Society/Culture 1-5% of kids should be expelled every year.

6.2k Upvotes

Starting in jr high the bottom 1% should be expelled from the school system every year. They can be given work internships for labor jobs you learn by doing. And given a chance to reattend when they are ready. This should increase to 5% or more in high-school every year.

Degrees need to mean something again.

Making high-school degree mean something will also have a downstream effect on making college degrees mean something again.

now of course this system isn’t dropped into a vacuum, once people realize the stakes, the ”lazy but smart” people will be forced into improvements. It will be legal to employ 12 year old if they were expelled, at a living wage.

Society/Culture Nobody should be allowed to walk shirtless in public, even men.

4.2k Upvotes

I don't care what gender you are, how attractive you think you are, or what the current temperature is, put some fucking clothes on. In all my years living in one of the hottest, driest countries on earth, I have not once felt the need to leave home without a shirt on, and I'm convinced that anyone who does feel the need to do so is entirely unfit for life outside of a specialized nursery for the genetically stunted. Seriously, people have gotten way to comfortable outside their own home.

Society/Culture Teachers are paid fairly considering they get a lot of time off

4.1k Upvotes

A lot of people say (and it seems that the general consensus is that) teachers don't get paid enough for what they do. While I think that teachers are very valuable and deserve to be compensated well (my brother is a teacher), I think that in these discussions, many people ignore the fact that teachers typically get a lot of time off.

They usually get summer break, spring break, and winter break, plus various holidays that schools get off through the year. They basically don't work for a good amount of the year, which I think that people should factor in. (The downside is that I know that they have to work extra grading things outside of school, though.)

Plus they normally get good benefits for being a teacher (which usually comes with being in a union).

Society/Culture More Straight Guys Should Get on Grindr NSFW

2.8k Upvotes

I am a heterosexual Grindr user. Yes, I am a man. No, I am not closeted.

I used to be incredibly insecure because of my penis. It’s a little on the small side, it’s a little curvy, and it’s uncut. I was scared to have sex because I thought women would think it was weird and judge me.

Enter Grindr.

When I was 20, I got really drunk and decided to send pictures of my penis to random gay dudes on Grindr. I thought it would be funny to watch them react in horror at the sight of my weird penis. Much to my surprise, they loved it (well, some of them loved it, and others blocked me). They all told me that they loved how thick it was and how big my balls are. This gave me the confidence to finally lose my virginity to a woman. Now, whenever I feel insecure, I get on Grindr, find a horny dude, and send him a picture of my penis. This has singlehandedly given me a 1000% confidence boost.

If more straight dudes got on Grindr, there would be no male loneliness crisis. Horny dudes would no longer fear rejection because their most intimate parts will have been reviewed by gay men. The incels would finally get laid and would learn to respect women. Straight men on Grindr could fix gender relations fr

Society/Culture I don't care if vegans say I'm a bad person for eating meat because they're right

3.1k Upvotes

I've always respected vegans and what they stand for because I love animals and the more I learn about the meat industry the more I understand the literal torture the animals are put through.

I see a lot of people who don't like vegans because they "think they're superior and call people who eat meat bad people". I think they're fucking right. They are superior in this specific aspect, for the commitment they have made and what they stand for even though I know "humans need meat & dairy to be healthy" and whatever.

I don't mind being told I suck for contributing to the demand for this shitty industry because I am aware, I just don't have the motivation to make the same commitment vegans have made. I will continue to eat meat & dairy while also acknowledging I'm not the best person for it.

Society/Culture I can't stand when people adopt "authentic" pronunciations of non-English words when speaking English

1.7k Upvotes

It can happen for all non-English loan words, but it happens very often with names of places. For instance, Barcelona and Ibiza are often pronounced with a "th" sound, even though the traditional, accepted English pronunciation is a soft "c" in Barcelona and a "z" in Ibiza.

Some Americans will even adopt an English accent when talking about some English cities! For instance, I've heard Americans talk about visiting the city of "Bahth." There's no need to switch to a new accent to say the name "Bath," which should be pronounced just like the tub that you fill with water.

ETA: Sorry, "Ibiza" was a bad example because the "th" is standard in the UK, so it's the correct pronunciation to use when speaking in a British dialect. In America, the "z" is the standard sound we use. A "th" in "Ibiza" sounds pretentious when speaking in an American dialect.

Society/Culture People who don’t need to work shouldn’t be expected to get a job

1.7k Upvotes

I am 20 and I am in college. I got my first part time job when I was 18 and it was actual hell so I quit after 9 months and was unemployed for 2 years until last week. And my new job I already hate because it is ruining my social life.

My parents, (my dad in particular) have very successful careers, one works in finance and the other healthcare. My sister who is 7 years older than me followed my mother’s career path and she hates it and wishes she did something else but she said it’s too late because she has 2 kids now. And I have no interest in either industry and have no idea what career path I want to pursue.

I live with my parents rent free and I pay zero bills. They fund my entire life and they have done up until this point. They have spent over 1m on private school tuition for me and my sister from JK to Grade 12, taken us on a ton of vacations, and have really given us a privileged upbringing.

Realistically they could fund my life forever and I could go without working, but them and everyone else expects me to have a job and I was basically shamed for being unemployed by other people. I didn’t choose to be born so why is it wrong for me to me to want to do nothing in life. My parents have the means to make it happen but I’m viewed as a leech for wanting to live off them. People who don’t need work as a necessity shouldn’t be expected to, I don’t see why I have to

Society/Culture Periods should be a valid excuse to skip school

3.7k Upvotes

If we can skip school when we’re sick why isn’t being on our period a valid excuse???

“Oh but then every girl would be doing the same thing” “you’ll be skipping school every month”

Valid arguments, I concur!

However I’m just thinking for myself right now and if I wasn’t bleeding a waterfall every month, I would gladly attend school

But unfortunately I am in pain for a while every month. And while I am in pain, I can’t pay attention to lectures or anything, I’m just wishing I was clean and in my bed!!!!! Why can’t I go home? I’m just wasting my time! My painkillers don’t even take instant effect…..

“Oh but just take some panadol or painkillers or something”

The pain isn’t the only inconvenience, I hate how my leg movements become so restricted. I bleed so much I need to use large pads so this restricts my movements severely

So much inconveniences!!!! How can woman do this?! Don’t tell me to suck it up I don’t want to suck it up

I also feel bloated and tired and I don’t want to move also I dislike changing pads in public toilets so……

Having our period should be a valid excuse to skip school, I mean I’m basically sick, I can’t believe I tolerated this bullshit for 6 years and I have another 30 years of bleeding a massacre to take

Sincerely, Someone who doesn’t even have any period related health conditions, I wish I can remove my uterus permanently (I don’t understand how all my other friends are tolerating this shit better than me)

Edit: I DO NOT HAVE ANY PERIOD RELATED HEALTH CONDITIONS

Society/Culture you can sleep with someone of the same sex enjoy it and still be straight NSFW

1.9k Upvotes

it’s just bodies i mean if you can use just physical stimulation to get yourself hard why wouldn’t you be able to in front of a person with the same sex as you? same thing with like being bottom there’s no difference between getting pegged by a woman and getting dick from a guy they both stimulate your prostate. there are aspects that are good in the both male and female forms like i’m sleeping with a guy who has a body that looks like this and a face that is almost a looksmatch with prime tom welling. i feel like it’s impossible not to be attracted to aspects of the male sex because of how objective it is when someone is attractive and with an attractive face and some friction you can easily get hard, without actually being attracted to like the genitals they have. i think a lot of looksmaxxers problems could be solved if they had this philosophy. gay gays only looking for hookups, even very good looking ones, are incredibly easy to bag and if you want to sleep with someone you’ll get like 10 options within the hour using grindr. i think society needs to stop using these labels and define homosexuality as an act rather than an identity.

Society/Culture Cheaters deserve some grace.

1.3k Upvotes

Don't get me wrong . Cheating is definitely wrong and morally despicable. But if there's one thing I understand after working in professions where infidelity is regular ( fitness, club promotion, gigs) is that lust is a significant factor ,when it comes to transgression and monogamy isn't natural for many humans .

One thing that doesn't deserve grace though , is when the cheating partner doesn't come clean to the cheated partner immediately. Because that's just another level of manipulation and gaslighting.

So the act of cheating deserves some grace, but the cheating partner needs to come clean to cheated partner about their act and then they have the power as to what to do about the future of their relationship.

Edit: This is just an opinion. i've never cheated in the past .

Society/Culture "Lowkenuinely" is linguistically and etymologically beautiful

3.6k Upvotes

I'm a big fan of the evolution of language. When sick and bad and gnarly mean good. When hot and cool mean similar things. When served, cooked, and ate are accomplishments.

I think that the combination of the words "lowkey" and "genuinely" convey a specific flavor of mellow earnestness that no word has previously been able to achieve on its own. The reason why it's spread so fast is because it's funny but also it's useful. It slots right into a feeling we've already been feeling, which is a beautiful evolution of language.

Society/Culture The decline in drinking and casual sex is the real reason for the “loneliness epidemic”. NSFW

1.6k Upvotes

Alcohol has been a social lubricant ever since humans have been alive. Casual sex is also a byproduct of drinking. Many many relationships start from hooking up and drinking. The decline in drinking and hooking up goes hand in hand with people being lonelier. All this BS about men and women being lonely and the gender wars would go away if Gen-Z just did what millennials and gen-X did before them.

Society/Culture I prefer squat toilets over sit-down toilets, and will always choose them when given the choice

Post image
1.9k Upvotes

Interestingly, I did not grow up using them, as the country I grew up in only has sit-down toilets. But upon moving back to my birth country I realised that I far prefer squat toilets over sit-down toilets.

  1. While how clean or smelly they are depends on the establishment itself, they are far easier to clean, you can just hose them down easily. And you don't have to worry about any piss splatter (I am a male).

  2. They are quicker to use. The reason is described #3.

  3. This is the natural position for humans to use, so it is quicker to go big, and actually a lot better for health.

I think those are all of the reasons. In countries such as South Korea and Malaysia, where you often have the option of both, I will always go for the squat toilet.

Society/Culture Carrying a water bottle everywhere is unnecessary

Is it just me, or am I somehow way less thirsty than everyone else?

Like fr, unless you’re going on a 2h+ hike, can’t you just like… survive? Or drink from a fountain? If I’m going on errands I’ll just have a glass of water before leaving, or when I come back. No??? Am I crazy???? Why do I need to bring water bottles for the kids when I go to the park for only 30 mins?!?!?!

Society/Culture You probably don’t need a bidet

2.2k Upvotes

It seems like a lot of people on Reddit are getting paid off by Big Bidet to make everyone else think that toilet paper is unhygienic. For people with bowel or mobility issues I’m sure they’re very helpful, and I know washing with water is the norm in many cultures, but if you’re a healthy person with a normal diet, a bidet probably isn’t necessary.

“With a bidet, you won’t be wiping until you bleed and spending a fortune on toilet paper!”

You shouldn’t be doing that anyway. It’s not normal. Either you’ve got a medical condition or you’re eating too much fat and not enough fibre. I’ve got a normal diet and half the time there isn’t even anything on the paper when I wipe. Consider eating a vegetable and not deep frying it.

“But if you got poop on your hand, you wouldn’t just wipe it off with paper!”

No I wouldn’t, because I use my hands for things. They’re out in the open air all of the time, and *nobody* would expect them to be covered in poop residue. But I’m not eating or shaking people’s hands with my anus. It’s separated from the rest of the world by at least two layers of fabric. Everybody knows that that’s where poop comes out, and nobody is touching it.

And also, if I got poop on my hands, I wouldn’t just squirt water at them either. I’d scrub them vigorously with soap. Obviously nobody is advocating for anal soaping because it’s not a part of your body that’s used for anything other than pooping.

“But it’s just so unhygienic to only use paper!”

But I’m not only using paper. Like all normal human beings, I shower and change my underwear every day. Nobody with normal hygiene practices needs to worry about getting a filthy, crusty anus.

Seriously, what is going on? I totally get it if you have something like Crohn’s disease where you need to do an above average amount of wiping, or some kind of physical disability where the arms are too short or weak to wipe properly, but if you’re *completely healthy*? Is a task that takes a few seconds to a minute at most really so trying that you need a special machine to do it for you?

Society/Culture 6-7 is one of the best memes currently trending

4.6k Upvotes

It’s literally just numbers. That’s it. No hidden innuendos or inappropriate meaning. I love that kids get hype about it. As a teacher, I am constantly monitoring kids to make sure they are being respectful in their language and behavior. It’s genuinely relieving that six/seven is such a popular joke with no downsides and all the people complaining seriously are so oblivious. Like, are all the people who want to “ban” six seven think that kis won’t just make a new joke??

I am personally so glad we are moving past the days of “devious licks” and eating tide pods. Now, all I have to do is incorporate a six-seven jokes and my kids are a little more engaged with the lesson. It’s funny how it means nothing and even if you don’t agree, you have to admit that 6-7 is significantly less harmful than the previous and current brainrot trends going around.

Society/Culture most of the incel communities are closer to understanding feminism than they realize

2.0k Upvotes

they do have horrific viewpoints about women and men that they deem more attractive than then however occasionally they seem to comprehend the gap between men and women

i’ve spent a while in incel communities out of curiosity and they do seem to be able to pretty consistently understand the tensions between men and women when it comes to dating and being in the workforce however they come to the completely wrong conclusions

rather than seeing the patriarchy as something that dictates how men are supposed to act, how society works and why feminists fight it they seem to think that it’s a tool specifically designed to prevent them from dating

they recognize that the patriarchy hurts them, extremist views hurt almost everyone and that the ruling class is against the but that blame women for that rather than the people in power who actually have the control

they’re able to relatively precisely identify the flaws in the system but they blame women rather than the people who are actually responsible

Society/Culture Cousin Relationships Shouldn’t Be Considered Taboo

4.7k Upvotes

For most of human history, cousin marriage wasn't just accepted—it was preferred. Royal families? Did it. Nobel Prize winners? Did it. Charles Darwin? Married his cousin. Einstein? Married his cousin. You like your fancy European history? Guess what- half of those kings and queens were basically recycling the same five surnames.

But now, in our so-called "progressive" society, you date your cousin one time and suddenly you're a social pariah. Make it make sense. Let's Address the Elephant in the Family Reunion:

“BuT tHE geNetiCs!" First of all, calm down, Gregor Mendel. The risk of birth defects from cousin marriages is literally only slightly higher than in the general population. It's around 4-6% (compared to 3-4% for random couples). That's barely a difference! You know what does cause way more genetic issues? People having kids at 40 years old. And yet, where's the outrage over that?

"It's gRosS!" Oh, so love is love-except when my soulmate happens to share some of my DNA? Try again. If two consenting adults want to build a life together, why does it bother you? If we're gonna be out here supporting all relationships, let's be consistent.

“But it's illegal in some places!" So is marijuana, dancing, and owning a goldfish in some parts of the world. Doesn't mean those bans make sense. Half the U.S. allows cousin marriage.Meanwhile, in some places, you can marry your step-sibling, and no one bats an eye.

“It's only done in weird cultures." Hate to break it to you, but your ancestors did it. A lot. If anything, not marrying your cousin is a recent experiment.

If it was good enough for royalty, good enough for scientists, and good enough for most of human history, why is it suddenly bad now? If two consenting adults fall in love and aren't hurting anyone, why should you care? Society just randomly decided this was taboo, and I, for one, think it's time we undo the damage.

That's my unpopular opinion. Discuss. And if your first reaction was "ew" instead of a logical argument, congrats-you've been brainwashed by Big Society.

Society/Culture Hanging out in your front yard is inconsiderate.

1.1k Upvotes

Disclaimer: this is an irrational and nuanced opinion born from being an introvert and I support your right to hangout wherever you like on your property. Also, to be extra clear, I dont have issues with being social in general day to day life or going out in public. I have a job and go out in public just like everyone else and most people would probably not have a clue that I'm an introvert.

Assuming you live in a normal neighborhood, house fairly close to the street, with other neighbors fairly close to the sides and across. And especially assuming your house isn't really designed for front yard/front porch hanging out, and also assuming you have a backyard you could be hanging out in, I think you're an inconsiderate neighbor if you make a habit of hanging out in your front yard.

Unfortunately I have neighbors like this, and they stress me out. I feel like I can't step outside my front door without some expectation of being social and engaging with them. I feel like I can't perform tasks like yardwork without having an audience. It's invasive. I often feel it's a better option to just wait on my neighbors to just go in, before I go out and mow the lawn or take the trash to the curb. As an introvert this is just annoying. I think as a neighbor, you should have some self awareness that people just DONT always want to be social or feel like they're being watched. Not to mention, its hotter than Satan's asshole, wtf are you even doing in your driveway? Go find some shade at the very least.. looks like you have some nice shade trees and a shaded little sitting area in your backyard.

To be clear, these particular neighbors, in my case, are good neighbors. They're friendly enough, They keep their house and yard in amazing shape. And I'm friendly in return and would never make them feel like I dont like them. But I'm secretly incredibly annoyed by them.

Society/Culture Couples should be banned from mainstream social media

1.4k Upvotes

Couples on social media are a scourge to our society. I genuinely believe that single people and people in relationships approach social media totally differently and so couples should be relegated to their own special couples social media. None of us want to see that shit.

Maybe you can say I'm just salty that I'm single, but when I'm in a relationship I don't want to see that crap either. It's so performative and they should just fuck off.

Society/Culture The worm girlfriend question is logical.

4.0k Upvotes

When a girl asks, "Would you love me if I was a worm?" it's not random. It's a vehicle for more serious concerns. What she's actually asking is, "Will you love me when I'm not like this? When I'm old and gross? When I'm not sexually available? When I need help and I can't reciprocate? When your friends judge you? When our goals and dreams derail? When I can't give you what I'm giving you now?" A worm ticks all of those boxes.

Why ask it that way?

Fear of dishonesty. The idea that guys are primed to say, "of course," whether it's true or not. That the way to get the truth is to ask in a roundabout way. A guy who might lie about whether or not he'd stay if she got cancer could be shaken out of autopilot and answer honestly.

And the aversion men can have to discussing serious things. Some guys shut down completely. Some guys get mad. Some guys blow it off. If it's not happening rn, they don't necessarily understand why it's worth thinking about. So if she needs reassurance, she may know or believe it's not gonna happen that way.

It's not the best way to go about it, obv. The best way is usually to lead with what the problem is (need for honest reassurance) and ask outright. So it's ineffective when compared to more direct communication.

Does that mean it's illogical? No. There's reason behind asking it in that way. The progression from problem to solution is logical. It's just also not the best solution.

Edit: This has been a blast, but I'm I'm def not keeping up with all of these comments. The mix of, "wait, do ppl not already know this?" ... to ppl taking it literally, or not following it intentionally ... to ppl who think that it's a trap to be asked a question if the answer will upset their partner... there has been a lot of diversity. I've had fun replying to some of you, and I promise to re-post it when it evolves to another metaphor. (✿‿)

Society/Culture Saying "a quarter till" instead of the actual time is inconvenient for both of us

1.3k Upvotes

I never thought this was an unpopular opinion until I got downvoted for saying it, I thought this was kind of obvious and it was just an unfortunate habit leftover from analog clocks. To clarify, I'm complaining about when people do this with digital clocks, it's more reasonable with analog.

The thought process difference:

Clock says 2:47 --> round to 2:45 --> 60÷4=15 --> 45+15=60 --> 2:45 is a quarter of an hour away from 3:00 --> "It's a quarter till three."

Heard a "quarter till three" --> 60÷4=15 --> 60-15=45 --> 2:45 is a quarter of an hour away from 3:00 --> so it's probably 2:46 right now

Vs

Clock says 2:47 --> "It's two fourty seven."

Heard "two fourty seven" --> it's 2:47

EDIT:

A lot of people seem confused by my reasoning here so I'll explain a bit more. I am bothered by the choice to make additional mental steps just to give a less precise answer, it seems like a confusing waste of effort to me.

I specified digital clocks because they give you the time already exact, so you can read it out as written with zero processing needed. With analog clocks, getting the exact number takes much closer inspection, reading out what you see directly likely is something like "a quarter till" so that's perfectly reasonable. No, I do not think analog clocks show a different time or something. And yes, I can read them, digital is just what is natural to me. I think of time in "HH:MM" not in quarters.

So my complaint was about people making the choice to translate those exact numbers into an estimation, which I just translate back anyways. What I didn't realize at the time of making this, was how many people understand "a quarter till" or "half past" or whatever, as the time already. No mental rewriting needed. That makes it make a lot more sense to me, I get now that to a lot of people "2:47" and "a quarter to three" are synonyms. To me they are not, and I was projecting.

Society/Culture I Hate Calling Black Cats "Voids"

4.4k Upvotes

This nickname for the colour is basically inescapable on any black cat themed subreddit and I don't know why but it indescribably pisses me off.

It's just such an unnatural, forced sounding term that doesn't roll off the tongue well and sounds like it's trying too hard to be cool or exciting. It also totally gives me the same vibes as the whole "hecking wholesome pupperino" kind of talk from a few years back gives people now, it's so painfully reddit-tier cringe that I'd be super embarrassed for someone if they ever said it in real life.

Society/Culture There's no such thing as 'an acquired taste' it's just a fancy way of describing something that tastes bad but you learn to tolerate it eventually.

1.1k Upvotes

It's exclusively used to describe fancy food by people who are trying to seem sophisticated by eating it. You don't need to eat a food multiple times to figure out that it tastes good, good food is good straight away. If it takes time that just means it's shit but they can't admit that to themselves.
