problem for losing their shit.

I put these guys in the same basket as the "I'm just asking questions" guys after basically making an accusation while withholding half the truth or misrepresenting facts.

I’m currently being downvoted to hell for suggesting that while it may be legal, it is also immoral to film certain things…. A rehab centre would be among them. A battered women’s shelter, anywhere children are playing outside…. All perfectly legal to film but also… why? Why do it?

If you’re doing a story about methadone, why do you have to film the actual individuals coming out of rehab?

146

u/IcyKerosene 1d ago

The "journalist" is from the Maine Wire, which is like a right wing "news" site with the ethics of TMZ.

"Methadone clinic" to me falls under the moral umbrella of "medical treatment". HIPAA prevents providers from releasing identifiable health information of any patient. While that doesn't do anything legally about laypeople in public spaces watching and identifying anyone who comes and goes from any medical facility... like, the framework is there. Don't be a dick, let people's medical issues and patronage of medical buildings be their own damn business.

I agree with you on methadone. Knew someone that went through it and is all better now. Save their life.

In regard to the guy filming. He might have a LEGAL right to film in public. But that doesn’t make it ethically right to do this with people coming out of the clinic. It’s just rude, cold and disrespectful. Obviously his parents didn’t raise him with any sort of lessons on decency

u/Swimming_Bonus_8892 1d ago

I will concede this is an absolute extreme, with that being said…

I have personal experience with how addicts who are actively on methadone/suboxone can be treated and let me tell you…it can COST you.

Society at large does NOT award addicts for getting the help they need and the system is judgy as shit about it.

It not just in one place either it’s all over the country (I have traveled extensively). I’m not accusing anyone in the comments or defending his actions (although it looks to me like he’s going for the camera) but outing daily users can cost them their job, future opportunities, relationships and so on.

The guy has every right to “report” on it but the guy asking the questions is not wrong either in that, their privacy is paramount.

I can see where a desperate, totally down on their luck addict who is FINALLY getting the help that they need, after losing everything many, many, many, times before this feeling a need to “defend” the people/property.

I’m not saying what he did was right but I am saying I understand.

While simultaneously thinking that murdering someone they perceive to be breaking a law, rightly or wrongly, is fine.

I really think this is the sort of case where a bad attempt at murder should give someone life in prison. How do you redeem a person like this who clearly has something seriously wrong with them that keeps them from functioning at a basic level in society?

214

u/Fallen_Feather 1d ago

Agreed! The only difference between “attempted” murder and “murder” is the death of the victim. The number of cases where someone received a short sentence for “attempted” murder and then gets out of prison to successfully murder their original victim is astounding.

The “attempt” should be taken more seriously. They intended to kill someone.

34

u/blueskyredmesas 1d ago

At the very least a 100mi restraining order enforceable by prison time if it was found to have been knowingly violated just makes sense.

The US is a big place and getting locked out of Cleveland until the day you die seems like a very small price to make someone pay for trying to murder somebody, so at the very least we can do that.

Like if they're going to be recording our every move and can pull our geo data whenever they feel like it, can we at least get a benefit from that? And if not maybe they can, yknow, not make a surveillance state.

The dude filming in public is a far right wing reporter doing an expose on a methadone clinic and claiming the clinic is nothing but a state funded drug dealer. He’s probably also the type to see a homeless drug addict and wonder why he won’t get help.

Basically, what I’m saying, the reporter may have a right to film in public but he’s also a scumbag.

EDIT: I never said the guy almost running the scumbag over was justified in his actions; however, the guy almost running the scumbag over is also not infringing on the scumbag’s rights. Scumbags seem to forget there can be consequences to being a scumbag.

Yeah, seriously.

In my experience, most reporters don't have to openly carry pepper spray on their belts in the course of their reporting duties. It's generally not necessary for vast majority of reporters.

However, I suppose reporters working in a war zone might consider it, but this does not appear to be a war zone.

Also, not a lot of reporters choosing trucker hats either, but that's totally fine, I suppose. Trucker hats are a valid choice.

It just makes me wonder about the reporting style that needing to carry pepper spray is necessary.

What kind of reporting are you doing where you might need to protect yourself with your pepper spray in the course of your reporting duties?

“Reporting” on people leaving a drug treatment facility is an awful thing to do. They are making a choice to get help. While legal to film in public, this is very immoral. Plus this can get into murky waters if you are targeting with an intent to dox vulnerable patients. Should the guy have came at him with his car? Obviously not. But this “reporter” is acting in bad faith and provoking people seeking stigmatized care.

106

u/nossssss888 1d ago

Christ is that why he’s there?

They’re literally vulnerable adults while they’re in there. What a scumbag

54

u/SunKing210 1d ago

I saw a video of a guy explaining who this ‘reporter’ is, he’s a pathetic man named Joe Sokol and he’s one of those annoying auditor types were they just harass people in public to get reactions, hence why he has a pepper spray tied to his belt.

However this Sokol guy is even worse than that, he is constantly harassing black people specifically and once they get angry enough he uses that footage conveniently to highlight how the town he lives in is becoming worse due to a drug epidemic or some crap.

It’s truly vile and I don’t feel sorry for whatever comes this guy’s way in the future.

I've said it multiple times, at some point in the future they'll find out what chemical cocktail it was that made a huge chunk of the US mentally... challenged.

u/BetweenTheRoots 1d ago

People underestimate how bad the education is in rural/poor areas. I went to a poor school, then a magnet school, then I went to another magnet school for high school that was sharing a building with a poor high school. The difference in education was substantial and it made me outright feel bad for the others. One small caveat is the smart kids at poor schools got incredibly easy As and scholarships.

Then I had friends from the rich areas with nice schools and their education was way better than that I got at magnet schools. Poor kids, which are disproportionately but not exclusively black, get a substantially worse education. High school teaches them next to nothing, not even basic math.

For those who don't know, magnet schools in the US are schools that don't require you to live nearby them and tend to have better curriculum.

A good start to fixing it is reallocating private school public funds to public schools, and reallocating property taxes which funds schools to be distributed evenly. You'll still have issues with rural areas, but it's a start.

for a lot of older Americans it is exposure to lead

I’d say it’s more likely an exposure to Fox News.

35

u/ToTouchAnEmu 1d ago

You can say the guy filming is an asshole for filming an addiction center for clicks and clout, but that doesn't justify what homie in the car did.

The proper way to handle this? Park nearby and blast copyrighted music.

What place is he recording?

38

u/DadCelo 1d ago

Bangor Comprehensive Treatment Center

67

u/UnexpectedBlahFeels 1d ago

Looks like a drug rehab facility. Makes me wonder why he was recording exactly, but that thought was sidelined after the other guy ran over this guy's camera.

It's not the facility's fault they have a crazy patient. He's a drug addict in recovery afterall. That does explain the guys seemingly random comment insinuating the other guy was driving drunk though.

26

u/SookHe 1d ago

The “reporter” is from the Maine Wire, a far-right website that spreads very bigoted BS.

Everything else aside, this dude did what I've been telling EVERYONE to do: if you are recording and witness a crime, or are a victim of a crime, read the license plate aloud for the camera! That way it will make for better evidence if you ever need to go to court.

This guy works for the Maine Wire. They’re right wing antagonists and this POS was filming people coming in and out of a drug treatment and rehabilitation facility. They’ve been harassing people here for years, getting in their faces and winding them up, then filming and releasing the videos to make them look bad. They had people screaming in protesters faces after the ICE murder here trying to create a story for themselves. This guy’s lucky it’s just his camera that got destroyed.

20

u/LoanSevere6287 1d ago

Fuck that guy. Hope his camera got squished. Maybe jump away from the car, not into it, next time.

10

u/Dry_Country_1505 1d ago

Facts are this... dude may be an A-hole... driver may be getting help... but nothing excuses a person who is trying to run another person over with their car who isn't using their body as a blockade or trying to get themselves out of a defensive situation. He left and came back with the intent to cause serious harm or death. Inexcusable for any person.

u/jasperCrow 1d ago

It’s so common in America that people don’t even know what their rights are anymore. No wonder why they elected an authoritarian that they all are oppressed by now. America’s education system has been broken for about 40-50 years now, and it’s finally starting to show the signs.

u/ObanKenobi 1d ago

No idea who this guy is, but as soon as you hear "essentially probably intoxicated" come out of a reporters mouth on the air, you should know immediately they are not a real journalist.

19

u/JWRamzic 1d ago

There's clearly a new standard here: It is ok to kill those whom think differently than you.

In other words, feel free to kill whomever you disagree with.

SMH

52

u/skyfishgoo 1d ago

harassing patients trying to access medical care is not journalism, it's intimidation for clicks—it's rage bait.

this guy was not a journalist.... he's an "influencer" at best a more of a parasite more than anything else.

that said, no one should be assaulting him with a deadly weapon.

assault him with shame and ridicule... shun him.

the number of people i this country that are willing to run someone smooth over has got to be higher than the number of people who own guns. it's getting out of control. road rage...run them over. see someone standing on the side of the road...run the over. someone running on a sidewalk...run them over. someone riding a bicycle...run them over twice. it's beyond wild.

I need someone to explain to me how the general public has reached a very large consensus that literal open public space has an expectation of privacy. We even took the time to name it public, public sidewalk, public roadway, public parks. What do they think is the reason we added the public modifier to all those things for? its like a guy in an RPG wearing full "of the snake gear" and wondering why everything has so much poison resist on it.

u/MuchDevelopment7084 1d ago

He was across the street filming. This is a protected right. You have no expectation of privacy in public.
While he may have been a so-called auditor. Which I generally despise. He's also doing nothing illegal, immoral, or questionable.
That driver however. Needs to be arrested asap.

10

u/madi80085 1d ago

Filming people at a clinic, while not illegal, is arguably immoral. People expect their medical history to be confidential.

Great job immediately calling out the plate! Excellent presence of mind. “You’re invading people’s privacy” there is no expectation of privacy in public. Committing a crime on camera after putting your face clearly on camera is a weird way to try to preserve the privacy you claim to care about lol
