There's a growing online trend of people taking down Flock cameras. Entire Facebook groups dedicated to it and tik tok/instagram reels of people doing it as well. Probably the best trend we've seen for awhile

824

u/goatneedleposterdeck Jul 26 '26

I don't ever remember these cameras being a thing ever. Was there a vote at some point to their use? I woke up one morning and saw a post about people destroying them, and when I looked around as I drove to work, I noticed sooooo many of them. I can't imagine anybody being okay with this. No shot it's only scanning plates and alerting cops to active investigations. This will definitely or already does scan faces and track activity. It's alerting cops to unpaid traffic tickets and small things as well. How the hell did we end up in a chinese surveillance state over fucking night? Bless all these dudes risking their freedom to take them down. Bunch of bullshit.

Recent story was that the township required all purchases greater than $150k to go to the council to vote on.

So Flock charged $149,900 and the police chief didn't need any approval.

Go to your local meetings. They're super important.

I got the numbers wrong, here's the DIRECT QUOTE from THE SHERIFF who did it:

" “It became clear that national politics was weighing into the discussions regarding drones and license plate readers,” Wise said. “It became clear to me that the only way for this pilot to move forward with a test run was to work for a vendor to operate a contract that I could sign of under $175,000.”

The final contract came in at $174,999.

“This was deliberately done to make sure there were no legal issues tied to the dollar amount,” Wise said."

Doesn't matter i dont remember the exact numbers but at a meeting in my state there was only 1 single person yhat got up to give a support for a yes votes and tens of people somewhere over 50 that got up to talk and say no. They still voted yes that night.

76

u/Wow_u_sure_r_dumb Jul 26 '26

Next step is to get the info for everyone opposed at the meeting and organize. Organize a recall if possible, vote them out next primary or general if not. We have to get anti surveillance anti data center candidates on the ballot.

24

u/quixote_manche Jul 27 '26

In the meantime, do as suggested in the video.

20

u/Eternal-Blazing-Sun Jul 27 '26

The video isnt suggesting people do anything!

But people should excercise their right to privacy in their own community, however they feel is appropriate

In my state you can look at the secretary of state website and see what businesses are owned by an individual. A lot of these board members have "charitable" organizations. When they do, there is a high chance it is to receive illicit funds.

u/MajorEstateCar Jul 27 '26

Most cities now have provisions for this kind of “loophole” with policies that explicitly prohibit the practice of trying to conceal a purchase by sliding under a threshold with the penalty being termination. If they can justify that the market price is actually $149k, they’re clear. If the first quote was $200k and then the second is “magically” $149,900, they could be fired and the purchase annulled.

Many folks like police chiefs don’t know this, their purchasing people might. But it’s up to us to remind the city/county board of these types of rules.

Yup. My city put them up despite massive public outcry. City council decided it was cheaper than fixing our crappy police department.

21

u/vandersnipe Jul 26 '26

My city council did the same thing

37

u/OrganizingBee Jul 26 '26

Public outcry itself isn't enough - it must be consistent, channeled strategically and ruthlessly, ideally disrupting lives of relevant/target decision makers.

It's still essentially asking nicely, hoping their minds change - only a small part that needs to be backed up with real disruption and force.

If we can get over this (conditioned belief that they will actively represent us), we'll win the transformative change that we deserve. We must make the path of least resistance relenting to demands - they ignore us because it's the less stressful option when public outcry and demands are not backed up enough.

So their lives need to be disrupted, pressured in various ways, by sizable numbers or key individuals/organizations. Always ask 'how does this change their day-to-day life,' that is also the best way to also evaluate our impact on community - material change we've won systemwide.

Sending communication to their office is one of the smallest forms of disruption, it does register, but calls and postcards or physical mail are best, requiring human interaction. Commenting on their social media is even less, though if consistent & popular enough, it does affect image.

Congressional offices kinda have to log these (from constituents) because they have legislative correspondents dedicated to the role, answering with the official stance. Lockheed Martin used to sell the software for this BTW, intranet quorum. It was like Windows XP UI, even in 2010s.

Disruption and pressure can happen in various arenas or dimensions.

Economic and financial - like a boycott, or even a pickett keeping people from entering a business. Disrupting the ability to make profit and sales.

Political - as in voting someone out of office. Or someone that previously endorsed that elected official is part of demanding the policy change or vote. Also a coalition, caucus or organization that is important to their ability to pass other legislation. Other legislators.

Legal and judicial - lawsuits, anything that relies on courts and laws, or utilizes them.

For rapid response against mass deportation, this includes activists recording video (&narrating) which is used in court.

Physical - what the guy in the video is showing. Or occupation - protest camps, tree-sitting, sit-ins/teach-ins, civil disobedience.

Notable occupation camps include - occupy Wall Street, student encampment for Gaza, Stop Cop City, Seattle Autonomous Zone, Resurrection City in civil rights movement, standing rocks prayer camps (which started in the reservation next to pipeline construction, and decided to set up camp across the river, just a few hundred feet away). Naomi Klein calls this Blockadia in This is an Uprising iirc, it's worldwide.

Social, like they lose friends, family, or acquaintances pressure them, or they're not allowed in restaurants.

Cultural - the memes, more generally shouted into the void until they become popular. The popularity is key though, and individual sharing a single meme isn't enough.

I'm sure there are other dimensions and lenses on these levels, and sub categories within them, or overlapping areas. IMO the phone call and postcards are also physical because someone has to physically answer/receive them. 10,000 of them is a hassle to deal with physically, it disrupts the ability of the office to work.

If they can simply wait out the outcry, they will - peoples energy does change and shift, we get distracted.

Escalation campaigns are how proper efforts approach changing minds of electeds - starting with simple friendly meetings and asks, moving towards public demands, and escalating in each action/event/protest, ramping up the pressure.

Generally, the core approach is to not start so harsh So they dig in their heels, ego causes opposition. But we can play good cop, bad cop, a radical Left flank is helpful - making the core coalition seem more reasonable. IIRC this was a part of Erica Chenoweth's research findings on violence in political resistance.

57

u/Props_angel Jul 26 '26

They're only a problem if he was doing something against the law and they were caught on a camera on the way to and from a crime scene. Since he's not doing that, there's no issue with him having any identifying tattoos.

I feel like we could use another tool and get quicker cut

975

u/GoodGoofus Jul 26 '26

As a law abiding Bathroom installer that cuts cast, steel and fiber tubs all day, trust, the recip is the best and most effective. Just instead of Pulling it towards you you should cut with force and let the blade make its own path. More jagged sure, but a hell of a lot faster for demo day!

373

u/WackyRevolver Jul 26 '26

Yep recip is the best choice, buddy just doesn't have great technique. Keep the saw guard against the object being cut so the blade movement can't move the whole saw back and forth and let the blade do the work.

But even if you don't have experience its a quick cut for a metal post, as demonstrated. Just dont give up til it falls! Assuming you're cutting your own property that is..

145

u/MadeByTango Jul 26 '26

Look he's a journalist, clearly his first time.

51

u/GoodGoofus Jul 26 '26

Hence why a kindly professional opinion can aid in all your home repair needs!

→ More replies (1)

63

u/SocietyAsAHole Jul 26 '26

It's not really his technique, it's that the demo pole he's cutting is just loosely stuck in the ground so it can oscillate back and forth with the blade, which slows everything down and makes it much louder. It's like trying to saw a board you're holding on your hand vs in a vise.

If he was cutting a properly secured pole it would be much faster and easier.

→ More replies (8)

34

u/GoodGoofus Jul 26 '26

I would say! The straight across cut is actually also making it harder due to the 2 pieces binding together around the blade, a diagonal cut would surely be fastest!

As an HVAC installer who often runs gas line, I would beg to differ. Handheld dewalt band saw. Quicker, quieter, cleaner.

(Edit) I also don’t break laws

26

u/GoodGoofus Jul 26 '26

I hear you but as you know professionally, bandsaws are a bit more expensive and the blades have a higher chance to snap if you're inexperienced in home repair. Best of luck to all the DIY homeowners out there!

8

Also look for finer teeth blades that made either bimetal or full metal.you dont have to go big and buy carbide teeth blades (or nitro) but they may make for a faster cut and last a little bit longer.

You mean the criminals could...

170

u/Outside_Valuable_320 Jul 26 '26

🤣. I mean yes. The criminals...

40

u/SupermassiveCanary Jul 26 '26

It’s also easier cutting closer to the ground as there is less vibration, in theory

30

u/enw_digrif Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Eh, not too close, because the criminals will want to properly control the fall to avoid injury. A bit above waist height should be best.

They should angle it too. The criminals should probably start the cut on the side facing them, edge angled down, with the shoe (the bit on a hinge near the base of the saw) pressed against the pole. With their dominant hand on the fore guard controlling the cut and the non-dominant on the trigger, their shoulder should be against the pole, causing the pole to lean away from them, while offering some control over dierction of fall. That way, the cut won't bite the saw, allowing for a faster, more effective cut.

Even though they're committing the worst crime of all - property damage! - that's no excuse for shoddy or unsafe practices.

Edit: apparently, it needs saying that you don't need to make punji stick out of the pole. A slight (~15°) downward angle is more than enough to let gravity do some of the work, while minimizing cut length and avoiding creating dangers for people who play stilts hopscotch next to implement hazards.

17

u/HoldenMcNeil420 Jul 26 '26

The pole is moving and shaking because it’s not really set. So it’s absorbing a lot of the cutting force and not cutting.

When cutting soft materials like wood or aluminum it's best to use course tooth blades. Fine tooth blades get packed with the material and become less efficient.

His demonstration pole wasn't installed correctly. It was pretty loose in the ground making it harder to take down. The wobbling in loose ground makes it a lot harder to cut.

94

u/LazyLich Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Tbf, at least it's a reciprocating saw, so even if he hits himself he'd likely have no injury injuries not as bad as if they were slicing toward themselves with a knife or power saw.

Edit:

I was thinking of medical reciprocating saws.. but even for power tools, I'm ASSUMING it's less dangerous than doing the same movement with a blade or power saw.

As someone not seeing this in their country : whos approving these cameras? Who's paying for it? How did these things seemingly go from ive never heard about them to being ubiquitous and another American scourge?

426

u/Vampy-tk Jul 26 '26

The government approves it, taxes pay for it, they went unheard of for a long time because it wasn't exactly "announced" that Flock cameras track way more than what they said

173

u/Otterhendrix Jul 26 '26

Yeah I watched a video where a cop went to a woman’s home and told her exactly when she entered city limits, where she went, and when she left the city too. Down to the second. That shits ridiculous!

148

u/Electronic_Chard3992 Jul 26 '26

And the point of that video is that she wasn't even the correct woman he was looking for, with ALL that data at his disposal. Tbh that video is a great example of how large data collection turned over to simpletons who can't troubleshoot a smartphone is exceptionally more dangerous than even properly trained use of the collected data. Police states should not exist, and I'm so so glad that there seems to be a growing social contract to kill flock wherever it is being found.

31

u/Otterhendrix Jul 26 '26

Yep. They have all that data available to them and still fuck up. It should be a commercial for just how untrustworthy this flock shit is!

13

u/7fortyseven Jul 26 '26

so we should be catching more criminals right?

i was victim of property theft last month in a city ripe with flock cameras. i have hd footage of the entire thing, complete with faces and license plate number. despite my own footage and presumed flock footage, i have not been able to get any semblance of a pulse from the local pd. it wasn’t a little theft either, thousands above the felony threshold.

my guess is that the pd is still woefully understaffed. even with the new tools, they don’t have the team to investigate and sift through their new data unless it is a truly heinous crime.

17

u/citrusthievingharlot Jul 26 '26

Oh, it's not that they're understaffed. It's that you personally aren't providing them with funds or extra nice things, so they ignore you.

Police don't work for the people, they work for our political overlords, the 1%, and themselves.

If you're anyone else you might get your situation looked into if a cop is having a slow, boring day. Otherwise they just. Don't. Care.

It's a concerted effort between tech broligarchs. The Network State by Balaji Srinivasan. The first toe in the door is always safety. (Benjamin Franklin had some words on this topic: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.") It doesn't happen all at once, first they promise you a little more safety for a little less freedom. Several months later, they've got Meta's NameTag facial recognition code quietly deploying to every device with any meta apps on it. And then flock goes from collaborating with LEOs using their own proprietary traffic cams to subcontracting with Ring cam and many other wifi connected security cams, and you find out one day through an FOIA request that some of these creepy Flock guys (who are not themselves law enforcement) keep remotely accessing daycare and children's gymnastics facility security cameras to review footage from those in their personal time. It's for safety that they have to spy on our young children you see, and to keep us all even safer they have to use facial recognition software and information compiled by government agencies including our legal names and addresses and photos of our faces to track our every move all the time. And now Kylie Jenner is helping too by putting more of the NameTag facial recognition enabled cameras on people's faces, so now anyone with a pair of glasses on might also be part of the surveillance network.

It's like if a total stranger told you if you give them a copy of your house key you'll never get robbed.

This has all been an ongoing project for oh at least 25 years as far as I can recollect, probably longer. The powers that be are always trying to find faster better more effective ways to trick us into forfeiting more freedom for "safety." Heavy on the sarcasm here because as a woman and a mother the surveillance state we're rapidly transforming into does not make me feel safe at all.

When this topic came up with my sister, she asked me, "didn't all of these types of surveillance (traffic and dash cams, security cams, smartphones etc etc) already exist though? What makes this any different?"

And I'll tell you the difference between the world pre and post Flock: those cameras weren't all talking to each other while cross referencing your face against government collected data, and continually building a massive footprint of your personal movements and whereabouts 100% of the time that is stored by private parties on Jeff Bezos' servers without your direct explicit informed consent

For educational purposes only, a lot of these vandals are purchasing lasers apx 300-500mW and targeting cameras from such a far distance away that they cannot be seen. Unfortunately, all of them are aware that lasers of this strength do in fact pose a risk to human eyesight, and recognize that in order to protect their eyes they should match the wavelength of the laser they purchased (in nm), verify the Optical Density (OD of 4+), and are sure to verify that they glasses meet the standard safety ratings like ANSI Z136 or EN 207. To make matters worse, they have also begun purchasing mastercard/visa giftcards with cash in order to purchase all of these items, keeping their identity hidden.

19

u/sunshine-x Jul 26 '26

Having things delivered to the wrong address and porch-pirating them is also concerning, these criminals are evading capture by keeping their own addresses anonymous. Watch your porch for unexpected packages intended for a sneaky flock chopper.

25

u/Public_Umpire_1099 Jul 26 '26

I've even heard they've taken to getting packages delivered to new construction homes that are still on the market to avoid delivering them to peoples actual houses! The ingenuity is diabolical.

ATTENTION! : Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you shine those BRIGHT GREEN LASER POINTERS that are SUPER CHEAP ON AMAZON at FLOCK CAMERAS because this will DAMAGE THE INTERNAL SENSORS and render them BASICALLY USELESS. These cameras are EXPENSIVE and serve an IMPORTANT PURPOSE in PUBLIC SURVEILLANCE so DAMAGING THEM will prevent PRIVATE SURVEILLANCE COMPANIES from ̶S̶P̶Y̶I̶N̶G̶ ̶O̶N̶ ̶Y̶O̶U̶ KEEPING YOU SAFE.

What I find most interesting about Flock cameras is how chock full of copper wiring they are. I mean just oodles of copper wires. And RAM, tons of it.

9

u/RespectableBloke69 Jul 27 '26

The battery inside a Flock camera is worth $300! That can buy a lot of crack!

u/Fra5er Jul 26 '26

Accessing deflock is a paper trail…

348

u/Pristine-Prior-504 Jul 26 '26

I heard the smart criminals are using VPNs and other means that help protect their online browsing habits, but it’s only just a rumor.

32

u/clevermoniker Jul 26 '26

I heard that the really smart criminals are using cash bought burners that are only powered on and out of faraday bags when they are away from their homes and workplaces and in random places. Also just a rumor.

18

u/Darkside_Hero Jul 26 '26

These same criminals also remember to never use their burner phone in proximity to their personal phone.

Last I checked if you use windows it doesn't matter whether you used vpn or not.

99

u/WrestlingDadPA Jul 26 '26

Yes, but no real reason not to access deflock. I've never done any form of vandalism, but I still access deflock because I like to know where these cameras are. Any business with them in their parking lot, I can (at a very minimum) choose not to support that business.

Are criminals going to public libraries to use the internet?

Unrelated: everyone really needs to switch to Linux..

I heard some people go to their local libraries and get a temporary log in for the computers and browse that way. It doesn’t require identification they just give a code to log in for the 2 hrs

9

u/Llyon_ Jul 26 '26

Except there are cameras tracking everyone that goes to the library, so you need to wear that concealment outfit, which is pretty conspicuous. And don't bring your phone, or use your car. Also you need a library card, so you need to get a fake one.

Okay, maybe we do live in a surveillance state.

Why the bag over the saw?

196

u/gufhvbfb Jul 26 '26

Makes the saw unidentifiable by hiding the brand

72

u/Loud_Engineering796 Jul 26 '26

...and any specific cosmetic damage on the tool.

123

u/Coffee_Drinker02 Jul 26 '26

extra layer of security so pigs can't look to see if any store near by has just that brand or if cameras caught someone buy that brand saw and go straight to the camera.

→ More replies (14)

24

u/swedething Jul 26 '26

So it’ll stay unidentifiable as well.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/imuglybutyourefat Jul 26 '26

Because you’d probably identify people by the tool - if it looks used then you’d know they work in construction / etc. if it looks new then they’d look at local stores.

These hooligans better watch out for gait detection technology!

As long as they don't throw a pebble or two in their shoes, we should be safe from their heinous vandalism.

42

u/Saintly-Mendicant-69 Jul 26 '26

Walk without rhythm, it won't attract the worm

17

u/Larcye Jul 26 '26

I'd hate to be the prosecutor whose entire case rests on the accused Gait... Like I can think of a million ways to get that laughed out of court. Pebble in the shoe, spraining your ankle. walking with a limp for one day only! So many options.

12

u/steelong Jul 26 '26

I imagine they're more likely to use gait to identify a suspect, and then monitor the suspect until they gather enough other evidence that the gait is no longer necessary in court.

That's also how it's done when prosecution doesn't want to reveal whatever horribly invasive tech they have access to. Wild how they don't even feel the need to hide anymore.

15

u/Semyonov Jul 26 '26

Spy agencies hate this one neat trick!

19

u/This_Elk_1460 Jul 26 '26

Remember everyone if you see somebody messing with a flock camera no you fucking didn't

59

u/j89turn Jul 26 '26

Looks like ICE, these violent individuals must be paid and trained by the Gov too /s

26

u/malthar76 Jul 26 '26

Since ICE doesn’t show any badges and covers their face and tattoos as well, I, a law abiding citizen, would never report or obstruct such an individual from authorized removal of an Antifa hacked Flock camera.

18

u/ivanadie Jul 26 '26

Watched a guy explain than the poles are set in concrete illegally, too close to the road, and that people could be injured if they hit them during a wreck.

So where are the lawsuits? Can citizens not ban together and sue the flock companies for their removal?

Remember that movie “enemy of the state?” The thriller was all to outline how terrible it would be if those in power could track a persons location via high tech GPS.. we passed that red line a decade ago and Flock is as bad if not worse than the Chinese cameras or social public score the right railed against for years. This shit is truly un-American
