Discussion This is a disaster waiting to happen.

The dog isn’t allowed to be around a toddler because he growls at her. I don’t get it. A family dog is supposed to get along with the whole family. Why are the parents concerned about why the dog “doesn’t like her”? What about the child’s safety?

My first memory is being bit in the face by a dog. I don’t know why 3 year old me was left alone with a dog we were dog sitting.

Edit: it was a border collie

I was 3 too, Christmas eve and bitten on the cheek by a Rottweiler. My dad wouldn't let me sit in the cab because of the blood. I had to sit in the truck bed with my mom on the way to get stitches. One of my earliest memories.

I’m sorry about the Rottweiler and your dad in that case, i can’t imagine forcing a hurt child to ride in the bed of a truck to go to the hospital

thank you, he wasn't a very kind man

Same here (Dalmatian). My mom still blames me for getting up next to the dog and making high-pitched sounds...you know, like any three year old might do to try and play with something.

Because your guardians were dumb enough to believe the “nanny dog” myth.

Where did the person you're replying to specify the breed of dog? Any dog can bite, and when a dog bites a 3yo, it's usually going to be in the face.

Word.

TLDR: Also word, but more story.

It could have been a cocker spaniel which is the first dog that ever bit me. After years of living in low income housing with pitbulls, rotties, doberman etc. everyone had one of those "for protection" so I grew up around dogs and knew how to act around them.

I never had any issues until my family got money and moved to the suburbs (yes I think the suburbs is rich, sue me lol) and I met little dogs.

I had seen a few here or there out in public because I'm old and this was the era of the tiny dog in a purse fashion. And I had seen those, but they were shivering docile Jell-O dogs. Made of no substance, and constantly quivering, also making me slightly uncomfortable like when I remember Jell-O and Bill Cosby flashes in my head.

But the suburbs love Jell-O dogs and I was in a new world of them. Well my HS boyfriend's parents had 2, a weenie dog and the aforementioned cocker spaniel. Well, they went out of town one weekend and asked me to watch the dogs and the house. I wanted to leave the best impression because they were also really strict and super Christian. I was trying to convert and be accepted from my heathen household (lol).

Anyway, I'm busting my ass caring for their acres of farm and the dogs and what not. And I'm getting ready to feed the dogs and I'm grabbing the food bowl and the dogs start to get in a scuffle. Over the EMPTY bowl 🙄. At first it seemed like it was a light disagreement, I was gonna let the dogs do dog things.

But the CS was biting that weenie and he cried in a way that was NOT cool. So I reached down to pick him up and the CS saw my hand and literally attacked it.

Now I know often times when you reach into a dog fight, your hand gets bitten accidentally, cuz the dogs trying to bite the other dog. But the cocker spaniel literally saw my hand and chose to bite it. I watched the wheels turn in his stupid fucking head.

Then he wouldn't let go once he had my hand. So I literally had to pick him up and basically fling him against the couch, like it was some poorly written Will Ferrell movie.

He hated me forever after that. Would never listen to anything I told him to do and would always try to attack me. God I hated that little fuck so much.

my dad (when he was young) was attacked by a german shepherd (i don’t remember if it was a k9 or regular dog) but it HOPPED THE FENCE to attack him

Whoa, super defensive much? Idiot owners of other dog breeds also believe their dog is a nanny dog. It’s a terrible thing to believe about any dog.

The "nanny dog" myth is specifically about pit bulls, though. If you're assuming that every violent dog must be a pit bull, like littlecactuscat seems to, you're not going to notice that your Golden Retriever is going stiff and making whale eyes whenever your toddler passes its food bowl.

Pitbulls are responsible for mauling children more than any other dog breed combined. Killing is what they were bred for.

Ok. Did you read the thread? Point me to where O_Pluto_O said the dog that bit them was a pit.

They didn't say anything at all bout the thread. Just stated a random fact as far as I can tell. A true and valid random fact.

64-66% of all dog-related deaths are from pit bull breed dogs. That is in fact more than all others combined by a good margin.

To be fair, pit bull/bully breeds make up about 20% of the US dog population. There are other variables that play a part in this. For example, irresponsible/dirt bag dog owners are likely going to elect the $50-$75 adoption fee from a shelter as opposed to visiting a breeder. Pits make up between 20%-60% of dog breeds in shelters. So the odds that those irresponsible/dirt bag dog owners end up with a Pitbull is pretty good.

Not trying to dismiss how dangerous they're capable of being if left unchecked, but I bet if Huskies made up 60% of shelter dogs, their in involvement in dog-related deaths would be dramatically higher as well.

Fighting is what they were bred for.

Part of the reason the good ones do better around children than other breeds is because of their higher pain tolerance. Children can fall and jump on them, or grab at their face or tug their ears and it'll annoy the dog at worst.

Do that shit to a chow or dalmatian. It'll be a different experience.

*This isn't me suggesting that all Pitbulls behave this way. There's plenty of dangerous ones out there that I wouldn't want anywhere near me, let alone children.

Yeah that must have been really traumatizing. I had a cat that bit me when I was that age and I was afraid of that cat forever lol I can't imagine how you feel with a dog

Dogs are my life lmao I love them more than anything. But I will freeze up and basically have a panic attack if a dog runs at me aggressively. I currently own a dingo mix that my life basically revolves around. I am so careful of her being aggressive with people, I won't have a bite happen on my watch.

I have an Akita, a big dangerous breed. She is exceptionally well behaved around people and I have never seen her act aggressive towards anyone. She is even more gentle around my 4 year old daughter. Still I would absolutely never leave those 2 in a room alone together. I keep having to tell family members I don’t care how good they are with each other it’s just a no.

My grandmother was mauled by a collie when she was a little girl (1930s)

She was doing some kind of school/donation thing and knocked on a neighbor’s door… the collie blasted straight through it like the Kool-Aid man and bit her face and arms.

A different neighbor had to shoot it, and then BREAK INTO another neighbor’s house to call for help because they were the only ones in the neighborhood with a telephone (and there were no cars cuz everyone who had one drove it to work)
