Discussion This is a disaster waiting to happen.

The dog isn’t allowed to be around a toddler because he growls at her. I don’t get it. A family dog is supposed to get along with the whole family. Why are the parents concerned about why the dog “doesn’t like her”? What about the child’s safety?

Chows are great. I could never handle them just because of the amount of slobber but they are also very fierce dogs. People often mistake big and fluffy for mild manner. Were the parents also at the party?

Yeah, it would have been a very hard lawsuit for you to win either way. Even if the parents failed by allowing their son to be a menace, your parents would have been held responsible if the party was taking place at your house and the dog was not restricted somewhere (in a closed room) where guests couldn't aggro it. No court would blame the child for the "BOO" or the child's parents even if they were there.

The amount of people I've seen lose dog cases is insane. A friend is still paying super high premiums to this day because someone sued her home owners insurance after being bit in an almost similar situation to yours. And the person bit was an adult. It's never worth it to have a dog that responds with aggression around people you can't trust not trigger it knowingly or unknowingly, especially children. Children are stupid and do stupid things but it will still be your fault.

Parents were there. Kid snuck off into the closed basement to provoke the dog. Only reason we know exactly what happened was another adult saw it through the sliding glass door to the lower part of the back yard.

The dog did back off immediately after the bite as well, it was entirely reflexive, and we’d had no incidents before this for the 5 years we’d had him.

That sucks then. Especially since the parents were also there then your parents weren't fully responsible for watching him. I'm surprised they made you guys put down a dog with no other history of bites. Sad all around. His parents really failed him by the sounds of it.

I had a dog who was blind in one eye and would reflexively react like that when startled. I told everyone who came over: don't sneak up on him because he will bite. He was a toy breed so he couldn't do much damage, but he had that reflex. My current dog is so gentle, he will let you pet him while he's sleeping. It's hard to feel pity for someone who knowingly provokes an anxious animal.

I'm so sorry for your dog

Yeah, sure. Your parents KNEW (as did all of the other parents and kids) that the dog was reflexive. You would have lost that lawsuit.

Dog should have been locked up; sorry

It sounds like the dog WAS locked up, but the kid ignored this and antagonized it anyway.

The dog was locked up, since reading is hard

Says “closed” not “locked”, but either way maybe don’t have parties where it’s easy enough to open (or unlock) an area to access a dog that “matches the energy” aka turns aggressive. Dogs are gonna dog but kids are gonna kid.

Please be so fr, the dog was IN THE BASEMENT aka deliberately kept out of the way of the party guests and this dumbass kid was repeatedly warned not to go down there or antagonize him. Blaming the dog/family in this scenario would be like blaming them for not locking their kitchen if some idiot kid touched a hot stove and burned himself or something.

When I was in high school, my gf’s dad had 3 chows. The first time I went to her house to meet her parents, I met the dogs, too. They were chill. But also, very “we can eat you and nobody will ever know”. One night she called me and said to come over bc her parents weren’t home. Rather than thinking “hot damn”, I thought “unparented chows”. I went over there. But stayed very outside.

That was actually all part of the dad's plan. Brilliant 😆

Chows aren’t immune. It’s well known that small dog breeds are very dangerous for small children.

My best friend got attacked by a chow he knew. He was walking down the street on the opposite side and a dog he had been around hundreds of times before came running from the yard across the street and bit him, unprovoked.
