Career/Education Anyone Else Dislike BD?

I have nearly 18 years of Structural Engineering experience at this point. I enjoy the project work, my team, and the firm I work for for the most part. Except over the past few years, the expectations for business development continue to increase. I can be killing all my goals - except BD, but my superiors only want to focus on BD goals. I can make a couple calls per week, but, honestly, I don't know that I want to spend 15% + of my time doing BD. I am tempted to either take a step down to avoid the increasing BD pressure or look elsewhere. What are others doing related to BD?

Steel Design Need help with codes

Hi,
I'm currently working on my PhD thesis in civil engineering on composite bridges. As a next step, I'd like to compare the design codes of different countries, specifically the requirements for minimum reinforcement and the reinforcement needed for crack width control.
Unfortunately, I don't have direct access to these codes through our university library.
I would really appreciate it if you could send me the relevant code(s) for composite bridges used in your country, or point me to where I could access them.
Best regards,

Structural Analysis/Design Conduit Installation on Existing Bridge

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello, I have been discussing with my coworkers how to install fiber conduits on an existing bridge. Our client has stated that parapet-mounted conduits are not allowed. We have approach slabs on both sides of the bridge.

We came across an example where the conduit was installed at a 45-degree angle and routed toward the median, which is similar to the situation on our project. Does anyone know what construction method or tools may have been used to install this 45-degree angled conduit? Any information or experience with similar installations would be appreciated.

Career/Education Dip in Quantity Surveyor OR Project Manager

Hi Team,

Looking to get some advise on which one should I choose.

I am 42 years old, based in Invercargill and have a background in operations, sales, business analysis, and bookkeeping. Although I hold a Master's degree in Accounting from Australia, I am not interested in pursuing a traditional full-time accounting role or becoming a CPA/CA. Some contacts have suggested becoming a Quantity Surveyor, but I am also considering broader construction management roles. While I understand the basic differences, I lack in-depth knowledge of the day-to-day realities. Given my background, which role would be a better fit? Additionally, which path offers better future job opportunities and higher earning potential?

Structural Analysis/Design Nuts off mark?

Post image
137 Upvotes

Saw this on a big bridge today. I know vibrations over time can move the nuts and bolts, with the help of thermal expansion. Is it a big issue that the paint marks do not line up? I thought the marks were made once it passed inspection after torquing.

Edit: Bridge completion was in 2011. Could this be from recent inspections too?

Structural Analysis/Design Etabs/Safe/Sap2000 - plugin for Claude?

Does anybody know any plugin to connect CSI Etabs to Claude and asks questions about the model? Same question for Safe and Sap2000?
I think we really need to start using AI some way.

Career/Education Work Life Balance in AECOM UK?

I'm a structural engineer in UK for the last 5 years. I'm currently working in a mid level consultancy. I have a good work life here. Now I'm being considered for a senior position at AECOM. Anyone working or working in AECOM what's your opinion of work life in AECOM? As this is a large size organisation I'm panicking now if I am making the right decision or not. The move I'm making is because I thought it wouldn't be good to stick to a single firm for more than 5 years and they are offering a senior position and also a better salary.

I am doing a project on shear wall vs bracing structure but while doing design check my bottom storey columns are failing due to is code it says some problems with axial load first i tried a 650mmx500mm then 750x650 mm by keeping beam of 500x450
and this problem only shows on braced buildings and bare frames it is fine in shear walls
I am tired of trying different combos of column
I am using M30 grade concrete for all buildings
and bracing of ismb 350
G+12 building

Career/Education PE Civil Structural Exam

I am thinking about taking one the online courses to prepare for the PE Civil Structural Exam. Not sure which one but maybe SoPE or AEI. Do any of the courses provide the code books to reference? I have a hard copy of the Steel manual and pdf versions of the IBC, ACI, and ASCE 7 manuals but don’t have any of the others.

Structural Analysis/Design "Error in performing miRunAnalysis" after adding several Load Patterns to one Load Case

Hey, has anyone seen this error? (screenshot attached)

The model was running fine, then I added a few Load Patterns to the same Load Case and now I get "Error in performing miRunAnalysis" when I try to run it.

Not sure what's causing it. Any ideas or a fix without rebuilding the whole case?

Using ETABS 23.

Thanks!
