Just a guess. Gym saw a guy recording behind a person not knowing it was a father son. Maybe they have a no recording in the gym policy.

They overreacted, called the police, and it turned into an issue of "a business asked you to leave the premises" and the guy kind of refusing to leave. Just a non biased look at it though.

But if they got a membership there, it should have just been "hey no recording man" and that's it

546

u/_autumnwhimsy Jul 27 '26

so what happened was the guy brought his son in and they asked for a valid id. his son is a teenage and doesn't have a drivers license. dad showed his id and his son's school record on their online portal. they fussed back and forth because management didn't want to accept it but not accepting it is in clear violation of their own guest policy.

now it gets murky because the video starts with them working out BUT we find out no one asked him to leave so because of that i'm guessing they allowed them in and then took it back and escalated via calling the police.

so nothing to do with recording. the comment right below yours by u/ onlytinglef has links to everything.

Had a similar issue with my kid. The issue was that I had to sign a “I won’t sue you “ agreement, but instead of telling us that, we had a condescending jerk question us. I was happy to sign the paperwork after we were treated like thieves. Afterwords I cancelled my membership ( that I had for 6 years and went maybe 4 times). My son and daughter also cancelled. We now go to the local rec center that is super chill.

u/Mutajin Jul 27 '26

You could cancel your gym membership?!?

50

u/ero_sennin_21 Jul 27 '26

I want to quit the bank!

11

u/BrosefDudeson Jul 27 '26

After going fewer times than once a year, I think he was as surprised as you are

10

u/drthtater Jul 27 '26

I once cancelled my PLANET FITNESS membership. I walked in, said, "I want to cancel my membership" while expecting a fight, and the bored girl working the counter said "Ok".

I suppose I am one of the lucky ones.

3

u/ShaNaNaNa666 Jul 27 '26

If you're in CA, there's a law that makes it so that once you want to cancel a subscription, you can cancel it online. I didn't know until I saw on reddit. People were advising others if they wanted to cancel a gym membership to change their address to one in CA, and the other one cancel online.

2

u/drthtater Jul 27 '26

At the time, it was Colorado, but it was still super easy

3

u/queerhistorynerd Jul 27 '26

one of the perks of living in CA is they have to let you quit or the state can and will levy fines at the gym after X amount of complaints

5

u/Apprehensive-Egg-780 Jul 27 '26

It was probably Maria's day off

2

u/Lucky_Serve8002 Jul 27 '26

The account is stewing in collections. He just doesn't know it yet.

1

u/Luder714 Jul 27 '26

Yes, because I was actually there in person. That is the only way at this place

1

u/Mr_Deep_Research Jul 28 '26

Yeah, that's the most unbelievable part of that story.

1

u/sernamenotdefined Aug 02 '26

Hehe that used to be a thing here too.

But EU and consumer protections ... they changed the law and now cancelling must be accepted as easily and by the same means as signing up. So it's really really easy to cancel now.

A few gyms were a bit dense and tried to ignore it, but after losing in court and being forced to pay the court cost now it's no longer an issue anywhere :P

12

u/bigboredbossman Jul 27 '26

I had a membership where I could always bring an extra person for free. When my son was 12, he wanted to start going with me so I’d take him and supervise him on the weight machines. After a few months, I had an employee refuse to allow us in the floor because he claimed it was a state law that no one under 13 was allowed on the floor. I cancelled my membership and joined our local sportsplex that allows kids as young as 10 into the gym with adult supervision.

I live in Alabama and we have some really stupid laws on the books but not even my dumbass state is gonna go to the trouble of making it illegal for a 12 year old to go to the gym with his dad.

6

u/Reverend_Tommy Jul 27 '26

Often it's not a law but an insurance issue. Their insurance won't cover anyone under a certain age. Employees often don't know the difference and just assume it's a law.

8

u/bigboredbossman Jul 27 '26

I figured it was a company policy but that guy trying to tell me it was a state law got under my skin.

2

u/indianm_rk Jul 27 '26

Sometimes the company or a manager tells you something and you just go with it because you don’t care enough to research it.

I worked for a retail chain and found out later that several of our “store policies” weren’t actually corporate policies, but things that our store managers came up with.

2

u/Thasauce7777 Jul 27 '26

So wild to me they came at you with a condescending tone, when the request is a reasonable and understandable one to begin with (especially if it's a policy because it's already happened to them). I just don't see the value on their end in not be up front and direct about that issue with people that mention they plan on bringing their family on with them.

1

u/AlcoholPrep Jul 27 '26

You went FOUR TIMES in only six years! That's far too much. Gyms want you to pay and NOT to come at all!

3

u/GirlWithWolf Cringe Connoisseur Jul 27 '26

I can imagine why they didn’t want to accept it. In May I went with my white girlfriend to get our driving permits. Her mom was with her, my brother (we’re native) with me (he was my guardian). We had the exact same documentation except I had one extra, my tribal ID. We got called to different windows at the same time. Ten minutes later they snapped her picture and printed her permit. Nearly an hour later, after getting supervisors involved multiple times, I finally got mine.

Things like this aren’t random or misunderstandings.

2

u/eekamuse Jul 27 '26

So he didn't do anything wrong and they gym guy called the cops on him. Which can get a Black man killed. Naturally, he's upset and angry. And all the people commenting that he's the one who must have done something wrong, and "what happened before the video?" are showing their bias, unconscious or not. They have no information but assumed that it was the Black man's fault. Disgusting.

2

u/SaengerBachus Jul 27 '26

Of course it was a white dude.. Must be really scary to be a POC in the states, when every police encounter could be a danger to get arrested or get shotted. Only because a white Karen has an attitude..

3

u/Kind_Move2521 Jul 27 '26

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

youre so out of touch with reality and this comment is so objectively stupid. Also, "get shotted"? lmao I see what's going on here now

1

u/S0l1DTvirusSnak3 Jul 27 '26

Ah ok this makes sense to be fair the kid shouldn't be in there without correct I'd I thought maybe they thought he was a pedo or something 😆

2

u/_autumnwhimsy Jul 27 '26

Well they had Id, just not a drivers license lol most teens don't have drivers licenses so

1

u/Thasauce7777 Jul 27 '26

So is the risk here that they have no actual evidence that the minor he was training was his son (due to not having an ID) and not some random youth? I can see that be a significant liability/insurance issue for the gym if a minor gets hurt there and they later find out that the minor didn't have permission to be there in the first place. I don't think it would be necessary to call the cops on thos though, just explain it to the guy, then call the cops if it continues to escalate several levels above that.

4

u/_autumnwhimsy Jul 27 '26

They had a virtual id, just not a physical one. Most kids don't have a drivers licenses, which is what they were specifically requesting. Also student athletes go and work out at public gyms a the time so having minors in the facility isn't typically a problem, they just need a parent to sign the waiver. They had the parent there so I doubt that was an issue.

I think this started as bruised ego on the gym owners part and he retaliated and escalated with racism.

2

u/Thasauce7777 Jul 27 '26

Ahh, understood. Thanks for the added context. This is a using the id to make a mountain out of a molehill type situation.

1

u/Numeno230n Jul 27 '26

Not talking to them or at least informing them they need to leave before calling the fucking police is absolute racist escalation.

1

u/fadriansquest Jul 27 '26

He obviously ignored the staff and deemed the ID worthy, even though they told him it’s not. So yeah u can’t do that.
And something doesn’t make sense here, if they only accept a drivers license then it means kids under 16 are not allowed. Either that or their policy must allow for some way to verify a 14 year old, if they actually do allow kids in the gym.
I wonder what that policy actually is, and I’ll bet it’s public knowledge. Maybe dad forgot or didn’t realize or whatever, but you can’t just ignore staff and do what you want anyway. Race baiting title, just bring valid ID for ur son bro, no one cares that ur black.

1

u/_autumnwhimsy Jul 27 '26

student athletes without drivers licenses work out at crunch all the time, they just need a waiver signed by a parent on file. the parent is there so getting a waiver wouldn't have been the problem.

"valid ID" varies and it sounds like there isn't consistent application of the rule on file. a school id is often considered a valid id for someone under 18 and is typically the only piece of ID a kid would have (unless they have a passport). The school ID was provided but it was a virtual card on the school portal and not a physical card. Now, if they TSA/federal government can accept my drivers licenses virtually, then Crunch Fitness can accept a virtual school id.

and he didn't ignore the staff, they confirmed that they did NOT ask him to leave. so someone let them in and then doubled back. which means they escalated before the basic first step. we have the data that shows police escalate frivolously with everyone but engage in excessive force and brutality even more so when interacting with black people. calling the cops when you could have just asked him to leave while knowing that black people have been shot and killed for way less is indeed racial violence

1

u/fadriansquest Jul 27 '26

Did the OP follow the policy? Or did the staff just free style it and double triple down on it? Cus if they did then OP just get the guy fired no need to do a race bait tik tok. I’m just trying to think what most likely actually happened cus all we have is OPs take on it. Ur acting like the OP only has to listen to staff if they say, “sir can u please leave”. They can also say sorry he can’t come in and it means the same thing. It means the minor cannot use the gym. The dad has a valid ID he can work out all he wants they can’t kick him out. It’s the son that’s the issue. The fact he’s like, but they never said leave, is like ok bro what about all the other stuff they said did u ignore all that? U really think they said, “that’s not a valid id but go ahead and start working out together”? Ridiculous take. And cut the shit dude the police were fully cordial, just doing their job. It’s literally all on video. They got called out because someone was refusing to listen to the staff. Maybe he only had to leave after he caused a scene. Maybe at first they said u can work out no problem be he (the son) can’t. We don’t know cus it’s not on video but I find that ppl are more likely normal rather than racist for no reason, especially if they’re some young dudes working at crunch fitness.

1

u/Upstairs-Growth3219 Jul 27 '26

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Crunch guest policy states:

"Certain memberships have free guest privileges. The best way to find out about your club and/or membership guest policy is to contact your location of interest"

So it seems to be determined by the specific location, and I don't think a school ID is considered a state issued ID, which their guest pass requires (different from a member bringing a guest, but still relevant to the conversation, as perhaps some locations require it for members bringing a guest. Just a thought)

If he wasn't asked to leave and they just called the police that's definitely not the way to go about the situation, there seems to be a lot of missing context here though. I want to read what u/ onlytinglef wrote but I can't seem to find the specific comment your referring to.

1

u/_autumnwhimsy Jul 27 '26

he wasn't asked to leave, the staff confirm as much in the video available. and it looks like the comment was deleted which sucks lmao they had all the ig links and everything.

1

u/Upstairs-Growth3219 Jul 27 '26

At what point do the staff confirm that he wasn't asked to leave in the video? I can see them talking and gesturing but I can't hear what they're saying

1

u/Jamb9876 Jul 28 '26

I expect crunch fitness will be firing people as this makes the company look bad and rightly so. If he can show a white man and son working out it is easy to show racism.
Rather than ask him to leave they decided to call the donut patrol to hopefully remove him.

1

u/Mindless-Peak-1687 Jul 27 '26

Nope, none afsked him to leave, part of the video.

-6

u/Competitive-Plenty32 Jul 27 '26

Yeah they can’t trespass someone unless they’ve been asked to leave first. None of my guests have ever been asked for an ID either sooo I think the staff were in the wrong, but it’s their discretion as a predicate business to ask anybody to leave.

8

u/Freshies00 Jul 27 '26

And the staff asked him to leave because once it got to that point it was to save their own face

252

u/tigm2161130 Jul 27 '26

Crunch definitely does not have that policy, they’re like borderline an “influencer” gym.

56

u/Special-Cricket4882 Jul 27 '26

Borderline an influencer gym is crazy they have memberships for $10 a month haha it gets so busy there's not space to record yourself

65

u/NoMansSkyWasAlright Jul 27 '26

Well yeah, man. That's how you get the influencers in there. Most of them are broke as shit.

2

u/OuterWildsVentures Jul 27 '26

I've got nipples, Greg. Could you influence me?

1

u/Mistrblank Jul 27 '26

I know that's the quote...but I think you may have that backwards.

1

u/tigm2161130 Jul 27 '26

I’m pretty sure the cheap membership is what attracts them and all of the people filming at the location nearest me is one of the reasons I went back to Lifetime so I know for a fact it’s not “too crowded” to record.

1

u/Playful_Essay_5821 Jul 27 '26

Nobody goes to the Crunch gym to record their workouts if they're a serious streamer or influencer. Crunch is a step above planet fitness

1

u/Spicynoodlez Jul 27 '26

Good luck cancelling.

You have a fee if you try to cancel.

2

u/punkdrummer22 Jul 27 '26

What? The Crunch gym i go to is great. The odd person recording. Very rare though

284

u/Accomplished_Mind792 Jul 27 '26

The shit part is they don't seem to have asked him to leave.

So the cops were unnecessary

They also weren't revoking his membership so they aren't saying he did anything.

Only at the end did they ask him to leave by blaming him for there being a scene. Which is ironic from the people who called the cops

92

u/JonnyTN Jul 27 '26

Too true on the last part. Gym made the scene happen

4

u/Ambisextrous2017 Jul 27 '26

Fukin gyms.

6

u/diurnal_emissions Jul 27 '26

Only smart people work at them. How could this happen?!?

2

u/JonnyTN Jul 27 '26

The Apple geniuses run the gyms too?

2

u/diurnal_emissions Jul 27 '26

Gentrification can happen anywhere...

149

u/jmtyndall Jul 27 '26

They arent revoking his membership because to get outta them payments he needs to send a hand written request signed in blood and notarized by the president to the gym ownership via carrier pigeon and have it arrive between 2:15pm and 2:25pm on an odd-dated Wednesday of an even numbered month

52

u/PlantainPat Jul 27 '26

I was at a crunch recently and a woman was crying explaining to the dude at the desk that she had come by 4 times to cancel her membership (cant cancel via email/online if you aren't from CA) and their managers were always "in a meeting" and unable to help her as they sat in their guest tables together 10 feet away.

So you aren't wrong. This place is definitely going to be the new planet/la fitness trapped in you in a membership we don't want to let you out of

42

u/Ser_VimesGoT Jul 27 '26

Should be a requirement by law that you be able to cancel any membership or subscription in a reasonable manner.

37

u/BeanWaiting4CeMoment Jul 27 '26

In 2024, the FTC made a rule that companies had to make it as easy to cancel as it was to sign up. Unfortunately, the courts struck it down in July of last year.

18

u/absawd_4om Jul 27 '26

The fruits of corruption, oh lobbying.

7

u/mandala1 Jul 27 '26

Lina khan was truly the goat

5

u/BeanWaiting4CeMoment Jul 27 '26

Absolute queen among thieves

3

u/BiZzles14 Jul 27 '26

Democrats in office vs. Republicans in office

2

u/davexa Jul 27 '26

Well they can fuck right off. I’ll just pass on signing up for gym membership…yeah.

9

u/Toadcola Jul 27 '26

Too bad the oligarchs gutted the CFPB. So much winning, for them.

3

u/NO_FIX_AUTOCORRECT Jul 27 '26

They tried to add rules like that but Republicans blocked it

1

u/Ser_VimesGoT Jul 27 '26

I know they're the absolute worst but what would be the justification for that? What do they gain?

1

u/Korashy Jul 27 '26

What do they gain?

The United States Dollar

1

u/TheoryNew1736 Jul 27 '26

Not sure if it works everywhere, but when I lived in NV and wanted to cancel my gym membership without a fuss all it took was going onto the website and changing my address to a random one in CA. Did that and hit refresh and suddenly there was a button to cancel on the page.

1

u/fallingfeelslikefly Jul 28 '26

It's law here in Mamdanistan!

3

u/SnoopFoxyFox Jul 27 '26

I would just cancel the card it's on, or leave the account with no money. They'll get the hint.

1

u/ShorelineStrider Jul 27 '26

I had to get my bank involved to get out of a local gym membership....after I moved away. Just showed proof of attempts to cancel. It was easier than jumping through the gym's hoops.

1

u/cassavetes Jul 27 '26

Private Equity acquisition just last year. Stay away from them.

https://pesqueeze.com/company/crunch-fitness

1

u/fresh-dork Jul 27 '26

i'd just stand in the lobby and make a scene - chant I WANNA CANCEL on repeat until someone showed up

1

u/RealSociety6433 Jul 27 '26

It took me 2 weeks of calls and a letter mailed to Crunch to get out of my membership

-2

u/Thick-Giraffe1710 Jul 27 '26

It’s easy, stop paying.

2

u/winterwarm78654 Jul 27 '26

I sent 3 letters already because I moved and none around me yet they still got me active at this point I'm gonna just sue for back payments and hassle. Especially since I've sent it through postal and recorded it

2

u/Socks-in-a-can Jul 27 '26

You forgot that it has to be a blue moon that night.

1

u/Melodic_Policy765 Jul 27 '26

I managed to do all of this to get my niece out of a gym membership. It was rough, but I was loud and persistent.

1

u/dlsisnumerouno Jul 27 '26

This is all too familiar.

1

u/fadriansquest Jul 27 '26

Why would they need to ask him to leave if they already told him he can’t work out without a proper ID. They already told him he couldn’t be there. Guy broke the rule by ignoring and working out anyway - then the old, “but you never said to leave”. Selective hearing I guess?

1

u/ShaNaNaNa666 Jul 27 '26

Can't believe the cop didn't give the employees shit for wasting his time.

1

u/Woodpecker-Lobotomy Jul 28 '26

wasting his time

Are you kidding? This is what cops love doing the most.

5

u/user-the-name Jul 27 '26

Just a guess.

Just a non biased look at it though

Picks a bias, claims to be non-biased.

30

u/Bubbly-End-6156 Jul 27 '26

They overreacted to what? Seeing a Black man? What was there to overreact about?

52

u/xxanity Jul 27 '26

the overreact is calling the police to get him removed without having asked him to leave first.

55

u/BadDragonLove69 Jul 27 '26

Even the most charitable read of the situation is that the employees were too scared to interact with black men so they called the police.

23

u/xxanity Jul 27 '26

i can picture them hearing the dude say have the manager come see me, read as threatening due to them being pussies for sure.

59

u/BakedNotFriedOG Jul 27 '26

An adult filming a child is my guess

26

u/killertortilla Jul 27 '26

So they just happened to miss them talking to each other and everything being fine, and jumped straight to a crime? Nah man just call a duck a duck.

4

u/INSANEBonF Jul 27 '26

Bro, stick to weed and not devil's advocate. He doesnt need a slug to help him out.

1

u/BakedNotFriedOG Jul 27 '26

Wtf are you talking about

1

u/Bubbly-End-6156 Jul 27 '26

Anything to not admit what is actually happening.

2

u/BakedNotFriedOG Jul 27 '26

Must be tough going through life always being the victim.

1

u/Bubbly-End-6156 Jul 28 '26

A victim? My father gets followed parking in his driveway because it's an upper class neighborhood and they try an arrest him for robbery?

My uncle had two dozen guns drawn on him for getting gas at 11pm. For being Black.

Pattern recognition is not being a victim. Not being able to live after a speeding ticket is not being a victim.

28

u/SyllabubMental7292 Jul 27 '26

Seeing a black man.

9

u/IkujaKatsumaji Jul 27 '26

I mean, if they have a no recording policy, then they overreacted to a violation of that policy. Did you read the comment you replied to?

3

u/Bubbly-End-6156 Jul 27 '26

There's no reason to think they have a no recording policy except that you guys want any excuse to not admit to racism.

12

u/gideon513 Jul 27 '26

If if if

3

u/30secMAN Jul 27 '26

lol the comment he’s referring to starts with “just a guess”. Dude asked for an explanation when we get none of the actual confrontation and all of the fallout on video. Of course it’s all ifs. The fuck are you on about?

2

u/Sarik704 Jul 27 '26

And lets ask a critical question. WHY DID THEY OVER REACT!?

2

u/The_Monarch_Lives Jul 27 '26

Seems from the video that they didn't tell him to leave at any time until the very end, and specifically told him he COULDN'T leave(presumably because they had already called the police) earlier. Just to clear up that portion.

2

u/Upstairs-Growth3219 Jul 27 '26

Emphasis on the "just a guess" part. Too many people take their stories and run with them. Sometimes it's best to acknowledge what we don't know. Filling in the missing spaces with speculation can cause more problems than they solve.

1

u/JonnyTN Jul 27 '26

So much. A few people replied not knowing what the definition of a guess is.

It's just forming an opinion, give an answer, or make a prediction without having enough facts or evidence to be sure.

It's not solid what I think. Glad we found the evidence somewhat of what happened

1

u/Suntzu_AU Jul 27 '26

I think maybe his son doesn't have a membership, so father's just brought him in for the day, and because his son doesn't have a membership, he's not covered by insurance or whatever, so they've asked him to leave. And they haven't handled it properly at all.

1

u/The_Monarch_Lives Jul 27 '26

In the video it's explicit that they had not asked him to leave. In fact, they told him he couldn't leave.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '26

[deleted]

1

u/JonnyTN Jul 27 '26

Because people can venture a guess

1

u/Apart_Long_1832 Jul 27 '26

NO, the Devil in details: Yes, Crunch Gym allows you to bring a guest every day, but only if you have a top-tier Peak Results or Signature membership that includes unlimited guest privileges. Lower-tier memberships like the Base plan do not include free daily guest passes

1

u/JonnyTN Jul 27 '26

I didn't know it was about membership when I made the comment

1

u/Jon-A Jul 27 '26

Interesting that your 'guess' invents a cover story that supports the business over the black guy, while glossing over any possible malign intentions. And that your conjecture is unrelated to the facts, but might instead reveal something about you.

1

u/JonnyTN Jul 27 '26

It just is neutral guess that also includes regular rules of a gym? I'm black as well

1

u/Sad-Development-4153 Jul 28 '26

Gym staff are usually huge cowards about enforcing their own rules so them calling the cops tracks.

1

u/JohnAndertonOntheRun Jul 27 '26

It’s very clearly about the man bringing in an unregistered guest…

His son.

9

u/TempAcct20005 Jul 27 '26

Crunch let’s you bring in one guest

1

u/docfronkensteen Jul 27 '26

Racism apologist ‘guess’

1

u/This-is-Actual Jul 27 '26

Why would you spend all that time typing up your incorrect guess, when you could have just googled the correct answer?

0

u/BliXkface Jul 27 '26

That’s a terrible guess, even if you are right, that’s a terrible guess. He probably brought his son and his son doesn’t have a membership. Which my Dad and Uncle used to do with me and my cousins all the time, a couple times we got caught by corny staff and we just paid for the day, most the time we just walked right in.

-1

u/JonnyTN Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

It's a guess. And plausible.

Guy is recording behind a teen. Guesses don't have to be 100% fact. They are by definition something you presume before evidence, complete facts, or certainty

But someone in the comments posted an hour ago what really happened.

-2

u/Blueberrypunchout Jul 27 '26

I'm a law student, this is an easy win for the man. There's so many things the staff did wrong here, not to mention the police officer.
