Discussion The easiest $30k this guy ever made

On October 26, 2022, the judge ruled that Walden's contact with Land should have ended when it became clear that Land was not sleeping in the park or in need of assistance, and that the city was not responsible for Walden's actions.

On November 22, 2022, the city settled the lawsuit for $30,000.

Until these settlements are funded SOLELY by the cops pensions nothing will change. They fuck up, tax payer gets the bill. Fuckers.

Nope. Make each individual cop, individually liable for the dumb shit they do.

They aren't plumbers who are trying to unclog a shitter and are allowed to make an "Oopsie". They are carrying lethal firearms and can easily ruin or straight up end someone's life.

That cop should've fucked off the second he didn't wake the guy up. If he suspected he was up to no good he should've taken the initiative to phone his supervisor and confirm that what he was going to do was actually OK.

If he had to pay that 30k out of his own money he'd have done that.

And if the walking sacks of bacon who are shooting people left, right and sideways actually got put in jails with the general population you'd miraculously see a complete cessation of their weirdo nazi behavior.

"Hurr durr but we MUST be able to shoot at newborns who look at us blackishly or society will descend into anarchy!"

Disgusting

They should be required to hold individual insurance that would cover these sorts of scenarios. If they fuck up bad, premium goes up. Eventually, its to costly to maintain and you are forced out as the insurance is a requirement. The system would massively incentivize these sorts of cops to have a second thought about what they are doing because then their money and career could actually be on the line.

1

u/black_dragonfly13 21d ago

They don't deserve "fuck up" insurance. Make them pay the settlement out of their OWN pocket

5

u/InLoveWithInternet 26d ago

They should be fired. That’s quite simple and radical.

In any other job, if you don’t know your job you will eventually get fired.

2

u/RCer1986 25d ago

It should go beyond getting fired imo. They can be, and are, fired for malfeasance. The problem here is that, just like any job sector, they can go somewhere new (almost) regardless of how egregious their violations are. The other problem here is that they're not like any other job sector. The penalty for one of the closest job fields, the military, is a dishonorable discharge which can thoroughly screw up lives.

Cops don't typically have to worry about that kind of penalty. There is the threat of Decertification but standards and penalties vary widely by state, jurisdiction, etc. While a dishonorable discharge will prevent future military service unless congressionally overturned, a Decertification is a far less likely to bar officers from future LE employment. Even though all fifty states use the list for it there are still about 30% of departments that don't participate. There are also substantial loopholes to stay out of the database.

Their terminations need to have some added pain when it comes to getting a new job at a different station/precinct/state/etc. I don't know what the perfect added pain is, it could be mandatory unpaid training, a mandatory period of downtime built on a sliding scale due to severity of the fireable offense, a different pay scale for offenders or anything like that. Whatever it is needs to be standardized and nationalized.

As it stands now they can start over at a new location far too quickly and with almost zero repercussions outside of having to relocate.

u/Cube_ 25d ago

if you want actual change you take it out of their pension, that effects everyone and will result in self-policing far better than individual officers being liable or having malpractice insurance.

if it comes out of the pension there would be top down enforcement

6

u/dwarfinthefla5k 26d ago

No. Take it out of the pension. You think their “brothers in blue” will stand beside them when their wallets lighten? They’ll be cast out.

Tax payers are in part to blame. They can stop voting for the people who allow this shit to happen. Vote in better mayors, who can appoint better police commissioners… etc. Tax payers are complicit.

The way to solve all government problems isn't simply to vote better

It is an important part and the easiest thing we all can do though. A USA wide systematic problem can hardly be solved by going to a city council meeting so I doubt that would be more effective...

7

u/sailphish 26d ago

Correct. But the point is that the people CAN change the system, but choose not to.

6

u/DingleDangleTangle 26d ago edited 26d ago

Your average person has no idea which mayoral candidate they vote for will elect police commisioners that will ensure police never do dumb shit. The ballot doesn't include a vision into the future or policies that have never even been mentioned by the candidates.

Hell, in reality the answer is probably neither of the 2 options they have to vote for.

7

u/Murky-Relation481 26d ago

Then they need to engage earlier in the electoral process. Primaries exist for a reason. Anyone waiting around to the general to only not like the choices is asking for their views to not be heard.

2

u/DingleDangleTangle 26d ago

In a perfect world sure everybody is super politically engaged but that’s just not how reality is. People have full time jobs, kids who have activities they have to attend to, and other responsibilities.

Sure it would be great if everyone was deeply involved in the elections for mayor, city council, county commissioners/supervisors, school board, sheriff, district attorney/prosecutor, county clerk, assessor, treasurer, auditor, coroner, water-district boards, transit boards, community-college boards, library boards, etc. Of course there is also city council meetings, county board meetings, HOA/community stuff and more. Oh and that all is only for local politics, don’t forget state and national which are arguable much more important. An average person may have time to get in depth with like one or two of these elections if any.

5

u/Jaerba 26d ago

Take all the energy they're expending thinking about the Clancey trial and put it towards researching their local election.

Obviously that's not realistic but it illustrates the first point that the electorate is the problem. Our representation represents us.

5

u/DingleDangleTangle 26d ago

Right and the only reason anybody is broke is avacado toast too right? What is this weird Fox News esque strawmanning of an average person?

Pretending everybody has shit tons of free time to participate in the dozens of elections local to them as well as the state and national elections but they are spending all their time on a trial is just innacurate and ridiculous.

1

u/Jaerba 26d ago

Us average Americans enabled our own stereotype when we re-elected Donald Trump. I see no reason to give the average American the benefit of the doubt.

I absolutely guarantee that 99% of the people frothing at the mouth in this thread about pension funds and personal insurance exercise their influence on their government a maximum of once every two years, at which point they simply select the color that supports their pet, single issue. That is if they're Americans of voting age in the first place.

1

u/cheese_is_available 25d ago

Or seizing the mean of propagandazing idk.

1

u/SpiritualTeach2569 26d ago

This is just wrong. It all still comes down to who we pick to lead/represent us. We can do better. Half of our society wants this is the problem

7

u/SilkTieTies 26d ago

A single tax payer is to blame here. If people could let others just lay down for a minute the cop would never have been called.

1

u/sovereign666 26d ago

I generally agree with you but I also think its ok to just go check on people, either yourself or have the cop do it. Last week my motorcycle battery died and I was stuck in a parking lot for a couple hours waiting on a friend. So I laid down. Two different cops stopped by because they saw a motorcycle and a rider laying on the ground. Asked if I was ok and that was that, they left. Another motorist also stopped to do the same.

This interaction never should have amounted to anything more. The cops get a call theres someone laying on the ground in the park, show up, see that he's well and responsive, and leave.

6

u/bluewar40 26d ago

What if the rich take everyone off the ballot who oppose this? Cause that’s the situation in the US and why the “just vote better” advice is so blatantly stupid.

Anyone with sound policies doesn’t get to even be on the ballots. Lmao

0

u/LuxNocte 26d ago

You realize that "Take it out of the cops pensions" is incredibly stupid too, right? If you were looking for a solution that could never actually be implemented, you'd be hard pressed to find a better one.

6

u/AShamanHead1381 26d ago

Unless you live in Kansas City where the state took away the city's ability to control the pig budget and made it Red-State controlled.

3

u/sailphish 26d ago

Then change the government at state level. Enough people are complacent.

2

u/AShamanHead1381 26d ago

Obviously I'm not saying don't vote, I'm saying that when democracy starts to work, republicans change the rules.

3

u/redtiger288 26d ago

Except plenty of times you don't get a choice. Plenty of times in small towns people run unopposed or the different options aren't that different.

1

u/sailphish 26d ago

So run.

3

u/Ucazean 26d ago

This is just straight up victim blaming. Usually your vote for mayor is dogshit 1 versus pigshit 2. Just because you picked the better of the two doesn’t mean they weren’t both bad options

1

u/sailphish 26d ago

If enough people had a problem they could change it. Enough people don’t care. Maybe stop being a victim.

3

u/Ucazean 26d ago

The right people for the job do not want the job. That dates all the way back to the first president big guy. I can only vote for who is on the ballot because I live in reality

3

u/Adulations 26d ago

Cop unions have politicians by the balls

2

u/Meatball2026 26d ago

Tax payers are complicit in every decision made by every officer until when?

Seems like a deliberate attempt to harass people who have more important things going on. Just to prove that you can, if you have the time.

2

u/Own_Conflict222 26d ago

Bro, my district is gerrymandered to shit.

1

u/sailphish 26d ago

Well than I guess you all can just enjoy this type of thing. This sub is full of so many victims.

2

u/Expert_Garlic_2258 tHiS iSn’T cRiNgE 26d ago

if voting could fix the problems, they wouldn't let us vote

3

u/sailphish 26d ago

Well some people are trying to do just that.

5

u/Dapper_Trash_9559 26d ago

Bullshit. There is no "perfect candidate" who can guarantee results at the individual cop level. Plus the tax payers are not a homogenous group.

Then there are are tax payers who didn't vote for the wrong people, and they would have to pay as well.

You would have a valid point if there was a mechanism to guarantee governance, accountability, and a chain-of-events that links the bad cop with the taxpayer who voted for his boss's boss's boss's boss's boss's boss. But when you need so much unrealistic stuff to make it happen... that idea that sounded good turns out to not be so good after all.

2

u/sailphish 26d ago

No, taxpayers aren’t a homogeneous group. But if enough cared, and enough voted, they could vote in people who would make a difference.

2

u/Tossup1010 26d ago

And I could piss hawaiian punch. hypotheticals don't matter if the ones that dont care....dont care. The ones that do care probably see this video and will agree the cop is just doing his due diligence, and that the civilian was wrong to not provide ID, or assume hes homeless and trying to hide it. It's not that many voters are ignorant to the things cops do on a regular basis, they prefer it that way.

2

u/Confident-Version242 26d ago

Oh my God you can't actually believe that...

1

u/No_Money8788 26d ago

To many people focus on big picture. Change starts locally. Organize your block. Then your neighbors. Then the neighborhood, town, city, county, state. Be the change you want to see.

It’s so “easy” to vote for big changes. Then complain shit ain’t getting done. Yes. Change is slow. And ugly but it needs to happen.

1

u/Kelmorgan 26d ago

Guess what side of the political aisle 95% of elected sheriffs are on.

1

u/sailphish 26d ago

OH… they wear red hats on their days off, well when they aren’t wearing white hoods.

1

u/OriginalVictory 26d ago

Unless you're in a blue city where the red legislature has passed rules that the city can't change policing stuff (Texas).

1

u/normalfinnesotan 26d ago

I mean all taxpayers can do is vote for the people who run for the offices, they can't make someone who won't allow this to happen run for mayor or whatever.

1

u/AnybodyAmazing1006 26d ago

The laws are in place, the cops just dont learn them

1

u/FriendlyEbb5662 26d ago

It's usually a choice between a democratic mayor and a republican mayor, and I hate to break it to you but democratic mayors are also very pro-police.

1

u/ElderberryPrior27648 26d ago

No one runs against the status quo

If a candidate ran against the status quo they’d get chased out of politics

1

u/sailphish 26d ago

Rarely, some do.

1

u/Mackinnon29E 26d ago

And not call the cops because someone is fucking laying down. People suck man

1

u/betterwithsambal 23d ago

Nah better to vote for the racist pricks and their policies so you can feel superior to the immigrants and those that don’t have the same skin color or religion as yours. Even if it means endangering your own kids and neighbors to the very racist pricks you voted in.

3

u/BreeBree214 26d ago

I really think that's just going to make cover-ups worse. It needs to hurt only the individual cop and not other cops

2

u/no0ns 26d ago

Not a single cent should be paid by the taxpayer. Each department should have a pension pool that gets used for settlements.

1

u/r0nni3RO 26d ago

They fuck the taxpayer, then taxpayer pays...

They kill the taxpayer, the ones left alive pay...

Land of the free & brave 😂

1

u/red08171 26d ago

Until these settlements are funded SOLELY by the cops pensions nothing will change. They fuck up, tax payer gets the bill. Fuckers.

we all know this yet no one is lobbying for it to happen. fuck. Let's all start asking these question to potential candidates. I tried to run once and was absolutely destroyed for being compassionate.

1

u/Wreckit-Jon 26d ago

But instead the fine people watching this video funded it. Good 'ol tax money hard at work.

1

u/eoz 26d ago

i mean, fuck, if the city even had the balls to simply take it out of the policing budget so that the police department had to think carefully about who to lay off, and a cop who keeps costing them money...

1

u/PyroNine9 26d ago

Nevermind the pension fund, take it out of payroll. Let the officers discuss among themselves if the hit should be spread evenly or paid by the cop who screwed up.

1

u/Mission_Macaroon 26d ago

Good point. If I was an unethical cop, I might intentionally arrest an accomplice without cause for a cut of the settlement paid by the city. No repercussions too, I bet (except some nice bonus paid leave).

1

u/Ilpav123 26d ago

and the cops get a paid vacation.

1

u/dokkababecallme 26d ago

Fuck a PENSION.

Out of their PAYCHECK. Garnishments man.

If the dollar amount means they'd have to be garnished for more than X years, rope the city into it as well. Idk, someone smarter than me can figure it out.

You think this dude wouldn't have walked the fuck away (the cop) if he knew a false arrest would cost him 30k in "adult child support" wage garnishment?

The incidence rate of this stupid shit would go to fucking ZERO overnight.

1

u/LetsBeFRTho 26d ago

Instead people would rather vote on trans issues and banning which bathrooms they can use instead of actual issues plaguing their county

1

u/Several-Bluejay-190 26d ago

this is the system working as intended. there are a handful of cases that support cops being extremely ignorant of the law

1

u/billbixbyakahulk 26d ago edited 26d ago

Yes, I'm sure it would go great if every mistake you ever made at your job - intentional or not - could be deducted out of your paycheck. Edit: and to be clear - I'm not saying the cop isn't a douchebag. I'm saying your 'solution' is nonsense. The solution is to discipline the cop, and if that fails, fire them.

1

u/Future-Watercress829 26d ago

Or make cops get professional liability insurance. Have it come first out of that insurance, and it makes that individual cop more costly to insure & less likely to be hired.

-1

u/FaZaCon 26d ago

Until these settlements are funded SOLELY by the cops pensions

That's the dumbest fucking thing, right up there with dEfUnD dA PoLiCe. Cops wont engage suspects at all if they know their finances will be affected. Might as well not have law enforcement, and let the gangs take over. The idiot supervisor on duty should have known better and told that dumbass rookie cop he was wrong to arrest that guy.

4

u/ImminentDingo 26d ago

Doctors still seem to perform medicine even though there are consequences for harming people. Same applies to literally every profession where being bad at your job has consequences.

0

u/FaZaCon 26d ago

Doctors still seem to perform medicine even though there are consequences for harming people.

They carry, and can afford malpractice insurance.

2

u/ImminentDingo 26d ago

That's my point. Despite massive consequences for fucking up, they still do their jobs, and so does everyone else.

0

u/canijusttalkmaybe 26d ago

It's not that big of a deal.
